News Comments > BF2142 Beta Opens
30. Re: No subject Sep 8, 2006, 11:08 Jow

Uh, what? The Battlefield games have been some of the most difficult (in terms of technical problems, crashing, etc) and most frustrating (in terms of your teammates being asses, difficulty getting around maps due to needing vehicles, etc etc etc) gaming experiences I've ever had, and I've been gaming for a really long time. Don't even try to cop this shit that there have been no problems and the Battlefield series has been this wonderful fountain of paradise.

Ya know, there are plenty of people who legitimately don't like the game and it's not because they can't handle the heat. I've got over 400 hours into BF2 which would indicate that yeah, I have enjoyed the game, but I've never had more of a love/hate relationship with a game (well, the entire battlefield series really) in my life. There have been some amazingly cool moments, and there have been some moments, due to the game itself or some of the lame asses playing it, that I thought I was going to throw my PC out the window.

That's the biggest reason I'm not picking up 2142 - I just can't stand the "am I going to have fun this time?" crapshoot anymore.

More people than do the tennis players, most likely. Football is ridiculously popular in this country.

because there probably aren't even 10 tennis players the average person can name, much less recognize.

Battlefield 1942, while fun as hell, had some of the choppiest tech and netcode I've ever seen in a product. Somehow in Battlefield Vietnam this got much much worse, to the point that BF:V is still the only game I've thrown in the trash. BF2 came along and though the tech was significantly better, you can still see its oldschool BF1942 heritage in the hitscan/damage and general movement behaviors. The tech has improved, no doubt, but the core technology has persisted, and no matter how much people hope, BF2142 is going to share that same core code, and thus is going to have the same damn issues this franchise has had all along.

Don't get me wrong - I've put significant hours into all the Battlefield products, including 400+ hours into Battlefield 2, but every step of the way has been a love-hate relationship.

PC Gamer apparently gave this a 96%. Stand back, this is about to be the RTS of the decade, I suspect. Starcraft 2, should it ever arise, won't touch it. You read it here first.

As sad as it is, people are lining up for 2142 already like good little consumers. I just... don't... get it.

They used the term "highly anticipated" in both threads and I was amused just as much both times.

You notice how they keep trying to pound how buggy 2142 WON'T be compared to how BF2 is/was? Too little too late.

13. John Carmack Jul 16, 2006, 23:04 Jow

Honestly, I think Carmack's legacy will always be his technology work. Games... not so much. Most of the third-party developers that have based works on Id engines have made better games than Id themselves, imo.

Nice to see Danielle's name come up. I'd love to see what she could have done with the technology available today.

Can anyone who's tried this report whether or not they've fixed the crashes on joining games? This is driving my friends and I completely nuts.

some people just don't like the Diablo style of gameplay, myself included. To this day I think Diablo 1 and 2 were two of the most overrated titles in the history of gaming, but I also realize I'm in the minority.
