Heck no, it's very peaceful and quiet here. Barking dogs are obnoxious, same with neighbors who play loud stereos.
Just say NO to noise pollution. =)

Where I live, if a barking dog is complained about 3 times, the owner loses his dog forever. A great law!

It's too bad FourPak's post will just fade into another page of this long thread. His advice goes far beyond what any petition will do. In fact, petition's just make people lazy and actually help the corporation, they can have one suppository of complaints to simply 'ignore'.
The pro-active advice he mentions does work, I've been there to see this actually happen in corporations.
I think you should write this like an article, FourPak, and use it as an linked signature in all your posts. What you said is what is needed in all situations where gamers are unhappy with a publishers/developers activities. Again, complaints in BluesNews or petitions only help the corporation avoid the problem. When they start getting actual phone calls - that cost time, money, and resources, then the corporation starts to listen and worry.

If HL 2 is bundled with ATI, the whole thing screams of sell-out. Amazing people buy into this BS. The whole thing is a scam. Wake up people!

Chunk, are you saying that you worked on the original Quake 1 TeamFortress? If so that would mean I have to get on my knees in a worship position. Best mod for any game ever. =)

Well, the fact is that HL is Quake 1.5 engine.
Also, Team Fortress Classic - it's really just a copy of Quakeworld TF.
"The first version of Team Fortress, an add-on for Quake, was released on August 24, 1996. It was originally written because the authors wanted a first-person perspective, team strategy game for LAN competitions. Version 1 .0 only included the Scout, Sniper, Soldier, Demolitions Man and Medic classes and did not support any map entities."
http://www.planetfortress.com/tf/gameinfo/about.shtml
In fact, all these recent team/role based games of late (TFC, RTCW, ET, BF:1942, etc.) are just rip-off's of QuakeWorld TeamFortress.
Quake 1, 2, and 3, have always had and still have tons of free mods, so that's not a good argument, and PB is a more effective anti-cheat.
So Steam or not, the fact remains:
ID Software > Valve
Activision > Sierra
Umm, edit. =)

The more I read this thread the more I respect ID Software and Activision. They treat gamers right. Quake 3 is still supported, and Enemy Territory is free. Call Of Duty looks amazing, and will get that wholesome ID / Activision support.
ID Software / Activision > Valve / Sierra

PunkBuster works wonderfully for SOF 2, RTCW, ET, Quake 3, AA, and Raven Shield. Valve made a huge mistake not integrating PB into HL.

Your real concerns should be the following:
1. Lack of a dedicated linux server.
2. Lack of decent remote administration (i.e. Q3 rcon style).
3. Lack of PunkBuster.
4. The lack of support for ASE and GSA/GS3D.

It looks like you guys should dump HL and CS and get Q3 and download Urban Terror:
http://www.urbanterror.net
If it's not realistic enough, get True Combat (Quake 3 mod):
http://planetquake.com/q3t/content/index.asp
A better engine, a better game, with better mods, with better support. Also, PunkBuster works better than the HL anti-cheat.
Most gamers I know like to have everything archived, have complete control over their downloads, and keep libraries of patches, and backup's of their collections. Steam is the total antithesis to this, and I think Valve is making a serious mistake using this. That's why I say, if you don't like Steam, check out Quake 3 and it's tons of mods, at least PunkBuster as an anti-cheat is effective and extremely powerful admin tool. I think if you check out some of the more realistic Quake 3 mods - like Urban Terror or True Combat, you may find them very enjoyable, especially when you tire of losing control over your game with Steam. Steam sure sounds a lot like Spyware.
Come to Quake 3. It's calling you.

Yah, you're right. Have you read Raven's board for Quake 4? They are making it, and are looking for ideas like yours:
http://forums.ravensoft.com/ib/ikonboard.pl
Click on Quake 4 forum.
That's what I would like to see. Games with extra features - even large terrain as you mention (or at least some maps with large terrain and vehicles - or modes that have it) yet with the perfect physics and weapons of Quake 3. I can always dream.

True, but the weapons in Quake 3 are so powerful and you can run so fast with strafe jumping, you don't need vehicles. It just seems to me that big maps and vehicles simply slow a game down when all a player wants to do is engage in toe to toe, extremely intense, combat - something Quake 3 offers, and other games fall short on. I'm just not convinced Halo will be as intense or fun.
