News Comments > Epic on Piracy and PCs
15. Re: Epic on Piracy and PCs May 17, 2010, 13:13  cliffski

PC gaming definitely makes money, very good money. I myself make a living from it, albeit in niche gaming. Piracy has certainly not killed PC gaming, never will.
It *has* affected the nature of pc games thoguh. I bet you that whenever, whoever views this comment, unless you block them, will see ads for 'free-to-play' browser MMOS. They are everywhere, and making big cash, because they are impossible to pirate. The other games making decent cash are the big name MMOS, again, very difficult to pirate.

Epic specialised in making first person and third person shooters, the style of game that exactly matches the piracy-prone teen male gamer, so its no surpirse priacy seems very bad to them.

Indie gaming is still very minor, very niche and runs mostly on goodwill. there is zero chance of it taking the place of classic PC gaming hits like Age Of Empires or Quake. Even the humble bundles million dollars wouldnt cover the art bill for a game like that.

I'm stereoblind and cant see 3d at all, so it just means I never spend a single cent on movies ever again.
3D is a silly gimmick. Remmeber 'sensurround!!!!!!!!'. No neither do most people, yet it was the future of movies.

News Comments > Crytek's Demo Doubts
58. Re: Crytek's Demo Doubts Apr 18, 2010, 04:24  cliffski

I couldn't agree more. This guy is a fucking retard who does not understand marketing, business, or customer service. And I don't say that as a whiney angry internet gamer geek. I say that as someone who sells games for a living.

I will ALWAYS release free demos. ALWAYS. I would have to be mental not to do so. If I could isolate people who bought a game in the last month, I would PAY THEM to try demos of my games. People pay to get mouseclicks on adverts, why the f**k would you not be prepared to pay out money for people to TRY your product?
Unless your product is hype > substance and shit, and you know that people who try it won't buy it.
This is completely, utterly mental and insulting to gamers intelligence.

Flawed logic. I can use a toothbrush for a year. Does that mean I should pay $500 for it? I can wear a pair of shoes for several years. Therefore, I should pay $5000 for it. Value is relative and $25 for a purely superficial mount is a waste of money.

Please stop Jerykk, because right now I agree with you 100%, and that has never happened before. Maybe this is the end of the world

News Comments > Borderlands DLC Interview
8. Re: Borderlands DLC Interview Apr 14, 2010, 12:51  cliffski

I have to say I agree. I'm often taken aback at how easy interviews are, regardless who is asking the questions. the games companies DO need coverage, and they arent going to take their ball and go home just because an interviewer asked them about pricing, or about working conditions, or whetehr screenshots were bullshots, etc etc.

I'd love to see some tougher interviews for game developers, and publishers. Activision should be ripe for quizzing about how they handled the whole call of duty affair, for one.

Prez wrote on Mar 23, 2010, 06:12:

A lot depends on how well known the property is to start with, and how well advertised the sale is. A Steam sale will always get my attention, while I'm sorry to say that I didn't even know about any sales for any of your games, Cliffski.

This is the factor that gets totally ignored. Steam sales generate huge boosts in revenue because they get HUGE publicity. Its not a matter of the price, as much as the eyeballs. If you do real, serious, genuine price experiments (I've done loads) then you don't announce them or trumpet them. You cahnage the price quietly and observe the effect. Otherwise the data is massively skewed by a boost in publicity.
Obviously if you are doing a big sale to get more attention, thats different, but in terms of deriving the optimum long term product price, you can't deduce that from short term sales.

Jerykk wrote on Mar 23, 2010, 02:59:
I don't think that makes for much of a correlation. Charging more for your game doesn't make it sell more.

Actually it can do. Everyone assumes that all products sell in a simplistic way with a nice easy-to-grasp indifference curve for the customer, but that just isn't true. Sometimes low prices puts people off and high pricing attracts. If I drop Democracy 2 to $14.99 it sell less COPIES than at $19.95. I tried it,. it's a fact, with nothing else changing over the course of a price experiment.

People use the price as an 'anchor' to set expetctations for a product. This is why if you offer people wine in a blind test against an 'open' test where you try expensive wines against cheap (for example), you can trick people into actually thinking wine tastes better than it does, because ist expensive.
There have even been large scale, peer-reviewed experiments where making people taste a drink from a yellow can convinces them its more lemony...

Anyway, it is just NOT TRUE that dropping a price automatically raises revenue. It's true in many cases but not all. Jeff has been around decades, if anyone knows his exact market, it's him.

News Comments > Steamworks Microtransactions Planned
28. Re: Steamworks Microtransactions Planned Mar 22, 2010, 05:12  cliffski

Spore was a dissapointing dumbed down game design that shipped late and failed to match the hype. The fact that it had DRM on it was almost irrelevant to its sales. The fact that 99% of the anti-DRM cmapaigenrs spent weeks shouting on messageboards drowns out the sales figrues, which are mostly people who never, ever think to comment on some internet forum about their hobby.

I dont like, or use DRM, but in financial terms, DRM does not seem to be a disastrous move for companies, sadly.

When you go to the movies, is it only $1.50 for a 90 minute movie?
Don't forget they sell you overpriced popcorn and force you to watch ads for that too.. and its a one-shot not to eb repeated deal at a time of their choosing too.

Why do gamers expect entertainment for a tenth of the price of every other form of enetrtainment?

I hate the modern trend for trailers to be just arty FMV that has absolutely nothing to do with wtf the game will look like.
Thanks guys, I feel like I know less about this game now than before I watched the trailer..

I agree 100% games are supposed to be fun. The idea that someone dictates what hardware you can sue is silly. Those people should fuck off to console land and not even make PC games any more, as they clearly don't 'get it'.

A tale in the desert

Yup, the only MMO that seems to have anything original about it is Eve, and that is overcomplex and still a bit of a level grind. Still one day maybe something new will come along...

I gave this a go, but rapidly lost interest. It looks really bad and the interface is very wobbly and needs work, the camera being especially unusable. In a world with company of heroes and men of war, this has no chance.

the new races also get new weapons and some extra modules. For example the tribe add on has kinetic weapons firing in salvos, and also have the only repair modules for frigates in the games, so tactically they play better. Their ships have weak armor and weak shields and much higher hitpoints, meaning they last longer, but take damage earlier.

The next DLC/add-on race also has some new stuff, radiation guns and limpet mines, to be exact

I've been working on a campaign-based add on for a while, but it's a way off.
Not a full-on 4x, but just a galaxy map where you choose which mission to fight next, using the same fleet, and repairing ships between battles, like a mini-campaign

Maybe the tribe expansion should be called DLC instead? I use the terms interchangeably but they mean different things to different people. I'm very explicit about what's in the tribe expansion, and what isn't, and intend to keep that up.
