"t's 512MB of video RAM, not regular RAM. AFAIK, there are not 512MB video card yet."
You only need 512mb for the highest setting and I think the only difference is that the textures are uncompressed- fixes some aliasing. My 256mb card works fine at the "very good" setting. I meant I have 1gb of system memory.

"Did you guys have it delivered to your house, or is it the torrent that you managed to get?"
It's all over the place now, the usenet and there are a few torrents. The game is amazing and I hope that the people that were planning on buying it still do even if they're able to download it. And that goes for every game, not just this one.
I have an athlon 2500+ overclocked to 2.33ghz, 6800gt, and 1gb of memory. The game runs perfectly at 1280x1024, very high quality and 4x antialiasing(haven't tried the higher settings yet). Those of you with older hardware should be fine.

Not sure what the performance problem I had was, but it runs great now that I updated the drivers. I have 1gb of ram so i'm good there. I can't believe how well this runs at 1280x1024 with antialiasing.

Performance Issues |

I'm having some performance issues with Doom3 ATM. Before ya'll freak out I have the damn game pre-ordered. Running on Very High Quality with my 6800GT, I get great frame rates in spots, but it stutters quite a bit, like it's trying to load too many textures. Using the 61.76s, getting the 61.77s now. So far the visuals look quite a bit better than far cry's.

I still think the best model for anti-piracy is stardock's (makers of galactic civilizations). They just keep supporting their games(bug fixes and added features) for years after they're released for those who purchased them. If you like the game, and you're a pirate, you'll eventually want to get the newest patches.
When calculating those torrent numbers you also have to realize that many people pirate games simply to have it- they may play it the night they get it, but that's about it. You can't consider that a lost sale.

I thought i'd jump into the nvidia v. ati flame war. I'm not loyal to either side, my last card was a 9700pro AIW and I just snagged the PNY6800GT (this thing overclocks like a beast!).
Anyway, I had to use the directX drivers in 3ds max cause the radeon's openGL performance was absolutely horrific. ATI's drivers, in general, were a huge disappointment- I ended up using the Omega drivers most of the time. Nvidia's Nview desktop tools are just amazing if you have multi monitors... ATI lacks in this area bigtime.
Nvidia on the software end is just leaps and bounds beyond ATI so even if ATI does have the better hardware it's a moot point if the drivers suck.

It's amazing... in the early to mid 90's I considered LucasArts and Origin to be, hands down, the best two PC gaming companies. Jump 10 years, origin is no more and lucasarts is a pathetic shell of what it used to be. Darkforces and Xwing were great and innovative, but everything they make today is just a remake of what someone else developed with a starwars theme. That bores me to no end.

November? |

November??? I think the german version came out in 2003. Is it that hard to get a competent distributer even after the Port Royal franchise has proven its worth? It didn't take Ascaron over a year to get Sacred published in North America.

MSJVM Removal |

What's the point of removing MS Java? I'm guessing it has something to do with the anti-trust case, but I would think it's just gonna break a bunch of things even if you have Suns's version installed. And it's not like the two don't coexist, I have opera and openoffice using the sun version.

"Jaysons parents didn't care? Hardly a problem with the game. Parents need to do their fucking jobs."
Don't be a retard. Products that are of poor taste shouldn't come to market. You don't see Porno Star Edition Barbie for a reason. Yeah, it's mostly the parent's problem but how the hell are all of them supposed to know that a game like GTA3, which happens to be advertised ALL OVER THE PLACE, is such a reprehensible game even with a mature rating(mature sounds like the WB network after 8pm)? It's like assuming everything the FDA approves is perfectly healthy- which is an unfortunate reality.
I never believed that games bring kids to emulate the violent stuff, that's more of a deep routed mental issue when that occurs...but I do think it makes a negative reflection of our culture which is something we're all subject to.

"And who the heck says that?? I've played through both games numerous times and not once did I find myself uttering anything remotely close to that."
Kids emulate what they hear and see. Things like professional wrestling are just as guilty as games like this. I've seen a handfull of kids under 10 play this game and, yeah, they tend to emulate the content. Even though they're doing it in jest, and they know better, it's not a good thing. Don't forget young kids look at these things very differently than grown-ups.
Kids that want to play this game will do so. I had to go over to my friend Jayson's to have access to all the crap my parent's wouldn't let me near. It's just a shame games like this actually make it to market.

Lieberman is a complete ass mostly because he jumps on these issues to gain sympathy votes, but that doesn't mean GTA3 isn't a despicable game. Yeah, it's fun as shit, but the game's themes are just morally reprehensible. Seriously, if you could actually imagine yourself as a responsible parent wouldn't you rather your 8 year old kid playing 'Yoshi's Super Adventure' than sitting in front of GTA3 yelling with his play mate "Man, I FUCKED that HO up, YO!"
