Youtube doesn't even have stereo, from what I can tell. I've been uploading loads of videos with stereo audio to Youtube, and they all come out Mono. It sucks!
The file size difference between stereo and mono sound is pretty small so it's frustrating that they'd remove it.. |

Since I never watch any popular sporting events on TV, I'm not sure what draws people to watch sports in the first place. I have fun playing sports (even though I totally suck at them), but I don't "get" the appeal of watching people play sports, no matter how good they are. Every now and then I'll watch someone do a perfect Expert run on a Rock Band song and be impressed, but that's about it. But, I guess popular sports spectating offer cubicle-bound people a way to live vicariously through the physical prowess of others. Meanwhile, video game spectating doesn't do such a thing. A cubicle person is just sitting there watching another person sitting there. In the game, they are doing cool things, but virtual reality isn't enough, apparently..
This all being said, I would love to be able to personally participate in a video game tournament every weekend or two. Fork up $5 and get a chance at winning a big jackpot. That would be awesome. The only thing that's like that in my area is a big Gamestop in San Jose that hosts tournaments. But that's an hour away, so it's not worth it. We really need to have tournament places everywhere, with weekly tournaments. |

The online play was why I pre-ordered my Smash Brawl copy. Too bad the online play SUCKS ASS. Really laggy and half the online game doesn't even work (can't connect to people who aren't on my friends list). Nintendo really dropped the ball and promised way too much. Hopefully this will all get fixed up somehow..
Offline, the game is awesome.. but i got the game to have online play with people at a moment's notice. |

*nods in agreement with Zeph*
I think the crummy map design is in due in part to the "make sure casual gamers can play and know what's going on" approach to the game. If you have enemies shooting from very high elevations, people with poor situational awareness will be constantly getting picked off by "invisible" foes.
Same goes with big maps. Small maps are easier to comprehend for people, I suppose.
For me, COD4's multiplayer was fun but the maps were terrible. And without vehicles for me to hop into, I didn't see what made the game better than Battlefield 2, 2142, or Frontlines Fuel of War. I think people must be really enjoying the level up system in COD4.. |

Co-op hindered by move to online play? |

I dunno how valid this is now that everyone has broadband, but I remember back in the day that co-op was difficult to pull off because of internet lag. When 2-4 people are in the same room on the same console, there's no lag, even if there are 100 enemies battling it out with your party of friends.
But take all that data online, spread the players across the country or world.. and it's another issue, perhaps. Or it may have been a while ago. World of Warcraft and other MMOs can get away with "massively multiplayer" stuff more easily, I'd imagine, due to the semi-turn based nature of the game.
Even today, I think co-op is hindered because video gaming is, for most people, a pick-up-and-play ordeal. They don't call their friends up and say "Hey, let's meet up online and play." They just play with random strangers. And strangers usually don't make good co-op buddies. They'd rather just frag each other or work as a team against another team, but not really slog through a big campaign with just the two of them.
Anyway, I think a big thing co-op games need to do is to emulate the "watching movies or TV with friends" experience. People do these things and discuss the story together. But for most games, people play together as they would a sport.. and not so much as they would a movie. To really expand things, we need the movie-going experience too, I think. There needs to be more stuff that sparks real conversations between people, which movies can do. Well that's my two cents! |

Re: Prof: Game Industry Barbaric.. |

Did you actually read the article? Cuz the professor is saying pretty much exactly what you're saying. You're gettin upset with a guy you're in agreement with!
Anyhoo, the point the professor is making is that games like Army of Two are spreading a message of acceptance towards mercenary groups like Blackwater. EA responded by saying this ain't so, and that the game is neutral towards the existence of merc groups. I thought EA's response was pretty weak, but whateva.
The prof also expressed dissapointment that so many games are of a violent nature. I agree, although I almost play violent games exclusively. I'm just honest with my hobby is. It's basically the inverse of what the film, music, and TV industry is. You turn on the tube and someone dies once every 4 hours, it seems. In many popular video games there's 2 deaths per minute at least! I love that, but it is much more barbaric than what is commonly seen in greek plays/movies/novels, IMO.
Shucks, bluesnews' tagline is "all the carnage that's fit to post!" It's a site on game news. I don't know any general TV/movie sites that have a similar tagline. TV.com doesn't say "TV.com... kill 'em all and let God sort 'em out!" Heh |

This.. is... SAN DIEGO!!!!!!!!!!
lol.
(PS - Frank miller, creator of 300 and Batman: The Dark Knight, appears to be a hard-core right-winger. Take that for what you will.. He also wrote Robocop 1 and 2, but both of his scripts were mangled beyond recognition. Ironically, the end result was that the creative team behind Robocop 1 called their movie a "left-wing fascist" movie. See Wikipedia for all of the above. lol)
(PPS - i think Frank Miller should consider making video games)

Dunno what people are complaining about. The game looks like great fun. I'm a big fan of 2142 but the lack of enjoyable air combat in that game has kept me away.
Hopefully we'll get widescreen support with this.
My gripes... WW2 game. Ugh. Seriously. Let WW2 go. Plus, cartoonifying WW2 seems a bit..... strange. Stranger than all the other "reenact WW2 while eating popcorn" entertainment forays, even. |
