Good to see XCOM topping the charts. Not so good to see that Dishonored isn't even on the charts. |

as long as you aren't in NA On the bright side, NA customers get $10 in GMG credit if they pre-order the game, bringing the total to $35. This credit will also be given to anyone who previously pre-ordered, which means that people who got it for $37 (through the trade-in deal) will now get it for $27. Not a bad deal at all. |

X-COM is one of those rare properties that I love so dearly that I am super anal about it and freak out when anyone messes with the formula (Way more so than with Fallout, so I was able to enjoy FO3 and NV). I by no means think this game is gong to suck - It looks really good. It's just that they named it XCOM... Bah, I'm just going to stop posting about it. Everyone is excited about it and I don't want to sound like the guy who has to pooh-pooh everyone else's enthusiasm. I'd estimate that 90% of NMA members enjoyed Fallout 3 and New Vegas once they got past their blind hatred of change.
Getting past one's own prejudices is one of humanity's greatest dilemmas. No, they still hated Fallout 3 because it only provided further evidence that Bethesda has terrible writers. New Vegas was a much better game with much better writing and a worthy successor to Fallout 2.
On a side note, I love how Game Informer is so quick to dismiss the advantages of the PC version over the console versions. Guess it makes sense, since GameStop relies entirely on used sales and you can't buy used copies of Steamworks games. |

| I didn't like how they revamped the damage system in Hot Pursuit. Giving cars a health bar is a step back from realistic locational damage ala High Stakes. Also, running over spike strips should be game over. |

Looks like I'm back to waiting for the kickstarter X-COM remake project. Xenonauts is definitely more faithful to the original X-COM but I don't think that necessarily means the new XCOM will suck. Granted, the XCOM demo was pretty terrible but that's mainly because it only had two levels, one of which was a worthless tutorial and the other was set to Easy. You can actually edit a config file and set the difficulty to Classic, which makes a huge difference in the AI and overall experience. |

| I'm sure it will go lower eventually. The fact that they're already selling it at half-price means it isn't selling very well. I wouldn't be surprised to see it for $15-20 during the Black Friday and Christmas sales. |

First-person != FPS. FPS = First-Person Shooter. Emphasis on the shooter part. Just because your game has a first-person perspective does not automatically make it a shooter.
Anyway, I thought this was going to be a generic fantasy dungeon crawl but the story they've released thus far is refreshingly sci-fi. |

Anyway...Isn't that "one word" kind of his point?
If you could come up with a few more words I think you might be on to something, but the two other single player games from the last year that came to mind also have some kind of online component (Dark Souls, Dragon's Dogma).
There seems to be quite a few people here calling him an idiot when what he's saying is really, really hard to argue with if you look at the list of AAA games from the last few years. There's less than a handful of them each year. What AAA single player games have hit this year? Dragon's Dogma is the only one I can even think of, since its online component isn't actual multiplayer.
Skyrim and Batman: AC were last year, what else was there?
I'm pretty sure that Bethesda is going to continue making single-player Elder Scrolls games regardless of ESO's success or failure.
As for AAA (in terms of budget) SP-only games that came out (or will come out) this year:
Sleeping Dogs Darksiders 2 Dishonored Hitman: Absolution (Contracts mode doesn't count as multiplayer)
While it's definitely true that most AAA games have a multiplayer component these days, that component is often tacked on. For most games, the focus is clearly on SP. Publishers are just afraid of making purely SP or purely MP games these days. AAA MP-only games are just about as rare as AAA SP-only games. |

And the new pictures look like they took the previously available artwork, compressed the hell out of it, and slapped it back up in all it's ugly glory.
Except with some kind of pausing and action points I didn't have time to watch but can't imagine is a great idea. Which was done in some James Bond game or another, Brothers in Arms, and a bunch of other games. Situational awareness isn't terribly new.
But it's basically a pause menu to activate all the nifty squad powers you get. Your "action points" is just a mana bar. I mean, it was done in Fallout, too, but Fallout had so many other things going on that I actually enjoyed combat being taken away. Again, haven't watched this video, but the brief bit I did see looked slow. No other way to describe it. Not deep, slow. Pausing/slowing down time to let you strategize and manage your squad worked fine in Mass Effect, Dragon Age and every Infinity Engine RPG.
As for the XCOM shooter, it just seemed boring to me. It didn't really have any tension and appeared to be completely linear and scripted, two things that go against what XCOM stands for. Yes, but only one of those was a shooter, and its combat aspects weren't terribly good. We can list plenty of games that were real time with pausing, but none really compare to what the XCOM FPS is, given that they're deep RPS games and not FPS games... I thought ME2 and 3 had pretty good combat and both of those games retained the pausing mechanic. The Brothers in Arms series has pausing as well.
I really don't see how letting the player pause to form tactics and manage their squad would hurt an XCOM shooter. The original XCOM was a turn-based game anyway, so allowing the player to pause is pretty faithful to the series. |

Thanks for the coupon, it's very tempting for Dishonored. I'm still having problems with it being published by Bethesda and their console mentality. Funny thing is if it was just Arkane doing Kickstarter I'd be on it in a flash. I trust Arkane even if it was a beta. I wonder if they will be releasing an editor, that would convince me.
Rewatching Kick Ass, prepping for a little Chloe Grace action, baby! I swear if Arkane wasted her, there will be payback. I wouldn't expect a level editor. I would expect a good port, though, if this is any indication: http://www.bethblog.com/2012/07/13/a-look-at-dishonoreds-many-ui-options/ |

Smellfinger wrote on Sep 29, 2012, 08:00: Why are we arguing about a series that wasn't very good to begin with? There are plenty of platformers from that era that deserve much more praise than Tomb Raider. Such as..? The first two TR games were great for their time. The series got worse over time due to lack of evolution but the same applies to most long-running series. When it comes to pseudorealistic 3D platformers, Tomb Raider and Prince of Persia games are really the only ones worth mentioning.
I knew someone would complain about that, and almost took it out. You're 100% right, but I'm not a Tomb Raider fan. I dislike platforming. I wish Uncharted, especially the most recent, had less shooting and more exploring/puzzles, but I'm pretty happy I rarely had to line up jumps. So, to me, it's a similar game with better mechanics. You probably would have been better off leaving it out. If you don't like platformers, you're not qualified to judge a Tomb Raider game. It's like judging Thief or Splinter Cell if you hate stealth games. Or X-COM if you hate turn-based strategy games. |
