3. Considering a Media Center PC? Dec 28, 2006, 11:47 Awesome Spume

The size of the video or trailer may also affect its playback performance, if your computerís processor is overwhelmed or the video file is too large for your Internet connection speed to handle properly. Closing unused, open programs on the computer can help free system resources.

I have a neat little media PC sat under my telly that I eventually put Win XP Pro on in preference to MCE because MCE is a bitch for hogging system resources. I work it with a tidy little wireless keyboard with built in mousepad dealie. It's a pretty crappy system but the case is about the same size as a DVD player so it looks the part. I was having trouble with my BSG downloads stuttering every few minutes while playing but it was because of an intrusive WIFI application running in the back ground. As far as a PC having trouble playing large video files this is only really a problem when playing WMV or similar content where the processor has an extra layer of DRM to negotiate. Any PC from the last few years will cope with broadcast HD resolutions (don't know about 1080 variants mind you..) if it's in an Xvid format.

Of course Vista will have even more layers of DRM to suck up system resources so I'm not looking forward to it becoming the standard for gaming.

Edited for words, sweet sweet words...

But remember, some say it's just a fad. AH-hahahahahahahahahahahaha!

My 70 year old dad got a black DS Lite as a present from his employees along with a copy of Sega Casino. He's been hooked on the poker games for about a week now. I will rue the day he ever discovers online poker (Mac Mini user - has saved me hours of tech suport) and starts gambling the inheritance away.

There's even a chance I might get my DS back now which he borrowed when Brain Training came out.

Anyway. More importantly how much of a profit is being made on Wii vs PS3 sales? How much more of a development budget has to be paid back as well. Nintendo made a profit off the original Game Cube so it doesn't matter whether they're 1st 2nd or 3rd, just whether they make money. PS3 will take years to pay for itself and the 360 will be doing well if it manages to avoid being the financial black hole the original was.

Oh. How did you pass this up? Derek Smart is a black programmer. Can we still call them black? Jesus. I just called them "them"? I'm going to hell for that. What do you call a guy in the street who's vacationing from Kenya and a witness to a street robbery (performed by a naturalized US citizen from Poland, for the sake of the argument). Do people say, altogther inaccurately, that there was an "African American" witness to the event? Which is politically correct but actually factually incorrect. Meh. Just wondering...

Bioshock (360 and PC) is the spiritual successor to System Shock 2. Will be interesting to see if that one's been Obliovionised (which is still my favourite game for a long while, regardless of its console roots.)

The people who think Spore will be anything but dress-up doll aliens with shallow girl-friendly gameplay are in for a shock.

Good troll post from Venomhed there. Miles beyond his usual work.

The point of buying a Wii is to have access to the virtual console

No it isn't. Those games have passed onto the grey area of abandonware in the minds of most people. We've..I mean, they've been playing them for years and now we're back with Nintendo charging budget game prices for them. So... I can buy a 12 month old PC game for the same amount of money as Mario Bros.

As for the Wii being a hit at Xmas. I brought mine to the family do and the Wii games were popular but not as big a hit as GC Monkey Ball - otoh if Wii controllers weren't so hard to get hold off that could well have been different.

That's pretty impressive (if true) that they got "da ballz" to ban more people than most other MMOs have subscribers

And that sums up the thread right there.

I don't think I would be all that upset if I or my family died from this new one.

Me neither. If it was you or your family. Prick.

The problem is a small but vocal minority of muslims who believe not only are non-believers wrong, they are infidels who may be killed. Christians have also been this retarded in the past (e.g. the crusades) but now most accept the general view that people are free to choose their religion (or lack thereof).

Only atheists accept that people are free to delude themselves with whatever religion they choose to follow because only atheists recognise that there is no divine right to be worshipped. It's incidental that atheists think those who actually follow a god are idiots. Bonus points if you can name the big atheist-inspired war we had that wasn't all about smacking the heathen down.

Christians are still a small-minded bunch of pricks who bristle when a woman gets made a Bishop. Like men should have a monopoly on being bungholes.

As an exercise try running for office in America as an atheist then explain to me how most Christians accept that people have the right to choose whether they follow a god or not.

Anyway when you look at the list of complaints that the muslim world has against the West, in general, it's hard to rationally deny them the right to an armed struggle. I live in a country that's just getting over a low key civil war with a death toll in the thousands rather than the millions typical in the Middle East (once the US gets involved) and while I never supported the IRA's armed struggle (unlike a good many Americans who thought nothing of supplying money to terrorists when the spin was different) I always understood their position. I defy you to ask any half dozen of your closest friends and relatives why muslim terrorists hate America and see if you don't come away with "they hate Christians" or "they're jealous of us" as your main replies.

Ok - look at it this way. No matter what way you put it - this is a Jesus and God country. Can't really argue that nor deny it.

Imagine if I tried to push Jesus and God rules on those in an Islamic country?

Think about it.

We in the United States have become OVERLY TOLERANT!

Jesus. Jesus? Jesus who said "Render unto Cesaer what is Cesaer's" ie the division of God and state. Or the Jesus who said "Turn the other cheek"? Possibly ironically while plotting a bloody awful revenge against the Romans. Possibly not...

Maybe, just maybe it was the Jesus that said "love thy neighbour".

Meh. If you can find one Jesus-based religion in the US that actually adheres to his teachings I will eat your whatever you want, lovely.

Christianity has NOTHING to do with God or Jesus. It was a European invention to organise people to hate dark-skinned foreigners. Job done.

All the judge has to do is ask for someone to replicate how they managed to break their strap. It's 100% impossible to do if you play the way the screen messages tell you never mind the explicit instructions in the handbook.

I won't lie - I didn't read all of the gamersinfo review. I did do a quick search for "bug" and "patch" though. Didn't see mention of either so I have to assume this glowing review refers to a parallel universe version of the game that didn't suck the donkey's dick.

Meh. Why not just buy a PDA and have done with it. They play music, video, ebooks (or whatever else you choose to steal off the interweb) work with WIFI, Bluetooth etc etc. Neat little touch screens too and they're pretty cheap considering. PLUS as I get older I find myself using mine as a backup memory more and more.

I was kinda worried when Sega bought CA but it's actually turned out that MTW2 is less cartoony that RTW. Now they're courting the modding community, which again I'd though they might have clamped down on after the success of some of the Rome mods exclipsed Barbarian Invasion.

and how long before a PC dev has to pay MS for each sold copy (just like console games)

That's an impossibility.
Not only is it an open platform (for developing on,) but the lawsuits over what defines a game and what defines an application would be insanely costly. You'd have devs start bundling basic word processors with their games to get around it.

I think you missed the bit where it said you have to pay Microsoft to get your game listed as an official GFW release. Sure you don't have to but then it won't work with Live Anywhere and wont be included in the GFW sub-system on Vista (which has nice Icons for each game and a rating to show how well it will play on your system and wotnot.) I expect there will be concessions for the XNA mini-games.

I think no good will come from it and it really will be nothing but consolized games (parallel development is going to default to the lowest common denominator). On top of which the intrusiveness and strictures of Vista licensing put me right off it. I've exclusively run legit XP for years now but using my company key so I never had to bother with the activation dance everytime I change something. And I change my main PC a lot. Old ones usually end up at work running Ubuntu (can't trust staff with Windows. hehe.)

Not to mention this could eventually lead to offical GFW PCs certified to work 100% and god help you if you want to build your own system.

Now all they have to do is get TP working on the PS3 and they'll actually have a game worth playing.
