23. Re: A bit of concern Apr 24, 2007, 16:01 Dan =0)

Heh... well, I had always been of the mind that "too hot" was over 120 or so. This thinking started in consideration of my old desktop PC during one summer while I was living in Southborough... that was a 2.4GHz P4 that hit 120F on a rather hot day with all windows shut in my "mother's-in-law" apartment. A "good" day would be less than 100F...

Still, it'll be interesting to get a comparison of three completely disparate systems (not terribly scientific, I know ).

1. iBook 1.33GHz G4 w/ 32MB ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 3D, 768MB PC2700 RAM, 60GB HDD, CD-RW (Combo Drive), Airport Wireless (wireless-g) card running Mac OS X 10.4.9.

2. Power Mac ("Mirrored-Drive Doors") dual 1.25GHz G4
with ATI Radeon (unsure of model #) 128MB card, 1.5GB
PC2100 memory, one 80GB IBM Deathstar IDE hard disk, one 160GB Seagate IDE hard disk, Combo Drive, sharing mouse, keyboard, monitor and a Buffalo Airstation (used as an accesspoint) with...

3. Custom PC - AMD Athlon XP 64 3000+ (1.8GHz) with ATI x700-based XTASY PCI-Express vid card sitting on BFG NForce4 mobo, 1.5GB DDR400 mem, Seagate 160GB SATA hard disk and Memorex DVD-RW.

I should be on later tonight for anyone who wants to hop into GW, BF or anything of the sort... hell, even Worms: Armageddon!

19. A bit of concern Apr 24, 2007, 15:42 Dan =0)

I've been noticing my iBook G4 (14" 1.33GHz late 2004 model) running seemingly a bit hot to the touch today. On top it's toasty. On the bottom (underside) seems almost hot enough to burn.

Fan speed: 0rpm (?????) Note: I do not hear a fan running. 1. It's way quiet, 2. I've gone deaf, or 3. it's just plain not working.

Current temps (according to Hardware Monitor):

Battery: 93F/34C
Graphics Proc: 129.7F/54.2C
Power Supply/Mem. Bottomside: 124.7F/51.5C
Proc Bottomside: 129.7F/54.2C
SMART Disk Fujitsu MHT2060AT: 118.4F/48.0C

Not hot enough to boil water. Still, I'm very concerned with temps reaching nearly 130F on some bits...

I should run Hardware Monitor (3rd party app) on my desktop dual G4 and see what the temperature craziness is like in comparison...

Likewise, I'll probably throw a temp monitor on my Windows XP box for kicks... anyone have any suggestions for a decent freeware 3rd party temp-monitoring app?

Thanks,

Dan =0)

Research opens way for bionic eye.

I thought I'd seen, a year or two ago(!) on the program "Scientific American Frontiers" with Hawkeye... er, Alan Alda, a facility in Portugal already experimenting on blind people?

Granted, the apparatus used was very primitive-looking, and seemed rather cumbersome, but the subject/patient could make out vague shapes and shadows.

Man Denied Smokes Allegedly Rams House.

Talk about nicotine withdrawal.

Your lack of knowledge of the game suggests you should keep your lame virgin nose out of the discussion then, you sorry freak. BTW I hate your posts. Grow a spine and stop posting about how sad you are here. OR AT LEAST MAKE IT FUNNY.

Okay, fine, I open mouth and insert foot.. my bad.

*rant*
I don't know what the heck the nature/plot of this game is, how to play it, or even if the story is true or just some elaborate(?) belated April Fools' joke foisted upon the 'net, but I didn't come here at 5:30 in the morning to expect this level of vulgarity on Blue's community messageboard from you guys when my purpose is merely to find out what others thought about this story.

I've dealt with enough stupidity tonight in the real world, as it is.
*/rant*

Anywho....

For the record, I've played games for well over two decades (can't believe I'm saying that now) on various platforms - TI/99A, Apple IIgs, Apple Mac Classic II, Commodore 64, Atari 2600, NES, SNES, TG16, x86-compatible PCs, and so on... and I still suck much at playing multiplayer.

EDIT: My apologies, Blue... just needed to say it.

(Yes, I'm still up. Can't sleep )

Trying to use the more business (see the link Dan posted) to justify the ban, as far as I am concerned, has absolutely no relevance to the specific topic of allowing/disallowing.

I figured there might at least be some sort of a correlation(sp?)? I gathered that simply decreasing smoking would not necessarily directly increase the number of customers, as other factors are involved. But I didn't think that smoking, or lack thereof, could/would/should be a factor among several.

Yeah, that's why I find it comical when people cite unions as some great evil verus exuctive thievery.

On a different political matter...

A friend of mine and I were chatting on the phone earlier, when he mentioned about the book "Thank You For Not Smoking", upon which the movie is based, stating that the author is the best he'd ever read concerning use of satire of a socio-political arena (not his words, but my own).

His stance is that of getting the state (in this case MA) to allow all bars to restore a smoking environment within their premisis, if the bars so choose.

Previously, in an attempt to get the ball rolling, the state mandated that bars comply with a regulation requiring appropriate ventilation systems to exhaust the smoke from establishments, which may have cost upwards of $5,000. Soon afterward (a year, I guess?), the state then declared compliance with outright banning of smoking in those "public" establishments, with some weird reg saying that 90% of all sales must come from tobacco sales to meet a rule allowing indoor smoking (I may have misheard this - someone feel free to correct me). This is what I gathered from his end. To which, I asked, where in any law does it say that an establishment must be protected from bankruptcy or failure otherwise? (He even mentioned during the convo that the main character/tobacco-corp person presented in the aforementioned novel/movie was a "good guy". As in, "not a bad guy", not a "hero".)

For those out-of-staters, smoking in these establishments - restaurants, bars, etc. - had been banned, for example, in Boston in 2003. Other towns and cities may have enacted bans in other months/years around then.

Personally, I don't smoke. I've seen what can happen to those that do (certain family members), and the surrounding physical effects that linger are not pleasant. I would never wish to start due to an already-present lung condition. Of course, this would end up only as anecdotal.

That being said, I'm a bit conflicted. On one hand, I don't think I have a right to tell others how they should live their lives; on the other hand, I think public health at large trumps any individual concern, especially (oddly?) with respect to things that can be smoked - since the smoke can travel well and PERMEATES when it settles in...

.....e.g. my current vehicle - my mother's previous car. Yuck. Had to air the windows out through the windows for over a week - and this was with Fabreeze! Same with my current bed - given by friend's family, who smoke HEAVILY...

The smell is disgusting...

Ahem.

I've read reports contrary to my friend's statements that even small businesses are losing out - they all seemingly got increased business six months into the ban:

http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2005/04/04/restaurants_bars_gain_business_under_smoke_ban/

Then again, I recall someone saying that 50% of all statistics are 90% fabricated... or something to that extent.

Anywho, was just curious as to what everyone thought of this. Am I right/wrong/somewhere in the middle? Should I be taken out and shot, or what?

kxmode, that is correct. (I hope you were joking.)

(In case you weren't joking, read below.)

Those lines I wrote are the opening lines to the theme song (and its chorus) to the Disney-esque (but not Disney) movie musical of the same name.

Unless you have an absolute distaste of musicals, which I can understand - everyone has different tastes - I would recommend you see it. It's actually an enjoybale flick, with Dick Van Dyke starring as a bumbling inventor/professor.

'Course, the real star of the show is the car itself. It's a beauty.

EDIT: Had to correct myself, as the movie is NOT a Disney movie....

2. Any funky bugs going around? Apr 4, 2007, 23:46 Dan =0)

I measured my temp 1/2 hour ago (a toasty 100.2F) after feeling rather sick at work today - lightheadedness/dizziness, odd stomach sensations, sore throat, mild headache and overall dull bodyache. Oh, yes, and hocking is so much fun (not).

Might take the day off if tomorrow morning's the same.

My roommates were sick, my family's sick, workmates... bah.

Anywho, I'm going to do something highly unorthodox, and hit the hay right after I'm done with this sentence.

....

Period.
