Actually, in concept, I don't mind the Start Screen and App Store.

I just hate the Tile interface.

If they were going to copy apple, they just should have copied how OSX Lion integrates IOS gestures, features, and a App store (OSX Apps, not IOS Apps), instead of the fugly interface MS came up with and how they crammed it with the full desktop interface - which is extremely sloppy.

*edit* and I meant no kidding as in they need to bring on AC II.

III?

No, there needs to be a 2.

There was a 2... it failed... they shut it down.

But the reason it failed, as far as most AC 1 fans are concerned - including myself, was because 2 wasn't really a sequel... it was a completely different game with the name AC 2.

So, yes... they need to make a TRUE AC 2, but I'm not sure if that would be a success in this day and age. If they put a little GW2 mix in it (AC 1 with Modern Graphics Engine, and reward everyone for kills / let everyone revive, like GW2 )... they might have something that would be marketable... especially if Turbine comes out the gate with F2P, like GW2.

I wouldn't run Win8 even with a free 27" touchscreen. I can't stand Metro. I can't stand the new explorer (file manager) with the bland metro fonts / colors and ribbon, nor that theme being fairly constant throughout other desktop panels... and I;'ll never buy shit from the Microsoft Store.

Basically... the only way I'd run Windows 8 or higher would be with Windowblinds or Aston replacing the shell. Classic shell is a good option for free, but it doesn't fix explorer and the rest of the desktop panels.

I don't understand how anyone thinks those fugly tiles are good looking... whether it's on a phone, tablet or a touchscreen desktop to take advantage of the gestures... It's just way too fugly for me to handle and, IMO, an extreme step backwards from Win7 or IOS / Android (For Touch)

The apple fans I know personally are like that.

Well My IT co-workers (and we're a large Windows Enterprise shop... so we're talking lots o' nerds)... don't do that. They keep their Apple devices for several generations before replacing.

Who would have thought us nerds would be the opposite of fanboy consumers, when it comes to tech?

I guess we're just more realistic.

I'm generally happy with my iPad 3, and most of the complaints I have about it aren't fixed by the iPad 4, anyway.

Pretty much this, except I have no complaints that need to be fixed by an iPad 4.

Also... given that my iMac is 5 years old, and I'm only now beginning to think about replacing it... and probably won't for another year... I wouldn't say that I am such a fanboy that I rush out and buy the latest as soon as it is available.

I am getting iPhone 5's for the wife and myself... but again... we're talking about replacing 4 year old iPhone 3g models (The second phone made), and we're switching carriers... so LTE and the carrier switch prompted the upgrade more than a need for new Phones.

I guess I'm more irked that people think everyone that buys Apple products, runs out and buys every fricken new model as soon as it is available.

The Q2 engine was awesome for it's time and was used in a metric assload of games. Probably their biggest success in terms of engine licensing.

Actually I think more games were made with the Quake 3 engine than Quake 2, although I don't think "Quake 3 Arena", itself, did better than Quake 2.

Classic, and still relevant...

Apple, without Steve Jobs the company lost their way... no more innovation, their vision lost...

The comic is funny... I especially like the part with MS Clippy in the Account balance pane... nice touch.

As for Apple without Jobs... we'll see. They are still running on momentum. Rumor is that iphone 5 was the last product he had anything to do with the design. But looking at the new iMacs (and I'm almost ready to replace my 5 year old iMac)... I'd have to say they are staying on trend without Jobs. I'm not sure how far they can take the "thin" thing... you can only go so far before it's insignificant, or way too much of a hardware trade off.

As for the iPad mini... not sure if I'd want one, between my phone and normal size iPad. I mean, the phone already fits in one hand... and the purpose of a tablet is to have a much bigger screen than a phone. It's not exactly pocket sized for a guy, either. A woman with a purse... yes, the iPad Mini might be a great thing... but I just don't see a guy hauling one around like a phone... and if you are going to bother hauling something non-pocket sized around... you might as well go for the larger screen with a nice case.

Nice preview on TTH as usual. Sounds like they're taking a page from GW2 in everything. And it sure looks nice. That Dunmer lavafalls shot is impressive. It'll be interesting to see how they do Elsewyr and the Black Marsh in particular. Well, colour me interested.

Not quite.

The SI review talks about "a standard “Greed, Need, Pass” system is in place for enemy loot when grouped"... which means you probably have to compete for loot and kills like a typical MMO, and unlike GW2.

I can't go back to that shit. Ever.

Yes, I was being rude.

It was intended more as a dig at Romero's famous line than a dig at Brenda... but interpret it however you wish.

...so I could gleefully make a "who is whos bitch comment"...

...then again... maybe a $15 pledge would have been too much.

Since I didn't really like the first one, as I have stated before, I can't get real excited about this one. However, I will wait until post launch and see what everyone is saying (forums / reviews) before I'd dismiss it altogether.

Ken will be working on at the Lord of the Rings Online developer, other than word that: "He will be responsible for all aspects of game design from vision to implementation."

How does one "design" a game that has already been out for a long time?

Yeah... new expansions and stuff... but you can't design the core gameplay, because it's already established. Grats on him getting a new job, but he shouldn't have left Bethesda to begin with.

Addicted? Couldn't stop himself? Ever the cry of those wanting to duck taking responsibility for themselves. It's not always easy to say no to your desires, but sometimes you have to in order to know you're truly free.

Yup. I love the empty apologies too. You're not sorry you did it, you're just sorry you got caught. Have fun finding a job, moron.

I'm playing Bioshock 1 again after quite a while being away from it and I must say I'm enjoying it a lot more than I remember the first time I played it. I find myself appreciating the things that make it the spiritual successor to SS it claims to be. There are so many radically different ways you can solve a problem and within any level it's generally non-linear. I think the first time I played it I was disappointed by the whole console vibe but I guess I'm used to that in modern games now so it doesn't even bother me. I'm tempted to say I like it almost as much as SS2.

Hmm... I never got that feeling at all. I would have to guess that Dishonored would be closer to a System Shock successor than Bioshock... at least from my point of view regarding gameplay... even though both Bioshock and Dishonored don't have character stats to work with.

Technically... Deus Ex (the first one) was an evolution to System Shock, IMO, and the real "spiritual successor".

I enjoyed Bio for what it was (judging it on it's own, unconnected to the SS series). 2 was ok...I'd classify it as more of an expansion, and in that regard it was ok.

Standing on it's own merit... I guess I would classify it as a mediocre shooter... but I was expecting them to fulfill their claim of making a "spiritual successor to System Shock" and was extremely disappointed.

nin wrote on Oct 18, 2012, 11:00:
Did you try that patch a few weeks ago for SS2? Works great under Win7!

GW2 is taking all of my game time. I just hit 80 with my first character (Yes, I'm a casual player because I don't have a whole lot of time for games, even though I love them). Dishonored will probably be my next endeavor... so replaying SS2 will have to wait.

With all the departures, I doubt it.

Then again, this opinion is coming from someone that thought Bioshock 1 didn't even come close to being a "spiritual successor" to System Shock, and someone that didn't even bother with Bioshock 2.

Beamer wrote on Oct 12, 2012, 10:07:
I'm with you. Netflix would be what, $108 per year?
Not much, sure, but I instead watch any movie I plan to watch On-Demand from my cable company.

Given that I was only turning Netflix on once every 3 months or so, and that it never had any movies I wanted to see, and I no longer have time to sit through entire seasons of TV shows, it was averaging out to about $54 per movie. Maybe $36 or $27, but I was probably watching something "just because," not because I wanted to see it.

On-Demand is $5.99 per movie and I only use it when I want to see the movie.

Yeah... I guess I'm just the opposite.

Since I despise commercials, I absolutely refuse to PAY for commercials... I don't care about whether stuff is the most current... and I don't care if I see brand new (first season) shows, right away. So I'm 100% Netflix, with a Blu-Ray and DvD collection. I've been unplugged from broadcast TV since 2007 (When the first Roku Devices came out for Netflix), and haven't missed it one single bit. I use the web for news and some shows that I can't get on Netflix. My Bill went from $70 a month to $10 a month, and there are no commercials, and I watch when *I* want to watch... not on a broadcaster's schedule. If I want to see a game... I'll go hit a local sports bar and have a few beers with some co-workers, and stimulate the local economy a little.

Obviously that is not for everyone... but since I game and surf more than I watch TV... it is more than plenty for me, and the wife likes it that way too.
