Not to mention is does FUCK the people using triplehead. If you lock triple monitor users to 75...they're basically looking though a tiny slit in the gameworld.

I don't give a crap how they rationalize it, you can't use the same FOV over all aspect ratioes....it's doesn't work right.

We understand that not all users might not be happy with these choices and we will be looking into options for allowing users to adjust FOV settings manually. But as we mentioned earlier, changes to video game code do not happen in minutes or hours. We appreciate your understanding.

Dude cranked out a fix in less than a day....and he's not even a developer.

if you use the game as you normally do, you won't notice this at all.

That's a pretty fucking stupid. Raise your hand if you uninstall all of your software before doing a OS reinstall.....oh that's right no one does.

Here's the settings to use for various monitor sizes:

16:9 = 0.75 sliders. Effective FOV = 100 degrees
16:10 = 0.833 sliders. Effective FOV = 90 degrees
5:4 = 1.066 sliders. Effective FOV = 70.4 degrees
4:3 = 1.0 sliders. Effective FOV = 75 degrees

It works in all Vista versions and both the retail and the demo game, but you have to force DX9 mode, either by right clicking on it in the games explorer and selecting DX9, or adding -DX9 to the shortcut.

Edit: Fixed FOV settings, default is 75, not 90

27" widescreen here....I'm not going to be more accurate on a 27" 4:3 you retard. It's already taking up most of my view.

Just FYI...for me the weird mouse control was caused by those Bioshock specific nvidia drivers, when I uninstalled them and went back to the regular ones my mouse started moving normally.

for LCD tech, While ghosting is gone, you still get visible smear with LCDs on fast moving objects. It's not bad, but when you spin in a FPS for instance, everything become less clear. This doesn't bother me on the sub 10ms response screens but it does bother other people.

If you plan on running non native resolutions the more pixels the better. 1920x1200 is the sweet spot for that, everything supports 1600x1200 which is pixel perfect on a screen at that res. The problem is screens at that res can cost double the the next lower res. Still, they're worth saving up for. Plus if you do need to run some wonky lower res the extra pixels help smooth it out.

One of my favorite bonuses of widescreen, is the fact that the HUD in games is out of the way. Most of the time you have the same screen in the middle as the 4:3 and the HUG icons are out of the center of the view.

Dell 2707...yes overpriced but it's the best monitor I've owned, with by far the best stand I've ever used. Very smooth action.

That's not quite the right way to think about it...think of it this way. Look through a window, now, make the window one foot wider on each side. Do you see less top an bottom? No, you just see more on the sides.

A monitor is just a window into the game world and should respond as such.

In the demo I had to run it in DX9 mode, DX10 was acting all wonky. I couldn't alt-tab, the mouse highlighted stuff about 2 inches above and to the left of the cursor, and V-Sync wouldn't work.

In DX9 mode everything was great triple buffering was even in effect. With V-Sync the FPS, were steady between 30-60 usually in the 40's. This is with a 8800GTX and the beta drivers.

On the widescreen issue: The reason it's a big deal is it's something VERY simple to fix and yet add a lot to the enjoyment of playing a game.

I've always wondered about that. I have friends that insist that if you don't remove the all vestiges of the old drivers then you will lose some FPS. I've redone drivers both ways and it doesn't seem to make a difference.

It's nice to know that others don't, because going thru the uninstall process is annoying ...


I rarely uninstall first, too much of a hassle. I've compared FPS both ways a few times and never could find any difference.

To be honest the mouse+keyboard could use some updating. I could go for a gamepad like device to replace the keyboard. Something with a stick like a gamepads under your thumb for fine tuned movement would be awesome.

A lot like some of the crappy keyboard replacements out there, but with the good stick. Maybe even just a keyboard with the stick below the space key would work.

Dagok,

I know that Duke3d allowed you to look up and down with the mouse, but that was not necessary for aiming. You actually couldn't look up and down more than about 45 degrees from center, but you could still hit people directly above you because of the autoaiming.

Ray,

One quick thing about the Duke 3d vertical axis, the game autoaimed vertically for you. Which is why you sorry keyboard users could compete at all. No matter how high above you the person was, as long as you had the correct horizontal aim it would hit the person above you.

BTW, I'd have crushed your sorry keyboard using self in Duke, even with the lame vertical autoaiming.

I noticed almost immediately the low res textures on everything, it's something I tried to point out to the Gears fanboys to little effect. It the one thing that has always bothered me about consoles, the extreme lack of memory for textures. Most console games use a lot of blurring/post processing effects to shine over this problem.

If you ever compare the screenshots of the new Oblivion textures to the shit ones it shipped with, you can see how much they have to compromise for consoles. I doubt Bioshock ships with better textures for the PC.

It's not enough to seriously detract from my enjoyment of the game though.

Add to the list, truly high speed play. A lot of people say CoX is fast, but it's only quick in comparison to other MMORPGs. Granted the combat isn't as quick as a tactical shooter, but you can dispose of enemy groups very quickly, especially if you're a grenadier.
