What the fuck are you smoking? Your basic infantry has the ability to destroy the biggest tanks in the game if you equip them with RPGS and flank. You clearly did not play this game well enough. I had forgotten about the upgrading, that and the resource points were strategic elements. But my point was that the gameplay was highly tactical as opposed to strategic. Its scale and design (rightly) prevented it from being so. It was, as you say, about flanking and pinning units down. It was about manually throwing grenades. It was about taking a village one house at a time, according to whether it contained a sniper or a Panzerschrek unit. Those are tactical decisions rather than strategic, in my view.
Intelligence about the enemy was pretty irrelevant in multiplayer CoH - each side played to their strengths rather than identifying and countering the specific threat (with the possible exception of entrenched units as above). Fights were between a tank and a unit of troops (or another tank). The landscape rarely provided any sort of gameplay opportunities, in terms of funelling players through chokepoints, capturing high ground, etc.
Don't get me wrong, I loved CoH. It was excellent and the best tactical RTS I've played in a very long time. But it's in the C&C:G mold rather than the TA mold.

Ep 2, 40 bucks for 5-6 hours plus 2 added games that have nothing to do with the original. Pedantic point, but I seem to remember that Valve have said Ep2 is longer than Ep1 - about 2/3 of the length of the HL2. I can't find the link anywhere. Of course, some of this will be vehicle based so may be much the same in time terms.
To be honest, I'm in the first camp - looking forward to all three. Would I pay $40 for Ep2 alone? Nope, I'd wait for retail. But $40 for the lot? Sure, why not.

(I think) what Creston's saying is that those who only want to carry on the HL saga are forced to buy TF2 and Portal. And that's bad. Especially since given the Steam system there's no real reason why they can't be split up.
Of course, if they were, they'd cost more than $39.99 / 3 and everyone would complain about that too.

Looks like we were right and Ep2 is going to be almost a full price game. Not that (IMO) it's bad value - I still play through HL2 regularly and have played Ep1 several times, well worth my $20.

Im guessing others might be too, which is a shame as the smaller threads with only one or two comments usually having something interesting to say on some obscure gaming thing. My favourites are the two post ones, the first is programming related, the second is from Zathrus and begins "sigh..."

Does anyone else find the most annoying thing about Tweakfuck is that there are now loads of 1 comment threads. As I tend to open every thread in firefox tabs and then browse through them, this is quite tedious. I don't want to sound like Im telling Blue how to run his site, but surely it's possible to ban people on this BBS? IIRC Fredrickson was banned a while back.

Yes. Why wouldn't I? Because you think I've got to choose "either-or?" In reality, I'll purchase both. I may like them both, I may hate them both. But your assertion that iD's marketing hype means I've got to forfeit interest in anything else is downright silly. QFT.

As I read it, the only people who can support and benefit from the episodic / digital distribution system is people who already have big IPs. Valve can do it, id could do it and a handful of others. But the startup developers (which is who Valve sold the Steam concept to originally) aren't going to be able to use it.
And that'll continue, especially given publishing through Valve costs as much as a traditional publisher.

The trick with Dell is to use email support. It's useless, but it takes no more than 5 minutes to write an email and costs $zero. If you're blunt enough (and I have written sentences like "please do not tell me to download some program and check for spyware, the problem is a broken harddrive. I know this because it makes a funny noise and the computer doesn't turn on. So please do not tell me to click anywhere, XP doesn't start") then they're usually quite good.

I hope all these fucking DRM schemes are the death of the traditional media distribution firms. They can keep high definition until someone works out a way to let me watch it without assuming I'm a criminal.

like 5 hours for the single player, you can beat it in a day easy Most people don't spend five hours a day playing video games.
