someone who likes the gameplay? why is it inherrently less fun on a PC, or is that a bit of graphical snobbery I see?

well as others have pointed out, the software *is* bug free for 99% of users. I have a few minor bugs but nothing drastic, and considering Ive got at least 150 hours of fun from a $45 package, I think I'm doing pretty well out of it.
MMORPGs prove that people *will* pay ongoing fees, but there is no granularity. You are either a subscriber or your not, with zero incentive to be a casual *occasional* gamer as Im sure many would like (for a smaller fee).

its not your fault. its the way game economics work. If you buy BF2 and play it once a month, DICE get their $45 or whatever. If I buy it and play ti every day sicne release (possibly true) they get the same cash.
They have very little incentive to care about the hardcore gamer. Everyone is just a sale, worth the same amount to them.

If the sales model differed, the game was $10 to buy, but cost $0.02c for every game (rough guess) from an online account, then things would be VERY different, and I guess much much better. The problem is, most gamers love to whine, and I'm sure they would whine at the thought of paying based on usage, even though the amount would be tiny.
In theoretical economic terms, the hardcore gamers are a massive inefficiency. To truly realise the income that the game deserves, it should be earning based on how much its played, not how many people shelled out for the box.

Ive kept an eye out for this one for the last few years. Is it ever shipping? It could be good, has a great theme, but for someone like me who has only a causal (maybe a few hours a week) desire to play a MMORPG, is it worth getting involved? it sounds like an enourmous time sink to understand how everything works. Where are the MMORPGS for the less hardcore?

agreed 100%. Global high scores matter to 0.01% of players. IF someone really wants to be commander, I let them. I just wanta fun, bug-free and unvaried game.

If it was bug-free and didnt take 20 mins to load, I'd probably buy the booster packs, but often I just cant be arsed to sit and stare at the BF2 load screens.

why arent there any generally-played modded maps for BF2? Every other FPS I've played has been modded to bits, it seems like there arent any new BF2 maps. Anyone know why? do they not show up within the game or something?
BF2 is too buggy for me to pay for an expansion

i actually like tycoon games, and like the *idea* of this, but as usual, its a dumbed down casual looking game that doesnt give sim fans what they want. Bit like coffee tycoon.
bah!

buddy checkins are excellent. so is the idea of weekly code reviews, or even *shock* pair-programming. I spoke up on all of these in ym last job, but apart from very limited buddy checkins, everything was rejected. Thats big company management for you, they dont want software developers (nor will they pay for them) they just want cheap hackers and bodgers. No suprise that they churn out buggy code.

thats true, but more experienced coders arent as likely to make such glaring mistakes. Most decent coders give their changes a quick shakedown test anyway before even checking in their work.
In any case, all this debacle makes me less and less likely to buy the next battlefield game.

it is staggering the tendency they have to screw up stuff with each patch. The server browser thing could have been spotted by any half-decent QA team. It's quite obvious that they failed to update hit boxes for the list once the list got resorted, and anyone who altered that code should have understood enough about it before they touched it.
Its pretty clear that EA are using fresh-out-of-college coders to do their patches, probably not the people who worked on the game originally. This is what happens when you let the experienced and capable staff leave. Until games develoeprs start paying good coders decent money, you will always have this problem, as anyone with any experience and skills is going to leave to form a start up so they can earn more cash.
Whoever is the producer for the battlefield series seriously needs to be given the push.

the justification for all sales tax is that its ahrd to avoid. People can swing all kind of lies when it comes to dodging income tax, but a sales tax is almost impossible toa void. For real creepy millionaires with mega-accountants, its the only tax they pay.
Valve arent the only people charging vat, any game you buy online (including mine) as a UK resident should have the tax added, either that or the develoepr swallows the 17.5% cost, which I doubt. Its the same as a sales tax being charged automatically for residents of some US states.
I dont think this is overpriced, $20 isnt even a good pizza and a glass of wine here, and Im sure ep1 lasts longer.
I wont buy it, purely because I never got round to finishing HL2 Personally. I dont see how people rush through these games so fast.

I worked on copy protection code for games. They can easily make the demo scrambled with a different key to the main exe. If they could be bothered.

shudder. what kind of maniacs put copy protetcion on demos?

glad to see a multiplayer RTS demo, if its any good, me and my buddy will end up getting 2 copies for LAN games. All RTS games benefit hugely from multiplayer demos these days.

12. Re: Unexpected! May 23, 2006, 12:55  cliffski

so they STILL havent fixed it so you can turn off this kind of voice-spammed hell:

"enemy infantry spotted"
"enemy infantry spotted"
"enemy infantry spotted"
"enemy infantry spotted"
"enemy infantry spotted"
"enemy infantry spotted"
"enemy infantry spotted"

for 20 minutes in your ears ALL THE TIME on 64 player maps.
WTF cant we turn this off?
I dont care about any other tweaks, and in an 84 megabyte patch, you would think they could fix that.
WTF is in those 84 megs anyway? its not an 84MB exe and theres no new assets, so WTF?

they never will. That way they can keep making it, and keep making advertising money. Shows dont end when the story ends. they end when the advertising revenue drops.
Thats whats great about films like Lord Of The Rings. Based of a very old book, its a real story. If it was a modern story, they would have kept it open ended. Frodo would NEVER reach mt doom, not as long as there were good audiences each week ;(
