Still, you have to wonder if Microsoft has made any money from the game sales so far. Even with 4 copies sold per user, how much of that is really going to MS? Each game sells, brand new, at $60. How much goes to the developer, publisher, then to MS? I can't imagine more than 20% of it going to MS. 20% of $240 (60x4) is $48. And that's from brand new games. Most games drop in retail price very quickly. You can pick up many 360 games for less than $30 nowadays.

And last I read, Microsoft is still hoping to make a profit with their game sector, apparently something they've never done yet.

Since both MS and Sony are losing money on their hardware, and only making a little back so far from the games, Nintendo would seem to be ahead, because they actually make money everytime a console is sold. I am curious about the poll that CrimsonPaw mentioned, though. Is this from a legit polling organization, or just some web-based unofficial poll?

PS --
I find all three systems to be quite terrible (see my blog post: "your favorite game system stinks" at http://gerald670.blogspot.com/2007/09/your-favorite-game-system-stinks.html)

You pointed out that there are 120 million PS2 owners. For those people, that's a reason to NOT have backwards compatibility, not TO have it.

If you have a PS2, like me, you don't need backward compatibility. Why? Because you have a PS2. Why do you want to pay for something extra, when you already have it?

Don't you mean handing Nintendo the keys? Neither Sony nor Microsoft hold much of a candle to what Nintendo's Wii and DS are doing, right now.

Anyway, I think it's a smart decision if you make two versions of the PS3, one with backwards compatability and one without it. I have a PS2 already, so when I bought a PS3 I was paying extra money for stuff that I don't want.

Aw, I'm not a huge fan of Halo 3 so far, but didn't the Halo games pioneer the "regenerating health" concept that's now standard practice in all FPS games?

I know some people miss picking up medkits, but I ain't one of them. Of course I'd prefer semi-realistic games like Call of Duty or Rainbow Six not have such silly nonsense, as they turn the games into a bizarre Rambo parody a bit too much... but it works great in FPS games with a more fantastical setting.

(I wish COD/Rainbow games would simply let you DIE, then let you "respawn" by moving you to a different soldier's viewpoint. I don't like mowing down hundreds of enemy soldiers in a game that takes itself seriously. It just seems counter to the game's intention, if you know what I mean. Of course, I'm a flight sim fan and I never "regenerated my plane's structural integrity" whenever I took a cannon shot to my wing. Hehe.)

I'd say Halo 3's inflated scores and bizarre market allure are indicative of blind devotion to something, alright.

Seriously. 300 million dollars in one week? For Halo 3?

3. Re: Yahtzee! Oct 3, 2007, 23:55 Charlie_Six

Agreed I'm in the same boat as Yahtzee too. Never played Halo 1 or 2, so Halo 3 is so far very "meh." I would give it a 8.0/10.

I really feel that the gaming press is being bribed at this point. They have no integrity at all. If they slam a game too hard, something that has massive market value, then they will lose readers and advertisement money. This is just sad. You gotta wonder how often this sellout phenomenon happens in other parts of society, too..

1. need quieter 360 Oct 2, 2007, 20:17 Charlie_Six

anyone know a way to quiet down my 360?!?!?
I'm becoming less and less tolerant of its extremely loud DVD-drive noise. Can I hook up an external DVD drive or something????

I have the friggin' machine behind a cabinet and it's still too loud.

Ya the demo was great, but I thought the frame rate was pretty low throughout the whole thing. It feels much lower than what we're used to on the PS2 Ace Combat games, even.

After playin the COD4 beta and seeing its incredibly high frame rate, I'm kinda worried that Ace Combat will be too choppy. I want high frame rates over graphics in a game like this 8)

Yeah, what's incredible is that "Halo 3 isn't that great, it's just OK" style impressions are all over the Internet, and yet they are not represented at all by any of the gaming press' reviews. Meanwhile, this phenomenon doesn't exist in the book/music/movie review world. Is this because the gaming press is a struggling industry, and needs to whore itself out to the marketplace? I wonder.

This could be potentially really cool stuff. Imagine if the casual gamer can fly excellently but at reduced damage/armor or whatever, then the hardcore sim player gets all the benefits. I'd be happy with a solution like that

10. Beta is super fun :) Sep 25, 2007, 18:00 Charlie_Six

The beta is super fun, but it also feels weird at times. I mean.. the British can't get a standard machine gun.. or mortar..and that feels weird. I mean.. you got a machine gun in a nest, you'd think you could just pick up the machine gun and walk off. Or, pick up the mortar and walk off. Instead the guys inside are like "AHHHH I'm burning to death! HELP! HELPPPP..." then some guy outside is like "So uhhh just leave the nest.." then the guy inside is like "AHHHH I can't!!! I've been chained to this position by the ankle!!"

Of course it's a game and it already makes a lot of unrealistic decisions but these gameplay mechanics just go overboard for me. Regardless, still an awesome game and I will definitely get this expansion soon. My only gripe is that I have to pay for the singleplayer campaigns, too, despite the fact that I never play RTS singleplayer campaigns. Wish there was a "multiplayer only" edition of the game with a discount or something, u know??

21. AWESOME!!!! Sep 25, 2007, 17:56 Charlie_Six

This is such good news to me. I've enjoyed pretty much all the Tom Clancy games, and to see them do air combat is great news. I am a bit confused about how the game will be marketable. If it's super complicated, no one will play it. But if it's too simplistic, people will be like "This ain't Tom Clancy!"

When I start playing this with mouse and keyboard on my PS3, I will forgive my PS3 for all of its sins.. the high price, the degraded visuals compared to the 360, the crappy motion sensor, no vibration..

All will be forgiven!!!
