Romero's ideas weren't all good - though I thought the Daikatana concept was excellent - they were creative ideas though.
The original concept for quake, the FPS/Role Play environment thing with hammers, dragons etc was cool as well. I bet that was Romero's.
Fortunately, id seem focussed on delivery of gameplay and graphical engine enhancements, given that they license the engine thats pretty good for gamers. |

This isn't an example of how "books are always better" is wrong. Its an example, if true - haven't read the book, of how books that are made into films are always better than the films they are made into Books aren't always better, but great films live in the memory. Great books change the world |

Ray wrote (Hi Ray)
As for the article, I give Carmack one last really "new" engine and then I expect him to drop out or, along the same lines, push the "director" title to an extreme and heavily reduce his polygon-thinking time... I tend to agree, he's been pushing out new 3d engines since I was about 15, and lets just say I'm no longer 21. In addition the comment long the lines of others will do the engine pretty soon anyway is probably true. When W3D and DOOM came out the engine was what truly made the game. Since Q2 I've been mightily impressed with the level design out of id, Bottom line even if JC left to do rockets or whatever id will continue to do well at least for the next 5 years. |

OK
so the Monty Hall problem is my single favourite "stats are freaky" demo (but I have more - classrom birthdays for example) and as such is repeatedly tried out on unsuspecting acquaintances.
so mucho kudos to blue for the link.
OTOH this particular eg is such a classic there are approximately 1 billion pages on the internet devoted to it (Google shows 18000 but what would they know) that surely it must have featured previously.
In the meantime I have some Monty Hall problem related tips.
Don't confuse your boss with it before a performance appraisal
Don't trigger mathematical and abusive discussions amongst your relatives by using it as a 'game' after a bottle of wine each
don't post random wafflings to an internet board about it - it aint big and it aint clever |

From the article:
I just do not think the worst problem on our sink estates by any means is smoking, What is a sink estate?
where the poor live
No really
Think trailer trash Annie saying "hell, I live in a shithole built on cancerous trash pits, my partner's a violent abusive drunk with a drugs problem and now I'm being told I can't even light a smoke". That was kinda John Reid's point.
edit get the tags right idiot

He went on to argue that it was in the power of the industry "to avoid artificially triggering a new generation before we are ready to deliver it." That isn't a thing to say - hey let the pc overtake consoles again - the argument is, we have a monopoly (or strictly cartel) and can decide when we release stuff, this is in the interest of the industry as a whole.
It is of course entirely not in the interest of the consumer. |

My wife knows I frequent this site and has no interest in games whatsoever. She uses the computer to look for old furniture with the finish falling off. Hey we have some old furniture with the finish falling off - oh no wait that's the furniture falling apart my mistake. |

In deed, it is odd hearing a bunch of married men talking about STD’s and birth control for teens. Indeed! fancy parents being bothered about their kids. |

I'm guessing that a quantum leap in graphics technology means a jump from one energy state to another - i.e. you'll be needing a 3kw power supply not a 300w version. |
