News Comments > Star Citizen at $60M

Wow so what was the drama that caused them to get fired?

CJ_Parker wrote on Nov 6, 2014, 20:23:
On a semi-related note: A bunch of guys who were fired from CIG's Austin team have announced their new game at http://peezocker.com/ today.
The game's name is to be revealed at a later date but it's basically a Descent kind of game.

Here's a bullet point summary of that new game from their forums (sorry about the fucked up format but that's what copy&paste will do). Or if you want to watch the half hour stream yourself then go here: http://ustre.am/QLWp

  • He says the company is made up completely of ex-CIG employees so far, including Mike Morlan.

  • Jason Spangler, Elijah Mcneil and Chris Olivia are all part of the team. Wingman's Son is part of the team as well.

  • 300 Years into the future. Players take the role of Resource Agents, trying to get our hands on resources to make money.

  • Game-play and mechanics will be similar to the classic game Descent. 6 DOF. Fly around tight spaces and through tunnels.

  • 4-5 Ships to fly at launch. (Stealth Ships, repair/support ships, gun play, mining ships)

  • Several game modes. Create your own Corporation, play single player or multiplayer.

  • Burrow through the ground in order to find secrets and upgrade your ships.

  • Will be crowd-funded and community made. Looking for people to help make the game and be people like community managers. Not looking for money yet.

  • Still figuring out which engine to use. Looking at unreal 4, and leaning in that direction.

  • Looking to Ship the first version of the game withing ONE YEAR. Company started just two days ago. Already have a ship flying around on screen.

  • Have a hangar or garage, such as World of Tanks, to upgrade weapons and engines and other parts. More arcade like and less hardcore of a flight model.

  • Have a name in mind for company, but are looking for ideas from the community.

  • New show like Wingman's Hangar will be coming out for this game. Called something like Wingman's Basement.

  • Mod tools will be available as soon as game is released

  • Will sell map-packs after game is released.

  • Looking to make a companion App for the game as well, which would allow you to map out areas and find things.

  • Voxel-based mining system

  • Track-IR and Oculus rift will be supported

  • Looking at have 60 people or so playing at once in a game.

  • Regarding Star Citizen
Still a huge supporter, and will continue to Support Chris Roberts and his vision.

  • No truth to any of the rumors on the forums. He is happy to be his own boss again, and fully supports Chris's decision to do whatever he needs to do to make his vision happen.

  • Happy to have helped form CIG, and will continue to support Star Citizen in the future

  • Would not be surprised if on his new show to have segments about Star Citizen, as he still cares about its future.

MP is still a HUGE MESS. With a gazillion mods and server mods and versions XXX.XXXX its nearly impossible to find a decent game. Too bad.

Played with the new flight model today, I find it greatly improved.

Blues seems to be the place to rag on SC and praise ED. I have both, I play both all the time. ED is good, but it's not THAT good, guys. It still has a huge lack of variety in things to do. The cargo hauling missions get tired pretty quick and it's flight model isn't that great. Yaw and Pitch speeds are frustratingly slow. An opponent with better manoeuvrability will make a fool out of you. I know there's youtube vids of pro's showing you how it's done, but if you're not pro, then combat in ED can be a painful exercise. You end up screaming at your sidewinder to turn faster god dammit!

Personally I prefer the dogfighting in SC. I like the potential of fps stuff, if only to give the option of having some more stuff to do. Cause I am tired of hauling fish.

Uh maybe because Braden has actually delivered and all we see from Roberts are commercials and talk?

Braden is far from delivering. ED is impressive in it's procedurally generated scale, but not so much in all the rest. Having 400 billion stars to go to means squat when you can only do 5 or 6 things in some of them and 0 things in many others. And they're still sticking to a 2014 release date. I'd rather they take another year and add more content. Because the game as it loses it's zeal pretty quick.

On the forums someone asked "what can we do in this game" given that it has no storyline and the common answer was to use your imagination and make up your own story as you're delivering fish and claiming the odd bounty. So if you're good with that, then this is your game. But it's hardly the next coming of PC space sims.

The injected story stuff will be neat, if they can deliver on it. But we haven't seen a working implementation yet and with only 2 months to go it probably will be out on an expansion later next year.

I have hopes for ED, but I've found a lot of people are using it as a symbol for everything that SC isn't and that's completely untrue. Play ED for a couple hours and see if you still have the same amount of enthusiasm as you do now. It's just not close to done yet.

How did you get it to do that? Or what flight mode needs enabled. Off the bat mine just kinda veers left or right in a weird arc. Def not like that

Sure. Except he promised FPS during Kickstarter.

Also the Alien in this game has the reverse animal legs, whereas in the 1st movie it was humanistic so that adds to the weird walk animation style

The Half Elf wrote on Oct 21, 2014, 15:22:
I'm not sure why but still my biggest reason for not getting this game (besides money) is that the Alien is walking. Now I know it's been awhile since I last saw Alien, but it just seems so unnatural especially of the game videos I have seen.

No one has crystallized this better than you. As a game dev myself I see doom written all over this unrealistic space opera.

    Loopy wrote on Oct 8, 2014, 12:21:
I must misunderstand project planning and management or they've really gone of the rails. I don't get how more stretch goals are realistic or reasonable.

As you can see, the stretch goal is a ship vote and the winner gets moved near the top of the production pipeline. As you can also see, they have really come up with very "creative" ship roles just to increase the number of possible votes and ships.

All of this has just one purpose, of course: To be able to offer up many more ships sales in "you guys asked for it" fashion.
Every ship sale adds at worst a few 100K or, if it is a "limited" and/or LTI ship, often times $2+ million to the counter.
People at the forums are begging on their knees for more sales and for more info when a sale might happen so they can start saving up for it.

Of course all of this has nothing to do with being "realistic" but from a management and marketing perspective it is certainly highly "reasonable" to milk the suckers as long and as often as possible.

As for realism, CIG is nuts. Look at the ship roles. Except for the announced plain old regular combat (PvE and PvP dogfighting), boarding, capital ship gameplay, smuggling, salvaging, exploration/charting, trading, racing and bounty-hunting which all by themselves are already insanely complex systems, CIG also needs to design gameplay systems for search & rescue, passenger transportation, space "live" repairs, minelaying, minesweeping, and recon.

We're talking decades of design and implementation work here to really flesh out these systems to any level of fidelity that would warrant the "BDSSE" (best damn space sim ever) title.
IMHO it is microwave length short-sighted by CIG to just cough up these ship roles only to have moar sales when any of these ships and the underlying gameplay systems are MANY YEARS away from completion.
It's also setting completely unrealistic expectations. People at the forums are having wild fantasies about every single ship role that just will not realistically be implemented in the next ten years - if ever.

And that's why this game is doomed to fail. CIG will never be able to create all these gameplay systems to a level that it's fun for everyone. It's way too big and way too much work to even keep a fraction of people happy. Look at other MMOs where it always takes ages before important issues are addressed or before any new meaningful content is added. Star Citizen will never be able to keep up with people's demands for fleshed out gameplay systems and new content. Just balancing all of the many ships against each other and giving each one a meaningful role is going to be an epic task.
One day people will realize that CIG bit off chunks more than they can chew thanks to their megalomaniac CEO and then: mass exodus, game over.
