Has anyone in the history of forum discussions come out and said the following?:
You know, you're right. I was wrong. It's all good.
I'd have so much more respect for the dude that says the above than the guy who's obviously wrong (Batman...sorry dude, you're wrong here) but insists he's not. Being the bigger man does so much more to polish character. Being a douche, however, tarnishes it quite a bit.
Let me guess what you'll say, Batman: something like, "I don't care if I get your respect."
In that case, we're both winners! Woo hoo!!!

The Doom trailer looked good. This means nothing.
That's true. The Fantastic Four trailer was amazing too, especially the music. And what a piece of dookie THAT flick turned out to be.
Trailers are supposed to pique interest.

...and really, for all intensive purposes... Sorry for doing this but it's just as easy to get it right.
The phrase is "intents and purposes."
You guys are smart so it hurts to see this sort of thing.

Give 'em a bloody chance. They're new developers starting out, so what their website looks like shite. In a couple of years, they're either gone or making better games. A bit of encouragement doesn't harm anybody. Sometimes I feel new devs shouldn't even bother to get on Bluesnews 'cause they'll only get slagged off Wait a sec, Unko. I've seen press releases from small launches get a warm reception on Blues before. But then, those releases better-described what the game was. So not all "little guy" outfits get slagged off, only the poorly-worded and ill-thought-out ones get that treatment.
In fact, reading enough Blues boards will give you a very complete education on what to include (and exclude) from your press release.

So far, we've learned that Quake 4 is a really great yet shitty game, not worth the paltry $50. FEAR is a derivative masterpiece also not worth a mere $50. HL2's facial animations are still woefully terrific. Celestial Toad is framing his id software shareholder's certificate. Riley Pitz is still looking to find a fellow contrarian worthy of his forensic skills. Derek Smart has submitted an application.
Goofiness aside, I'm currently halfway through FEAR and I think it's pretty well done. The immersion and creepiness reminds me of System Shock 2, however, it has some pretty big clipping issues; enemies behind me can often see through the wall I have my back against. But that's really the only flaw so far and it's not a showstopper. I'm very much enjoying saving my game before firefights, then going back to replay them and the devs are right...it never is the same. Kinda like FarCry, which rocks like a cockfight.
Since I didn't really care for Doom 3 (and I didn't think too highly of Quake 2), I've passed on Quake 4 for now. Perhaps later.
Wishing I could sign off like Ray Marden, Horace Pankin

This one makes me think of the MST3K episode Space Mutiny, featuring those hot, half-naked, dancing chicks called "Ballerians".
Maybe that's what this game is about.

I totally forgot about copying code from computer maagazines so i could have free games and programs. I remember doing that for "Laser Chess" for my Commodore 64. What a great game that was. And to think I get annoyed at the multiple CD install routine of today? Ha!
I'm at only 23% on FEAR.

I wonder, does he still claim to be a PhD?
He went on and on about being a PhD back in 1997; he was really adamant about it! Post after post contains his claims about 1) his dissertation being published and listed and 2) how he had a PhD from an accredited university. There are literally pages upon pages of his rants on this topic. To read only Smart's side of things would lead you to believe that he was a victim, totally bewildered about his having to defend himself.
Now that the cat has fully emerged from the bag (and has been for a number of years), what does he have to say about his prior claims? If it were me, I'd never visit a forum again, I'd be so ashamed. It's astonishing!
And I agree that this stuff has nothing to do with the games. That doesn't mean these questions shouldn't be asked.

This might not be all that significant to you lot but I figured I'd point it out anyway.
In this day of slagging everything from music to movies to games, there hasn't been a really dissatisfied user experience of Half Life 2? With Steam, on the other hand, there have been many complaints. But even those who complain about Steam are able to separate it from the game experience.
So I guess what I'm saying is that the opinion of HL2 seems to be pretty unanimous. That is so astounding! It's nearly impossible when you think about it...that a game could be so overwhelmingly embraced! Not even System Shock 2 offered this kind of "love-in," and that was a great game, too!
I just thought that was pretty unprecedented. Now, bring on the mods!

Filem, you're right. I wonder if anyone has ever done a study of the negative effects of repeated advertising. In other words, because I get inundated with these popup ads, I'll NEVER purchase a Sony Walkman, ever. Do they not realize this?

Of course, Terra Nova 2 would also kickass. I really liked that game too.
I wrote to Looking Glass one time, asking them a technical question about the original Flight Unlimited (another great game). I mentioned Terra Nova as one of the other titles I had and asked whether a sequel might be coming out. The LG dude wrote back and said, "Don't expect any sequel to Terra Nova, it was a HUGE BOMB." So I guess they lost some money there.
edit: to clarify...the above took place in 1996, friends!

Show me a SINGLE review on a major website or magazine that gives Doom 3 less than 60% or 6/10. You can't. Because what you say about Doom 3 has no basis in fact. Firstly, you're placing way too much importance on printed reviews. Sure, it's the reviewer's job to see and experience games with a more critical eye than the rest of us, but the skills required for being a critic are not handed out on Critic Graduation Day. I'm sure you don't agree with Peter Travers or Roger Ebert about all their movie reviews, right? Some of those game reviewers' opinions may be overstated. Or they may have a hidden agenda. Hey, just like our opinions can!
Secondly, everyone's opinion about Doom 3 is actually 100% true. For them. Facts enter into it, of course, but everyone has their own opinion about those facts.
For example, you say that one of the reasons Doom 3 is a great shooter is because it feels more creative than a WWII shooter. Fair enough. But many would disagree that this element can be argued on merit. All those WWII shooters are based on an actual event so their content carries the kind of weight behind it that a sci-fi suspense game can't have.
My point is that some people may say Doom 3 isn't a great game because it lacks this weight.
One thing is certain, though. No matter what's being argued on this or any other forum, you can count on minimal civility.
Oh, and my vid card question was this: where can I find a GeForce 6800 Ultra? No one has this card in stock! Are they making each of these cards by hand or something? I have the image of a guy with a soldering iron, a stack of unfinished 6800's next to him, and pot of black coffee.

Ok, give me 5 reasons, other than graphics, that Doom 3 is the best FPS to come out in the last 3-4 years. Why does it deserve a better score (94 than any other FPS during that time? Now that's a good question. I've already given up waiting for responses to my vid card question so I may as well watch this debate unfold.
For what it's worth, every message board I've been on features very similar opinions on Doom 3: a majority of "great engine, bad game" and at the same time, a vast minority of "a classic FPS, the best shooter in years."
