Agreed 100%. I agree with everything the id guy said. I used to work for lionhead and now I run my own mini-games company, so I have some perspective on this. Lionhead used to be PC-centric too. You don't think they notice all those Black and White torrents? Any surprise that Fable was a console title first? There seem to be a lot of people trotting out excuses to justify big torrent collections of games they got for free. Most games have demos, you have no excuses. People buy £250,000 houses on the basis of walking around them for an hour, yet somehow won't spend £20 on a game on the same basis. It's bullshit to suggest piracy is justified, people do it because they like free stuff and think they won't get caught. People also generally don't give a fuck about the people who make games for a living. When called out on this, they bleat about how the game they spend 12 hours downlaoding and 3 weeks playing 'sucked' anyway, and wasmn't worth the money. If I had access to it, I'd make an MMo or a console game tommorow. Purely because there is no piracy (don't make me laugh talking about pirate servers, thats a trivial number of geeks who all hack and cheat on a server that has no moderation. yay!) Unless any of you have worked for 2 years on something working long hours and putting tons of effort in, just to see some 9yo git dsitruibuting it for free, you really have no idea how that feels, or the real impact it has. I know one warez forum with 230,000 registered users. Yeah, piracy isn't a big deal. Riiighhhhhhhht. |

| I think tis people upgrading to vista who have problems. My new machine had vista pre-installed, and it has run flawlessly, with an 8800 GTS. Not a single glitch, no freezes or bugs, and it looks blinding. I've yet to find a game it can't sail through with maximum everything. |

but who would choose to play on a hacked server, by definition full of scr1pt k1dd13s doing their best to grief and cheat with macros, exploits and so on? For $10-20 a month and unlimited play time on a legit, monitored server, you'd be insane to cut corners that badly. |

| I earn royalties from my games! But then I'm a small-time indie dev. I learned a long time ago, after having share options in two well known companies, that they mean nothing, and the only way you will really benefit from successful games is if you personally own the IP. |

This is the guy who wants games to pop up with "coca cola would like to sponsor this magic sword for you". I'm not kidding. this is what he is quoted as saying in edge magazine. No thanks, I see enough intrusive ads in real life thanks. Just make a decent game. I'll pay. |

"Guess why SWG has only 125K - 175K"
sooooooooo......... theres a game with 125,000 people playing it raking in $1.25 million a MONTH, or approx 12 million dollars a year, probably costing about a tenth of that to maintain, and you would pull the plug on it? I must assume you do not run a business from this. |

yawn. You may think that consoles are the future. fine, go for it, enjoy your analogue stick fun. I'm just not in favour of shoddy ports. You fancy trying to play a PC-designed RTS that get a 10 minute port to the console?
Of course, wanting to play games on a platform that are primarily designed for that platform clearly makes me nostalgic. Jesus... |

| to be honest, these days, when I see that a game has been targeted at consoles + PC, I just ignore it. Too many shoddy PC ports, with substandard graphics, appalling control schemes and sod-all modability means they just aren't worth my time. Increasingly I tend towards obscure, indie developed PC only games. |

I'd agree, but tragically that game is federation-only. Who the fuck wants to be some l4m3 redshirt git on the entertprise? surely everyone wants to be ferengi, cardassian, borg, jem h'adar or klingon? They are cynically saving each interesting race for expansion packs to milk cash from everyone. Typically big retail game dev, with their 'triple A' budgets and their focus on squeezing as much cash for as little content as possible. bah! |

| exactly. I'm really enjoying playing far cry at the moment. Its an old-looking game, but who gives a damn? If I just wanted to see amazing visuals I'd sit and play the 3dmark demos. |

I think its grim to demand dx10 graphics from all games, because that means maybe a dozen huge mega budget games a year, mostly made by EA and microsoft. cutting edge visuals require huge teams. However, saying you have 'stunning graphics' is just asking for it I guess. I make smaller budget games, using Directx7 but I promote them as being original or fun, not on their graphics engines. Smaller devs cannot compete visually in most cases, they should not try to do so. |
