Indeed. And if you don't do that, you pay someone else to actually play the game on your behalf in China.
I just don't get what's so much fun about grindfest MMOs. There was such great potential for online persistent worlds, and they turned them into the most tedious genre ever devised. *sigh*

I'm doing my bit to make proper indie games that don't just copy existing genres. Plus there are introversion and as few others.

couldn't agree more
I bet he pirates everything and that "all games are shit" according to him. How else can he justify leeching his games off honest people?
What an angry, empty and sad life.

what problem are you having with securom? its on my PC from 3 different games. I wouldn't even know it was there if not for spotting a registry entry once.

the problem is kids don't buy it, they just steal it. That is clearly and obviously the problem.

News Comments > Far Cry 2 DRM Follow-up
47. Re: Jeez, what's the big deal Oct 15, 2008, 12:45  cliffski

Well said. I don't use DRM any more, but when I did, I never had a single complaint. Ever.
99% of users have no problems with DRM. the 1% who do are very vocal.
The flipside is that DRM doesn't work, and you should give customers what they want. But 99% of people claiming they will 'cancel their pre-order' never pre-ordered the game. It just sounds good

46. Re: Upgrade vs. new computer Oct 15, 2008, 12:43  cliffski

if you torrent it, you make their point, not yours. You just prove that piracy is a problem on the PC. If you want to make a stand against DRM, that's fine, but don't pirate the game, that undermines your point.

Chalk me up as another potential buyer if there is a demo. Its sad so many games don't have one, because at the right price point, bought online with a decent demo, this could be a decent seller for people like me addicted to Company Of heroes.

Indeed, plenty of decent indie PC games. World of Goo is coming soon, and it's pretty fun. And I have to disagree with my ex-boss (Peter) here. I just released my own game yesterday (http://www.positech.co.uk/kudos2)

which sucks for today's young and their kids, who will almost certainly end up in jobs where they produce IP, unlike grandpa who worked in a factory and had a good pension.

"The DRM is the "root" cause of the problems with the patch. "

says who? You have seen the source code and debugged these issues personally?

agreed. limiting the user accounts is insane. And why not limit the activations to 3 per 6 months or something? that way the games resell value is still there and nobody need fear running out.

probably because 99% of buyers don't reformat their PC, and tire of a game after a few months. I only installed bioshock once, never finished it, ditto half life 2. It really doesn't bother me that installs are limited, until you call the publisher.
I understand why this annoys *some* customers, but those who argue about it the most need to realise they are a tiny minority of gamers, even if they are a majority of people who spend all their time posting on digg.

5. Re: 500,000 copies Sep 5, 2008, 10:55  cliffski

as an indie game dev myself, I'm guessing about 4 to 5 times as much. So they are getting a 50/50 split between retail and online.
It could even be stronger than that, I know I get about 8 times more per sale from online vs retail.

4. Re: No subject Aug 30, 2008, 05:30  cliffski

it is trivial. given the power requirements of video cards it would make a much bigger difference if they just promoted budget and older games more than stuff like crysis.
Not that I want them to do that as such.
Of course the real carbon saving happens if everyone buys games direct on-line instead of having boxes pointlessly shipped around the world to stores...
