Ubisoft's last experiment with DRM free games was a miserable failure (the sales to BitTorrent piracy ratio was something silly, and that's before casual copying), which is what led to UPlay in the first place. That's a ridiculous point. While we don't know sales numbers, the idea that the sales-to-piracy numbers went up when they introduced UPlay is asinine. If anything, the piracy numbers went up, and the sales numbers down. That's the reason they are scaling back their efforts - because they obviously didn't work. So claiming that DRM free games were a "miserable failure" is absolutely incorrect. No, it's not a ridiculous point. I can't remember who wrote the article - maybe Eurogamer or RPS - but they combed through Ubisoft's financial reports and that's exactly what they found. There was every sign that without any DRM paying customers were switching to piracy, which isn't all that surprising. It's the tragedy of the commons in action - why should paying customers pay for anything if the pirates get the same thing for free at the exact same time?
As for whether sales-to-piracy numbers went up when UPlay was introduced, that's equally well-founded. Remember, it took months for UPlay to be correctly cracked, which means no one was able to pirate it. |

Jerykk wrote on Sep 5, 2012, 12:40: I wonder how long this will last. At one point, Ubisoft completely removed all DRM from their games (even rudimentary disc checks). I believe this applied to Prince of Persia, HAWX and EndWar. Then they went right back to online activations with limited installs and Uplay shortly thereafter. That's an excellent point. Ubisoft's last experiment with DRM free games was a miserable failure (the sales to BitTorrent piracy ratio was something silly, and that's before casual copying), which is what led to UPlay in the first place. It sounds like Ubisoft isn't getting rid of DRM entirely this time around, so hopefully they'll find a bit more success here than with either of the two extremes. |

| Seriously, how stupid do you have to be to think you're going to get away with collusion like that? It's a sport (e or otherwise); you're not getting paid to fake a contest. |

Well bugger, there goes Wipeout. There really isn't anything quite like it these days. If it wasn't for Wipeout I probably never would have picked up the Vita.

How long is this country (and the world for that matter) going to put up with these bullshit games China is playing?! If we kept getting caught with out virtual schlongs in the honey pot, so to speak, how long do you think they would put up with it before using it as an excuse to start a war, maybe with Taiwan? Yet we sit back and just zip our fly's back up and say, 'Oh you crazy Chinese! Always into something, eh?! Silly, at least use some lube next time, huh?' .... Slow down before you get too far ahead of yourself. It's well known that because of the additional requirements to operate a MMO in China, most MMO companies have completely different Chinese operations. Which is to say that the databases holding information about Chinese players would be held on an entirely different network in China. So if you wanted to take Chinese account info too, you'd have to break into their systems separately. |

I can't think of a single piece of software that I have installed that I think, "I'd rather have this on Steam!" Indeed. Not to knock Valve for trying it, but it's not attracting any real interest from me. |

I would love to be able to resell my digital games, but I'm under no delusion that it would be good for the industry as a whole. PC gaming is already teetering on the brink; something like this would push the remaining major developers towards MP-only games and/or server-side games like Diablo 3 (where in either case they can fully prevent you from reselling the game). It would be the end of SP as we know it. |

Slight correction: only Monkey Island was licensed by LucasArts. The rights to Sam & Max have always been owned by Steve Purcell, who had in turn given LucasArts a long-term exclusive license. That license expired in 2005, at which point Steve then licensed Sam & Max to Telltale. |

Well that's unfortunate. I know the FSX purists didn't care for it, but I thought it was fun and enjoyed it.
At this point does MS have any more PC-exclusive games in development? |

But whta in the world is being Open Sourced? It is still proprietary and it is wierd for people to say everything Linux is Open Sourced????? I would encourage cautious optimism. We've been here before back in the 1999-2001, and it didn't end so well for Loki Games. |

To be fair, Minecraft is classified as an online game as it technically requires you to try to log in to play SP. However if it can't login it'll let you play SP anyhow. So there's clearly a wide range for what "online" means.
Though I don't know what the Diablo comparisons are being thrown around. Diablo 3 is a server-side MMO, right up to the dumb client. Consequently if this is like Minecraft (full client, 3rd party MP servers) then this would be nothing like Diablo. |
