15. Re: Key to All Optical Illusions... Jun 3, 2008, 23:28 Dan =0)

I think the reason humans age has something to do with regenerating cells or the lack of it.

Even more specifically than that, I remember hearing/reading something about telomere length having an involvement with the lifespan of a chromosome (and ultimately, a collection of cells that makes up a human or other animal).

10. Re: USB Flash Drive - toast.. rescue? Jun 3, 2008, 14:00 Dan =0)

I believe the "freezer trick" has to do with the moving platters, which would make it useless on a flash drive. I could be wrong though.

As for recovery companies, aren't they prohibitively expensive? What could you possibly have on a 128MB flash drive that would require that kind of expense to recover?

And no offense, why would you only have 1 copy of something on a flash drive which can be easily lost/stolen/thrown-in-the-laundry, etc? Unless it was something you kept in a safe/bank/etc and you thrashed it while examining it.

I could understand paying someone to recover the HD on your desktop if you have no backups. Or maybe something similar if it's business/finance related. But a flash drive really shouldn't be your one-and-only solution for anything unless it's just a copy sitting in a safe deposit box.

Should've cleared up that this was not my own flash disk, but another person's. Documents were saved onto the flash drive directly, perhaps out of habit, or for other reasons. Either way, the drive is not responsive.

Yes, recovery companies are indeed expensive. (User has now decided to forgo and cut losses, anyway, so this is a non-issue. Already explained to the user that a copy of the document(s) can be saved locally...)

At this point, I'm doing this out of curiosity, considering that there's little else to lose.

7. USB Flash Drive - toast.. rescue? Jun 3, 2008, 12:49 Dan =0)

I have on my desk a SanDisk 128MB flash drive that isn't powering on on multiple systems. Tried multiple USB ports, powered and unpowered, no dice.

I'm almost tempted to try the freezer trick used for magnetic HDDs, but somehow I don't think that will help; as well, I'm not up to soldering the flash mem chip onto another flash drive, if that's even possible..

Declare it dead and move on? (Critical files on this one.)

EDIT: Drive recovery companies will probably be the last resort...

4. Re: New MP3 May 25, 2008, 23:16 Dan =0)

even though it sounds neat.

It does sound neat technologically speaking, but then is it a valid "artist recording" if the user can alter it that way? I don't mean to start a war, but I have the feeling there could be (at least some) musicians who would be up in arms about this. I would be fine with it if the volume levels were reset to their defaults upon closing the file in case the user, say, mutes Axl Rose in his efforts to sing "Welcome to the Jungle".

Apart from that, also agreed that it would have to top mp3's quality/small file size/drm-lessness.

I shall never doubt you again, kind sir!

Doubt me all you want. I'm not right all the time, you know.

But yes, looks like exciting news indeed.

I just have one question: Where does all the time go?

All I've managed to: Look for missing dish towels (FAIL - long story), pick up my room (in progress...) and do laundry tonight (in progress...). Other stuff I'd wanted to do / get done, like messing around on my brand-spanking new synth, has been put on the curb for now; then again, tonight is my only "free" night for the foreseeable week.

To sum: I get older, time appears to move faster. Maybe some physicist would like to study age vs. relative perception of time and space? (I kid.)

Any case, quite a few movies out now and that will be out that I'd like to see - hard enough to choose one, let alone multiple, and in what order... on top of figuring out how to use the rest of my dwindling spare time.

Yup, but I have the feeling your prognosis was far better at the time than mine. And now I'm 30, around 180lbs and 5'8" something or other. Sometimes still called "retarded", or inexclusively from someone we all know and hate, "tard", ( ) from time to time, but otherwise I'm all right. Go figure.

Anywho, off to sleep in a bit.

Have a good one and see you guys at my next lurk/post.

To put this into perspective, I'd been pumped full of steroids in the first two years of my life... that certainly must be a considered factor, I think. And the doctors didn't do that for jollies - I was quite the extreme preemie, at three months early and a bit less than 1 1/2 pounds, with all sorts of complications and issues.

I would not get to upset Dan, at least, wait until you get a second opinion.

Since the person running the machine is not a doctor, technically I don't even have a first opinion.

EDIT: Not sure I understood the second half of your post, grammatically.

12. Re: Who's that kid? May 20, 2008, 14:38 Dan =0)

Shia Labeouf.

Agreed that he's been in quite a bit lately. I also remember him as a bumbling sidekick of sorts in I, Robot.

Crap. Didn't realize he was in Constantine, either (again as sidekick).

Having a look at his upcoming films here: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0479471/

It would seem that indeed he is going the route of the next "superstar" group.

I find him to be an okay actor, but (so far) nothing to write home about.

Transformers 2: The Cash-In.

Kinda young there man.

30. "You're just a baby!" would say most people...

Anywho, if anyone wants to, feel free to e-mail me about this. All I'm doing at this point is laughing about it (not for its humerus factor, though).

As to Indy... I'll be there. Maybe not on opening night, but oh yes, I'll be there.

I find it odd that the sidekick is named after a type of dog. "Mutt" just doesn't work as a name for me, no matter how much of a nod it may be to Indy being named after the family dog...

On a completely different note, I (unofficially, through work) may have been diagnosed with osteopenia - scheduling a doc appointment asap so I can have it officially checked out. Hopefully they can throw me a bone and figure out what's going on, so I can figure out what to do about it.

EDITS: Fixed a few sentence issues...

7. Re: Vent - Verizon Wireless May 15, 2008, 06:56 Dan =0)

If I had to go with a new service provider my first choice would be ATT/Cingular.

Thanks HE and Bats (so far). I haven't really heard, at least around here, too many good things regarding quality of service with ATT/Cingular, but I'll check 'em out anyway. And no, I'm not shelling out my stimulus check for an iPhone (much as I love how that thing works...).

(Whether it was the service - ATT/Cingular - or the phone itself, a coworker's husband bought for their daughter an iPhone for her birthday. At the time, at least, a signal was only available either outside the house.... or in their basement! Hopefully this has improved as of late....)

Well, off to my mother's and then to hospital... whee!

EDIT: Whoops, also meant to add in response to Bats' statement:

You should be able to download a diff firmware and haxor the phone anyway....cables are like 4.00 on ebay.

The point for me is to not give Verizon, or their wireless division anyway, my hard-earned cash, and give it to some other, slightly more benevolent carrier.

Currently have the razr phone with ATT, everything is wide open.

Is it the original V3, V3c, V3m or some other flavor?

3. Vent - Verizon Wireless May 15, 2008, 00:35 Dan =0)

I'm considering seriously going with another wireless carrier, as Verizon is continually locking down phone features that I feel should be open and available to its customers... a bit of (brief) history:

I had a Motorola Razr V3m for the last year-and-a-half without any issues through Verizon, with the default Verizon firmware at the time... it wasn't great, but I had Bluetooth capability for my headset, could (and still can) use pics I've taken with the camera as the phone's background and - this is the big one for me - record sounds and use those recorded sounds as ringtones (e.g. me saying "Ring ring ring" - I was too cheap to pay for another ringtone, and hate the ones that come with the phone).

The battery in that phone had seemed to die and refused to charge... okay, so I stopped by Verizon last Friday, and purchased a spare battery. No dice. Using a another AC adaptor? No luck there, either; so, it must be the phone.

I spend about 10 minutes today idling in the store after I "check in", explain my problem to technical support, got the replacement V3m - for free, despite having been told over the phone earlier that I'd have to pay $50 because of an expired warranty - and charged the battery successfully this time around, with the same ac adaptors/usb cables I had on hand.

I played around with the sound functions on the phone tonight, looking for the "save as ringtone" option for the "ringringring" sound I'd recorded....

The idiots at VZW removed that feature/ability in their latest firmware revision(s), apparently...

I already know Bluetooth is horribly crippled in their phones, but this (for me, anyway) just does it. Great service coverage be damned.

Could anyone here in the Massachusetts area (probably only three of us ) let me know what their experiences were with other carriers - e.g. Sprint, T-Mobile, etc.? Thanks in advance....

Dan =0)

PS I'm driving my mother to the hospital for hernia surgery in several hours... hopefully recuperation will be swift and without too many troubles.
