A good pirate MOG would rock. Unfortunately it's Disney so it's going to suck. The game will be nothing but a big commercial merchandising POS that they expect you to pay a monthly fee for. No thanks.
Did you ever try Toontown? It's a very solid game and doesn't at all come across as advertising or brand promotion. Though it's not meant to hold the attention of adults, I recommend anyone curious about the game give the free trial a go. It's at least fun to put together your own toon. (I'd still like to meet whoever was behind the yellow cat in the blue track suit named "Sir Romeo Trickyfingers".)
You can read about and install the game at Toontown.com. It requires Internet Explorer for the install, and likewise Windows.

Whoever it was who said this:
That's total crap. I work in retail and we've had our copies of HL2 in our security room for about 3 days now. Don't say it isn't released when it really is. If you wanna just say, "We can't activate it right now because the street date is Nov. 16th," then fine.
Having a job with a nametag doesn't mean you know the industry, obviously. Release dates are used for the distribution of music, movies, and video games for several reasons. One reason is, of course, to coincide with the machinations of marketing departments. But it also maintains a level playing field for all of those various retail vendors who expect to sell the product when it's fresh on the street.
It would be easy and understandable for one retail company, for example GameStop, to sue Vivendi if EB (as a company, not a few isolated franchise stores) broke the street date and Vivendi did not act on it.
There's also the fact that having a street date let's everyone in consumerland know when, in fact, we can expect to find the product on shelves. I'm sure as a retail employee you don't want to answer calls of "Is Mega-Action Bombface 4 in yet?!" weeks in advance of the game's arrival.
Also, you're apparently confused as to what a release date is. Just because many companies end up shipping the product to stores just in time for the release date doesn't mean that the release date is whenever the product arrives.
*edit* ...that's some bizarre markup This comment was edited on Nov 13, 21:48. |

"CoH has no rewards that aren't tied to leveling up."
You're missing the point. Climbing the level ladder is just a natural byproduct of playing the game. The main "reward" is... steady now... playing the game.
I have thoroughly enjoyed playing City of Heroes for about a month. I can login, meet up with some people, beat up on some bad guys, see a few more entertaining costumes, and leave without having made it to the next level and that's fine. It's fun to get a new power or the ability to improve on an existing power's aspects, but if that doesn't happen, I've had a great time anyway so I don't care.
I've played a smattering of other MMOGs in the past couple of years and they were all interesting in some way or another, but only Toontown has come close to being so purely focused on the player having fun whether or not advancement occurs in a given play session.
If you (and I mean the general "you") are so hung up on whether leveling is a critical part of the gameplay, maybe you should look into a different kind of game altogether. Or, as ever, feel free to roll your own.
