PHJF: Actually, considering the party wanted me to decide, being that it was my birthday party, I swung my vote toward NT2 because I realized there were a couple members of the group who definitely did NOT want to see Sweeney Todd.

I do, however, disagree with Enahs in that I think I would have enjoyed Sweeney Todd on the big screen, if I'd go see it with friends or by myself... plus the crowd "fun" factor would weigh in on that one, too (think "Rocky Horror Picture Show", or "Freddy vs Jason").

Just my two cents ($10?).

3. National Treasure 2 Dec 23, 2007, 02:33 Dan =0)

Saw it tonight with friends for my "surprise" birthday party tonight - apparently the number of friends who were actually coming was revealed to me by one of my roommates in a slip-up a couple days ago - after dinner, and I must say that the Goofy short that preceded it had me roaring in laughter.

The movie itself was okay, though Diane Krueger was hot and classy-looking as usual.

So, I'm replying to my own post...

Anywho (yes, it's 10:30pm or so), memory's installed - bumped up to 768MB, and significantly faster. Whatever I did inside the case blew away whatever Windows remembered about ANY of the hardware, so it's in process of reinstalling all drivers...

Hi guys,

Thanks to Enahs for the suggestions last night regarding the computer - I'm on it right now (XP Home SP2 w/ 256 MB of RAM.. ugh... I told the family that owns it what to get 6 months ago for RAM, and they haven't gotten it!).

The video card in question is a Radeon 9200 type card from XFX with VGA and S-Video out. There's also an onboard Intel graphics chipset, but they're not using that at all. Anyway, I tried updating the vid driver for the XFX through WinUpdate (bad idea) and it turns out that it only updates the primary driver (updated to 2006...), and not the one for the secondary (still stays at 2004 vintage). I'm rolling back the drivers now, and am going straight to the original source - ATI - to see if there's anything more recent...

I did test RealPlayer playback with their most recent item having been played... one of the Czech TV channels - NOVA (no relation whatsoever to the science program). I would even go so far as to say that it is not at all safe for work - at least in the US - due to extreme lack of clothing, and an extreme abundance of... positions.

Guess I caught the channel at the right time. It'd be a little after 2am there, I think.

30 you say?! So when can we expect the red porche purchase?

I do not care for Porsches much.

An Ariel Atom, on the other hand...

I am convinced that an official Red Ryder carbine-action 200-shot range model BB rifle with a compass in the stock makes the perfect gift.

For me, it would be a personal music studio with a full version of Ableton Live, with a variety of analog and digital synthesizer hardware tossed in.

20. Compy question Dec 20, 2007, 21:38 Dan =0)

So, I'm going to quite possibly NOT visit this family I know tomorrow if I can talk them over the phone about how to display video on their (non-HD) TV (or tell them it's not possible) from their basic Dell Dimension system that just happens to have TV-Out, but the situation is thus:

Dell Dimension 2400 (I think?) system has 15" LCD monitor attached via the old D-sub connector, and S-video out is connected to one of the inputs to the TV in their living room.

I'm unclear on this part, but from what I understood, they bought some subscription to watch Czech programs over the 'net via RealPlayer, which displays happily on their LCD, but when switching over to their TV - or if both LCD and TV are displaying the screen otherwise fine, say, like a web page that has an embedded video - the square where the video would be on the TV is completely black. I have to note that, obviously, the TV is displaying at a lower and weird res such that the text and lines come out "fuzzy", though this hasn't stopped my own iBook from playing videos on their TV...

Now, I told them I'd stop by, but I'm unsure if this is even doable due to some weird form of DRM or another video problem. I know that, since last time I was there several months ago, the drivers were up-to-date, but I don't see how the possibility of even a slightly out-of-date driver would prevent the basic concept of playing video of that sort.

All "RealPlayer sucks"-type comments aside, anyone have any suggestions, or know if this should even work? Thanks in advance!

Thanks guys...

I celebrated by having chinese sausage and udon noodles for dinner, after helping my mother's old former neighbor around her shiny new iMac, and shoveling the front and back steps to my apartment tonight. Yay!(?)

Now just listening to music at half speed for the hellofit, 'cause I can... ("Gong" by Sigur Ros).

EDIT: I'm in Live Chat now if anyone wants to converse there.

From now on, on my future birthdays (such as when I turn 31 a year from today), I will specifically request no chocolate, cookies or candy in abundance, as I've received waaaaay too much of all three today and during the past three weeks...

Hope you moved your car Dan! hahahahaha

Yup - winter parking ban in Watertown is in effect, to allow for plows, so I can't park on the street; being that I couldn't make it up my hill, I went down to the local CVS and dug out a spot to park overnight. Cops said it was fine as long as I get out of there by 7 in the morning when they start making rounds.

The only towing I'd ever had done was in the case of emergency assistance - car won't start/run, etc.

Indeed. I was pumping tunes from my USB stick along the way, so it wasn't a total loss. The sheer number of abandoned cars along the way, however, was astounding - cars probably having broken down or run out of gas, or perhaps whose drivers had gotten sick of waiting... I managed to get through that without much of an issue, keeping it from 0-20 MPH as the situation permitted.

I'm guessing I just need "snow" tires... or all-weather tires if I don't have 'em on my car. Then again, the Elantra is a very light car, so I may just have to through throw a couple heavy-duty sandbags in the back to give it enough weight to try to make it up the hill. It's got very little traction under the current conditions, in any case... so I see these guys in their SUVs flying down the road, comparitively speaking, and I'm tooling along at 20MPH... and I'm still slipping!

Eh, at least I made it home safely, and my car's in one piece. I just have to make sure I get it out of the lot where I'm parked by 7 tomorrow morning.

We've probably got that much around here (eastern mass) - not a lot by our standards... but certainly enough to prevent my car (and a couple others) from going up the hill I live on... oh yes, commute home? I started at 2pm... got home at 9:30pm. This would normally be a 1-hour commute for me.

And of you tards not played HL2 yet and want a copy? I still got an extra gift, to gift. Know anybody who has not and wants to? I have had the damn thing for months now.

I would. But, I have no functioning computer on which to play it. I figure you couldn't afford Bats' loan/mortgage, but maybe you could set aside a few pennies for a brand-spanking new system for my birthday/Christmas?
