crack WPA w/Pre Shared Key if the wireless owner uses a weak password. You'd have to use a really weak password though. Like 64 A's or something equally silly.
Pick a random phrase from a book, or (better) use a random generator to create the key and it'll never be cracked, barring some unforseen weakness in the algorithm.
And I agree with what nin said in general (and I said it here long ago) -- my only point was that WEP is sufficient for that. The extra steps are unnecessary.
Me, I'm paranoid. Full WPA encryption with a completely random key (upper/lower/numeric/non-alphanumeric). My SSID is visible, but only because WDS doesn't deal well with hidden SSIDs.
And trust me, typing in a 64-character random key into the Wii is a complete pain in the ass. And we did it three times before figuring out it just wasn't going to work (the Wii doesn't play nicely with WDS).

My own wi-fi is not only secured with a 13 letter password, but has the signal masked and my MAC Adress filtering is on and limited to only three devices: My PSP, my DS, and my Wii. Why bother? The WEP password is sufficient to keep out the casual surfer. The remaining methods are insufficient to keep out anyone who actually wants on your network. The only way to do that is to use WPA or WPA2.
who is running the Library network and taking care of the machines? Usually either a librarian or someone in the library-system IT staff. Both of which are underfunded and underpaid (and yeah, the IT staff in such a situation is usually full of clueless idiots; there may be someone there with a clue, but they're so overwhelmed they can't possibly do it all).

Fifteen? Hell, I saw an entire floor display of them at Fry's on Saturday. Probably 30-40. And there were probably more in the console game area.
Not a single Wii though. Or they were hiding them.

Lol like that is Dells responsibility. Uh, how isn't it? Dell selects the components to put in their laptops. They can either choose components that have drives or pressure their suppliers to provide drivers (or, now, just provide the docs to the kernel devs, who will write the drivers for them).
Linux has a way to go before its a true "desktop" replacement for Mom and Dad or even the average business user. I'll agree here. But not entirely for the reasons you give -- the big issues are drivers in particular areas and the attitude of devs toward regular users.
It needs to become commercial which is everything anti linux. It needs so much driver support built in which is another anti linux issue. What on earth are you talking about? Linux is commercially supported by Red Hat, Oracle, IBM, Novell, and numerous other companies, large and small. Most of the kernel development is commercially sponsored.
As for drivers -- there are more drivers "built in" to most Linux distros then there are in any version of Windows. How long did it take for MB vendors to make it so you didn't have to jump through hoops to install XP on a SATA drive? For Linux it was well under a month. Have old hardware? It's supported, and is unlikely to ever be de-supported.
There are problem areas, and it's not clear when (or if ever) they'll be resolved due to legal issues -- Wireless can be a pain if you're not careful. Ditto 3D graphics. There are solutions for both areas, but they're not perfect by a long shot, and as you note, they're not "out of the box" for users.
Open source is great, but open source does not make for a great business model. Again, there are a rather large number of companies out there that disagree, in whole or in part, with you.

Mouse over each picture Heh, virtually no difference -- the changes in color and brightness are almost certainly due to different settings for inputs on the TV.
In any case, if you plan to buy them, search first -- you can get them for $10-15 IIRC.

The step-parent that wrote in? Yes, it was linked to in IttB last night.
She must be the youngin' step mom and the dad must be older by some years. I'd think so -- a random guess would be that the dad "traded in" for a younger model, but we certainly don't have enough info to say for sure. I do hope that Gabe made damn sure she is who she says she is though. (And it's rather unclear -- the kid who claimed it was "like a video game" was 17 at the time, while she claimed to be the step-girlfriend to the then 15 year old)
I don't care who you are, you can send a kid away. Agreed, although I think it's safe to say that we're not getting a completely truthful picture here. Why wasn't the kid arrested for any of the other crimes? Why didn't they send the kid to boot camp or similar?
All of that said, if the kid is smart and sociopathic, there's not a helluva lot you can do but hope he's locked away before he does too much harm. A smart sociopath can fool most psychiatrists into thinking they're "normal".

EB Games RULES Ok, see, now we already know you're delusional.
But damn, now I can't find any controllers! Was there something on here about Wii Play being in stock somewhere? It's in stock in many places, just call around. Don't forget Toys'R'Us if there's one nearby. And there's always Amazon, et. al.
Also consider the official Nintendo store... I ordered the LAN adapter ($5 cheaper than anyone else) and a nunchuck, paid for 2 day shipping (only $2 more than ground), and received it exactly two days later. Even though the site claimed up to 2 days processing before shipping and that some orders might be delayed due to demand.

For better or worse, humans, just as any other animal, are programmed to reproduce for the purpose of prolonging viability of the species. It's the equivalent of a peacock showing off its tailfeathers (no pun intended in any way!), or any other animal showing off its greatest assets (color/shape/sounds/material possessions) in order to attract a mate. And if you want to go down that path, then consider that humans are one of the few (only?) species in which the female of the species primps far more than the male. In most species the females are relatively colorless; they're the ones that pick the mates (and, statistically, it should be true for humans too since there are more males than females until you get well past the age of reproductivity).
Whether it's right or wrong is for another discussion entirely... But that's the discussion that the article is about... and, in particular, if the body image being promoted is actively harmful.

Even if you keep the exact same motherboard? (ie, same manufacturer, type, etc) Depends. I've heard 3rd hand (friend-of-a-friend) of cases where that was required, but I've also heard 2nd hand (coworker) of cases where a drop-in replacement of the same board, etc worked fine.
Does it actually force you to reinstall, or does it just become unstable? If it's a completely different MB then it won't boot. The kernel won't have the right drivers available, and AFAIK Windows doesn't do a full hardware probe at boot time like many versions of Linux do. Or if it does boot the word "unstable" doesn't even start to describe it.
In theory you can use the recovery mode off the install disk to repair the install and get things working properly without a full reinstall. I've tried that twice and had exceptionally bad results though.

Re: basements |
Feb 19, 2007, 13:21 |
Zathrus |

I think basements aren't feasible in some regions due to the water table and soil composition (clay, sand, and other soil types that can lead to an unstable foundation). Clay isn't an issue for basements -- if anything, it's better than many other kinds of soil. (Georgia has pretty much nothing but clay for soil, and there are basements a plenty here).
Areas with a high water table (like Florida and Louisianna) are problems though -- dig a hole, watch water start coming in. It makes it nearly impossible to have one.
In cold climates you pretty much have to have some kind of sub-grade structure because the foundation has to be below the frost line. Whether that's a crawl space or a basement is pretty much up to the builder/buyer.
Since California isn't a very cold climate (excepting some parts of Northern CA), they probably don't have many basements.

We put the AC on the lawn and the heater in the basement here in MN. Er, if you have a forced air HVAC system then your heater and AC are a combined unit -- the condenser coils are inside in your furnace and use the furnace fan to circulate the air in the house.
If it's a heat pump system (unlikely up there) then it's a bit more complex than that, since the condenser coils get used during the heating cycle as well.
In any case -- I've usually seen the furnace/fan/condenser on the lowest level of the house, unless there's multiple systems. Then the upper level is in the attic.
Tank water heaters are almost always put on the lowest level possible for bursting reasons.
We actually have 3 systems in our house (upstairs, main level, basement). The upstairs is in the attic, the other two are wedged in the basement. The water heater is, strangely, in the garage behind a door. Dunno why -- I wouldn't have put it there, since when it fails it'll probably end up causing the little bit of flooring its on to fail and the entire thing will crash down into the basement. Yeah... I'm excited about that.

If he eats pork, is it cannibalism now? Only if it's pork tips...
(Note that the article says that there are no pig cells in the powder)
Faster growing nails? Better resistance to cold weather? I'd settle for slower growing nails... and the cold weather thing could just be because it's a new bunch of cells; but it also sounds like you may have reduced sensitivity (more calloused/tougher skin).
Wonder if his finger prints changed...
Oh, and I hope your son had a good birthday Warhawk! Thanks for the birthday wishes to ours, she had a great one (and got a ton of gifts even though we're not having the "real" party until March 3).
Also, I envy your attic... looks huge, and pre-decked. I spent several hours a few weekends ago just putting up 72 sq ft of decking.

You might want to try Toys'R'Us as well; it seems that in some areas the massive sales rush is finally over -- I bought it last Sunday at a local Circuit City several hours after open and they had 5 left.
When I was calling around to find Wii Play on Wed/Thur several TRU's said they had Wii's, just no Wii Play (found one Thur that did).
Of course, you're close to a college town, so demand there may be higher...

She goes up and down unprepared and lives? Wow. Yeah, it's pretty amazing. There's a couple differences though, namely that she's not climbing with a pack, but was unconscious in a seat. It's also unclear how long she was up there (or how long the guy who didn't make it was).
Oh, and Blue didn't post the utterly absurd (yet true) other paragliding link I sent, about another paraglider being attacked by wild eagles. Yes. Stop laughing. Read, then laugh: http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070202/od_nm/australia_eagles_dc

MrGrossor -- need your Wii #! You said you were going to add ours, but never posted yours.
Picked up Wii Play and Super Monkey Ball Blitz yesterday. Wii Play is better than I was expecting (only played a single round of each game though). Haven't cracked open SMBB yet, but if it sucks then I am going to blame Enahs entirely.
Thinking I'll return Zelda -- I'd like to play it eventually, but not much time right now and enjoying Sports/Play for now.

The Government doesn't decide case law. I would sue this shit out of the airline, control tower, etc. A court would easily side with the passenger.
No they wouldn't, because the case law here says you have no rights, because the case law is based on the FAA guidelines that say -- you've got it -- you have no rights once you board that plane.
This is hardly the first stupidly long tarmac delay in history, and the airlines have been sued before -- to be shut down because their are no regulations on the books that set down guidelines. Instead the laws on the books say that you've got jack squat for recourse once you leave the environs of the airport and board the plane.
You might be able to make a case for the airline not meeting their conditions of carriage, but that's questionable at best (and, I'm sorry, comparing being stuck on a plane for 10 hours to the Hanoi Hilton is absurd). And JetBlue is likely to do their best to recompense the passengers in question (comp the tickets, offer future flights, etc) which would make a court settlement less likely to be favorable to the passenger.
Yes, it sucks... as do virtually all of the airline policies. The time for an airline passenger bill of rights is long past due, because the industry is clearly not going to do the right thing themselves.
