News Comments > Maxis: Spore Doesn't Need Demo, Does Need DRM
45. Re: No demo? Aug 16, 2008, 06:27 Lokust

The irony is that I'm more inclined to pirate a DRM-infested game that limits my legitimate usage. Why spend real money on something with effectively more limited features than what the inevitable pirate release will have? I'm not saying I'm going to pirate Spore (I'm not really sure what the point of it is). Just saying that stuff like this is a move in the wrong direction. See Stardock for the right direction.

I didn't think it was possible to make firing a staff weapon look so boring. :/ Seriously, what basic human villager in the stargate universe takes like 7-8 staff blasts to bring down. It just feels ... off ... to me. The action seems way too slow for the setting.

....which is pretty much what he has to say when he works for a company who's name is synonymous with buggy, unfinished software, if he wants someone to ever take a chance on one of their games again...

News Comments > BF2142 Beta Patch
10. Re: No subject May 8, 2008, 09:56 Lokust

Yeah, it's not affecting everyone. I can play on my xp partition but my vista gives a CTD when I run it, citing the CD is not in the drive. I get the same message if I try using a no-cd crack, ironically. Most users are apparently OK on vista but the issue isn't completely uncommon either.

20mb dsl isn't exactly new. The CLEC I was working for three years ago was doing dsl up to 20mb. Of course the fine print is that it's unlikely anyone further than a mile from the CO will be able to acheive such speeds.

The buzz about this game is interesting, but I don't think I can try another funcom MMO right at launch after AO. I'll wait for the post launch fallout to see how things go.

Re: Considering the amount of "skill" and "talent" required in an MMO to attack things is "place cursor on what you want to attack", "click", "wait until one of you dies" ... who cares?

Gee, couldn't you ultimately say the same thing about a first person shooter or a real time strategy game? Seriously, it's time to get off the high horse of ignorance.

After being a guitar hero and rock band player for several years now I've been looking at taking the next step and getting a real guitar. After this, I can say that whatever guitar I buy won't be a gibson.

News Comments > THQ Director Blames Piracy for Iron Lore Closure
64. Re: This was almost believeable... Mar 4, 2008, 07:27 Lokust

No Bhruic, he was using that as an example of having to deal with a myriad of wacky hardware issues that you don't run into on the PC, while having users bitch that things couldn't possibly be their own fault. FWIW Fitch raises a lot of valid points, as should be obvious by the number of game devs that agree with him in the thread.

News Comments > GeForce 8 Series to get PhysX
51. seems like the wrong direction Feb 14, 2008, 18:04 Lokust

With the market growth of multi-core CPU's, it makes a lot more sense to me to code games to shift all physics processing to a CPU core than it does to shift them to a GPU core. When I look at doing system upgrades I'm way more likely to consider a quad core vs a dual core in that light, then I would be to consider adding a second high end video card to do physics processing.

As opposed to what, including GameSpy player matching, therefore killing off the PC multiplayer component before it's even finished? The Windows Live matching for Gears of War PC never gave me any trouble.

Yeah, I definitely recommend a front page post about the patch potentially deleting the boot.ini file, as a public service announcement/warning if anything else.
