A lot of those cats were plenty smart and could have easily made way more easily and faster working in finance or anything else. It was more like, 'Hey! I love playing games and if I can make them and get people to pay me, sweet!' That's why I said "companies", Cutter. In the beginning of any industry, you have tinkerers and hobbyists that are in to it solely for the sake of their own interest. For example, when Shockley, Bardeen and Brattain invented the transistor, I'd say it is reasonable to think it was one of those "what happens when I do this" moments. However, that didn't stop it from becoming the basis of the world changing juggernaut that digital technology is today.

venomhed wrote on Feb 10, 2012, 11:04: ...and since when did dungeons have doors?)...
For a pretty long fucking time, actually. Dungeon Master immediately springs to mind. As does The Bard's Tale. Even Rogue and Moria had doors in their dungeons. The Ultima series had doors in its dungeons as did the Eye of the Beholder series and forward. Where have you been?
The story in Skyrim was leaps and bounds better than Oblivion. The whole story of Oblivion is you doing nothing more than shepherding a whiny bitch around the countryside while actually doing his job for him (closing the Oblivion portals). That's it. Oh, then you get to stand around and watch him become a golden dragon statue. Woo. Thanks for the awesome end game for my thousand plus hour investment. In fact, it wasn't until The Shivering Isles DLC that you got a storyline that centered wholly around your own character.
Everyone knew going in that Skyrim was the last gasp of the Gamebryo/Emotion engine. Bethesda was very clear in interviews that they had just re-written portions of the code to add routines that fit with their vision of Skyrim. After Skyrim, we could expect future ES games to be built atop an entirely different engine.
Every company is in it for the profit. That's why they're in business. Anyone who thinks that games, past or present, were created be saintly martyrs for the purity of art are, quite frankly, hilariously delusional. |

Market researcher NPD Group says the dearth of new games likely resulted in fewer people going to stores and buying other recent releases on impulse. Activision Blizzard's CEO Bobby Kotick had this to say: "It's all the goddamn fault of those filthy pirates! It's the only reason sales ever dip in our glorious master race inspired accounting system. Why, if we were able to crush the used game market and allowed to murder anyone who's ever downloaded a copy of Huck Finn, we'd be making eleventy hojillion dollars a second. |

It took me 30 minutes to download the whole thing. I was pulling 3.5 MB/S with my home connection. Here at work, I am pulling 1.8 MB/s and it's taking me roughly 48 minutes. |

How long did that Red Faction TV show on SyFy last?
I remember making it through the first episode and being struck by how cheesy the acting was and how hackneyed the writing was. |

Bioware came too late in the RPG genre for me to find them "OMGWOWWTFBBQ". yeah, except for the entirety of D&D-based games, with the exception of the Gold Boxes, they sure did come too late.
^m^ For me, as I said, they were too late to the game. I no longer had the time to sink hours upon hours in to them as I had with Dungeon Master, The Bard's Tale and, the last RPG I dumped a ridiculous amount of hours in to, Ultima VII.
I guess if you were a tween or in your early teens, they were the in the right time frame for you. |

I don't really care about id as they haven't been relevant to me since Doom 2 and Bioware came too late in the RPG genre for me to find them "OMGWOWWTFBBQ".
However, Bethesda has been around for a very long time and, if anything, I think they're better and stronger today than they ever were. Skyrim is, by far, the greatest game they've ever released.
Did any of you ever play The Terminator, Terminator 2029, Delta V or any of their games that weren't TES based? They were either horrible or bitch-and-a-half's to even get working in the first place. Being purchased by Zenimax and being held accountable for making good games has given Bethesda the direction they needed to harness what is obviously a large pool of very real talent. |

I know if someone said that shit where I'm working at I'd have their ass fired. Call me cruel or whatever but what they are saying is the same thing as someone saying "Oh well that city is full of hard criminals and has a huge crime rate" simply because there's Africans living there. Actually, I think they're saying what they're saying because the data shows that's where a large majority of gold-farming and account thefts originate in.
It's like saying that I'm racist toward black people because I don't want to start a business in Detroit due to its rampant urban decay and sky high crime rate. How the Hell does that makes sense? In short, it doesn't.
Of course it's discriminatory and it's discriminatory in, what they consider, the best interests of their property and their paying customers. That's legal and generally good business sense. Protect and reward your paying customers and do your best to prevent disruptive and damaging behavior by third parties. |

If only for the simple fact that, in the regions listed, you have people of Caucasian, Arab, Asian, Polynesian and African descent.
So which of those five races are they being racist toward? |

Mr. Tact wrote on Jan 29, 2012, 20:35: Assuming you have all the tools, materials, and experience to do either of those. Personally, I'm 0 for 3 on that list. Tools and Materials: Home Depot, Lowes, Hardware store of your choice.
Experience: Everyone starts with zero. However, PVC is by far the easiest pipe type to cut and fit. There's also Google and most people have either a tablet, laptop, smartphone or printer handy.
Only thing stopping you from performing such an easy job: You.
When we bought our first home, I knew how to do yardwork, install a toilet from the flange up and some basic electrical work. That's about it. In that house, I learned how to do so much more because, quite frankly, we were poor and couldn't afford a service company to come out and fix all our problems. There are some situations worth calling an electrician for, such as installing 50 amp service, and those that are not, such as hanging a fan in a room where the overhead box wasn't designed for a fan.
Believe it or not, above foundation plumbing is some of the easiest work you can do yourself. Just takes a bit of flexibility, patience, problem solving and courage to tackle the unknown.

Hacksaw, shut-off valve and the Oatey cleaner and primer/glue kit. |

I tried it out for a bit and wasn't very impressed. It was like this weird hybrid between a Choose Your Own Adventure book in the RPG segment, the Disciples games in map movement and Total War in terms of combat. It isn't quite successful as, to me, they didn't flow from one mechanic to the next very smoothly.
However, if you haven't played their RTS mechanics previously, they so generously point you to YouTube links.
Sorry, lazy developer, if you could make a tutorial for your map movement then you could have made a tutorial for the battle segment as well.
I won't be purchasing it and I can't recommend it either. |
