Of course I realise it, that was precisely my point
Valve's games are now so designed, all the "flukes" have gone.

I know what you mean about the "no buildings destroyed" achievement. I have no idea how anyone could have accomplished that. I'm surprised it's the 3rd least-awarded achievement, and not the 1st. While I agree it's almost impossible to complete without at least the Sawmill going up in smoke, the other two achievements are far harder / more tedious. Squishing every bug in Ep2 would take a very, very long time in the least fun (or most boring, if you're Enahs ;P) part of the game. I'm not sure how many there are, but there are some pretty inaccessible ones.
As for the gnome one: http://www.kfj.f2s.com/index.php/2007-10-15-gnome-quest sums it up.
I liked Ep2 a lot. But then I enjoy the Source engine's environments, and I think Valve employ the best level designers in the business. I like the 'extras' such as achievements.
I played through Ep2 twice, the second time with commentary. Playing with commentary is interesting, because you realise just how designed the HL games have become. Everything is put there to be fun, everything is there to add something to the game, anything that confused playtesters has been taken out, there are very, very few rough edges.
But here's the rub - the better Valve get at utilising the Source technology, the more they use Steam's data collation to find out where we die, which weapons we like, what we find difficult, and feeding this stuff into their products, the more I feel like I'm playing a game. The more I feel the "fun" is designed. It feels like 'organised fun' - like an office christmas party. Yes, there's drinks and drunken ladies, but someone has said "let's have an office party and make it FUN" and from that point on, it's never going to be that great.
All the truly great games are that way because we, the players, contribute to what makes the gameplay fun. It's the skiing in Tribes, the rocket jumping in Quake, playing CS:S and restricting yourself to an uzi. It's giving the player the freedom to invent new strategies / moves / tricks / comedy moments, and I really feel that Ep2, in its quest to be perfect, felt too designed - it was all about what Valve thought we would find fun. And although they are there 80% of the time (for me, less for others, I admit), they don't let me make up the extra 20%.
That's just my 2 cents.

Er you know you can get both of those on Steam right? What are the savings in store?
Edit - yes, I answered my own question. Ignore me, it's been a Looooong week

Is there any particular reason for not releasing this interview until Friday? Or is it just to get double traffic - once for the 'preview' and again for the real thing?

Hell, I have never even had Duck Really? I know you're all strawberries and no snickers, but duck isn't that bad for you! Cooked properly (and it's considerably harder to buy good duck and cook it properly than, say, a chicken) a good duck is absolutely fantastic.

For now I'd say stick with PC/Console titles or Console titles that PC gamers are jealous about, I doubt people want to hear about Virtual Fighter 5 or Pokemon... Couldn't put it better myself. Obviously games like GTA:IV which are console games but likely to be ported over at some point (quite apart from the fact that they're big games in their own right) should make it on to the site.

Portal came out and it is fucking awesome. Really? Just downloaded the Orange Box this weekend - played through Ep2 already (really enjoyed it) and was going to have a look at Portal too - looking forward to it now!

There are better routes than the current - there always is. Yep but breaking contracts is never a good idea.

Damn, WTH do you have dinner at??? In London a dinner at a middle of the road place can easily reach £30 each. And when you add the girlfriend...
Edit: before Enahs says anything, I mean paying for the girlfriend's food. I do not pay for the 'girlfriend' This comment was edited on Aug 8, 03:33. |

I was just thinking last night night that I could go for some RoTT...and as I have no idea where my cd is... I got Terminal Velocity with my very first PC, a Gateway back in 1995/6 or thereabouts. Played it to death with my Flightstick Pro. And Duke Nukem 3D... I know I can find it Warezed somewhere, but I'd pay $35 to play their entire back catalogue.
Has anyone created a BluesNews community group on Steam yet? I tried to find one, thinking it would be fun to get some of us together for a HL2DM etc (and even more so when TF2 comes out).

How long before Duke Nukem and the entire 3D Realms back catalogue comes to Steam? Hopefully not long.

Well I just paid my $63 for the full catalogue. Having lost my RtCW, Hexen II and Quake cds long ago, I'm happy to get an everlasting replacement and hours of fun for less than the cost of dinner.

Oh well, I assume that some smart haxx0r will just remove them. Bingo. There'll be patches etc. doing just that.
I guess this allows companies to make money even from the pirates.
