Having multiplayer be the main draw of the game such as with cd keys or something like steam accounts (or blizzard with star craft) is one great way to have a "carrot" instead of a "stick".
If a multiplayer game is popular enough, there will be in-official servers and/or LAN-emulators. Heck, even MMOs are being "pirated" through freeshards.

So as a result, IMHO, its far better to use carrot than stick, and have limited DRM such as steam. Most other measures are useless beyond screwing and annoying legitimate customers.
Of course the carrot works better than the stick when it comes to video games. Video games arent a necessity of life, there are nothing more than luxury. You cannot force someone to pay for something he doesnt need to exist. You will NOT get more revenue by trying to force people into paying. Ubisoft is actually learning this the hard way with their 90% reduction of PC sales after the introduction of Ubi-DRM.

Learn to live with "piracy", learn to make attractive games, care for your customer and dont spend ressources on people who wont give you their money anyway.

What needs to happen is bring to the PC the same level of piracy control found on consoles.
I'm with you mate. It has to happen.
There is another way. Stop releasing games on the PC. No games, no piracy! No? Still enough money to be made on the PC platform? Then just stop worrying about things you cant stop or prevent. Stop worrying about things you dont even have a proof that they are damaging your sales.

He will go to space. He should go to space. Ultima was not only him, but a group of talented and hungry and hard working guys at Origin. There is no more Origin and its former employees have moved on. This chapter is closed!

Biggest disappointment in 5 years of PC-Gaming, imo. Its worse than S2, and thats saying something
Bugs aside ... its the same game over and over again. If you have a patched Stronghold 2, there is no need for Stronghold 3. Heck, S3 even looks the same than S2. Same textures, same models, same water shaders. And paying 40-50 bucks for a slightly modified interface?

*goes back, playing Stronghold 1*

The easy response to that is that some of the best games in history are text based.
THE best game in history isn't even digital.

And yes, isometric & turn-based is a no-go for games produced by major publishers, because isometric isn't 3D and turn-based is not fast enough for the shooter crowd. Sadly, the Syndicate IP belongs to EA and not some nifty little indie dev, who doesn't care what the biggest demographic target group seems to want or not want.

I remember playing a beta years ago.
That was under Flagship Studios. When Flagship went bancrupt, Hanbit from Korea took over all assets from Flagship and released Mythos as a typical Asian MMO grinder in their market.

And Hellgate London is suppossed to be re-released some time next year, also from Hanbit. Yay ... not!

Mythos still runs in Asia, but there is no loss here. Torchlight is the game you want to play if you knew Mythos from its humble beginnings.

There's a crack already?
Yes, but it only removes the necessity to be online when the gane starts. This crack does NOT restore the misssing content when playing offline.

But i guess, someone will eventually tackle that problem.

Homeworld 2 was a disappointment?
Is it necessary to mention, that it was a disappointment FOR ME? That i didnt say that HW2 has to be a disappointment for everyone else?

I simply have an allergy against dynamic leveling, using this feature to punish a player for playing well.

Given the rapidly increasing growth of F2P games ...
And how much of them will be online in two years? F2P isn't the Big Saviour in the risky video gaming industry. And more and more gamer realize, that they spend MORE money with "Free 2 Play, But Pay 2 Win games" that playing MMOs with a fixed fee. Because you cannot make decent money just from vanity items.

After Homeworld 2, I don't know that I want Relic to make a Homeworld 3.
True. Homeworld 2 was such a dissapointment. Especially this stupid dynamic-leveling crap which punishes the player, who played so well that he has a surplus of ressources and/or ships at the end of a mission. I never finished this game, never picked it up again in years following. But Homeworld 1 and the addon? Played every last bit of them a dozen times over and over and over.

Huh? ME2 was the weakest port they've done in a long time. They barely redesigned anything for the port, the text was huge and there was a lot of redundant clicking in the menus. They UI remained mostly unchanged from the console versions.
KotoR 1 & 2 anyone? Horrible, horrible inventory management and user interface, straight from the console without any improvements or adjustments to the possibilities of mouse/keyboard. Excellent games, but lazy ports they were.

I would hope not. I think the latest stalker game was the last recently released game I paid for but I will not be doing so for this one if they go the steam route.
Being released on Steam has some advantages for (nearly) everyone.

1. Steam as copy prevention sucks. Cracks are easily availabe on release day and for every major patch release.

2. The dev has a well established DRM system he can show his investors.

3. For some customers Steam adds value to a game.

4. Sales will reduce the buying price to a few dollars, if you are patient enough and have no interest in spending 40-50 bucks, dollars, euros, pounds whatever on a game you only rent.

Yes, no DRM at all is the best solution for the devs and the customers, but sadly not all devs go indie and the major publishers answer only to their investors, not to the customers or devs.
