That exploit was driving me nuts. Kept getting nailed by the same guy a few days ago because he was using it.

I don't know about the spy being overpowered though. I think the Spy has a greater skill difference than any other class. A bad player as a Spy will never even get behind an enemy, a good player as a Spy is going to have you throwing your mouse.

The best counter to the Spy is good communication by the team. Usually I'll just start using my mic when I join a server, giving out basic info and before long other people wake up and start using theirs too.

1. Portal Map Nov 6, 2007, 12:14 Bucky

Just grabbed it, but I probably won't get to it until sometime this weekend. It's a shame, because judging from the comments it's pretty darn good.

@Blue

Any Portal map releases need their own section, even if it's just something like the etc. section. I almost missed this. Alright, in truth they don't and certainly don't warrant it; I just don't want to miss any new puzzles.

Agree, and agree. My buddies and I were quite literally screaming about that, especially after the offensive interference call on Moss. I think the Colts could have won it if Manning hadn't been stripped; the Patriots defense could not stop Addai.

It was good to see Watson back too, as he's my favorite player.

Must....resist.

I hate beta's, because all I really sign up for is to get at the game early. I'd rather wait until it's done to play it so that my first impression isn't marred.

However, I really want to play this game. So, to reiterate:

Must. Resist.

Do we still have links to the giant pink... um.... cast that Hudson had?

See? This is what I'm talking about.

Portal really needs a counter so that you can set personal records for things like the long jump; I did a quick trip through a level to unlock that achievement and I know I went a lot further than 300 feet.

Dog costume pics, Blue?

I'm amazed you still try. Every time he posts a picture it quickly becomes a Blue's News legend; we've probably contributed to some deep-seated fear of his by now. I wonder if he can hold a camera without having flashbacks....

But once again, Stardock gets my money. What a great group of people.

No kidding. Awesome stance on copy protection. Unbelievable licensing on their games. Nice non-intrusive almost entirely optional online download/update system (Stardock Central). Quite possibly the best post-release support I've ever seen (both in patches and extra added content). Excellent community interaction.

And then there's GCII, which is phenomenal by any standard.

Woops, got a bit long winded there. Is it possible to be in love with a game company?

Lookin forward to Sins of a Solar Empire, too...

I think that's the very reason they're not pushing it back, Sins is due around that time. Of course, Sins has been at the top of my most-anticipated list since I heard about it.

There goes more of my money, and even more of my life.

Seriously though, it's one of the best games I've ever played. Dark Avatar was a huge update, and Twilight of the Arnor promises to be even bigger. GCII is one of those games I'll still be loading up years from now; a distinction very few games get.

5. Re: Upgrade Oct 29, 2007, 21:32 Bucky

Though if the PCIE 2.0 is a hardware update I'll have to go with another brand, as I have no need of a new Mobo at this time.

A PCIE 2.0 card will work fine in a first gen PCIE (x16) slot. All PCIE 2.0 does is double the available bandwidth, which will probably not show any significant performance increase at this point in time. A motherboard upgrade to a 2.0 compliant board is more likely to see a performance increase from the higher FSB speeds than anything else.

1. Upgrade Oct 29, 2007, 10:55 Bucky

Unless AMD pulls off something incredible in both the CPU and GPU areas it looks like I'll be building another Intel/Nvidia system.

The performance/price of the 8800GT is insane. I'm very glad I waiting on my upgrade now....and then I'll finally get to play Bioshock at a real resolution.

Eh, there's too many games already that are using (though not requiring or really needing) DX10. Bioshock, Crysis, the Company of Heroes expansion, UT3, and probably a whole list of games that are soon to be released.

I just wish I could find someplace to get the full version of Home Premium for a decent price. Truth be told though I only need Home Basic...the only thing I use Windows for is gaming.

Yes it will.

You just made my day. I'll upgrade my 7950GX2, and then the motherboard and CPU a little bit after Intel and AMD get their new CPUs out the door. Not that my Core 2 Duo E6600 is aging.....but still.

Of course, I'll probably just OC my CPU and wait another half a year or so. I still have to sink $200 into Vista just to get DX10.

Looks like I'm going to be picking up the 8800GT as my next card, but my question is will it work on an older PCI-ex16 slot? (Intel 965p chipset)

News Comments > TF2 Patched, Orange Box SDK Nears
4. Re: TF2 patch Oct 27, 2007, 19:43 Bucky

It makes it worse, because now the engie will just camp with his gun. Before, he could throw up a gun and then run around helping, and if he died his dispenser and sg would keep his teammates alive.

Not really. Engineers are the second highest target in sudden death, right behind the medic. I typically play as a soldier, and one of my favorite things to do is unload 4 rockets at the camping engineer from outside the range of the SG. Thanks to the engineer bashing the hell out of his SG is won't go down, but he will--and his SG along with him.

4. Re: No subject Oct 26, 2007, 12:20 Bucky

From what I've seen all the beta drivers really do is add SLI profiles (and the required compatibility flags) for a given game. Helpful if you run SLI or a GX2, otherwise they aren't really needed.

Wow, there's some great fixes in the Steam updates. The server browser refresh now supposedly works on the first refresh.

Other highlights:

TF2
Improved autobalance calculation code when determining who to switch

Good. I've been switched several times when I was in the top two.

Engineer buildings now explode when the Engineer dies during sudden death

This should really help out SD. Unfortunately it's going to make engineers even more likely to camp themselves next to the dispenser/sentry combo.

I know Portal updated too, but I don't see any update notes for it.

The bonus maps are a little brutal. Hope they release more maps or at least update the SDK so others can.

It's the challenges that are brutal. I've only accomplished a few, and then I've barely managed to get bronze. I'm convinced gold isn't even possible for some of them. As for more maps, I've seen alpha release of some Portal maps; I'm sure a good mapping community will spring up around Portal. My greatest wish is for the old Radium HL map review site to be resurrected as a Portal map review site.

I'm also going to have to agree with I <3 [<3]. Valve should make that into a bumper sticker.

On a somewhat related note, does anyone else in here regularly use Ubuntu as a Linux distro.? I updated to the latest edition last night and have all sorts of problems with my external monitor now. Before, it was just cloning desktops between the lappy and the monitor, now it won't let me set the monitor as the default. I've restored the entire computer and putting on Kubuntu and seeing if KDE works a little better this time around (had zero problems with it when I used it to introduce myself to Linux with it).

I ask, no, I beg you, do not use Kubuntu. It is the single worst example of a KDE based distro that I have ever used.

With the limited info I'd guess that the update to Gutsy also put you into contact with Compiz Fusion for the first time, though I don't know if it's enabled by default. That could be the problem; I'd also check on the display driver that's in use.

Huh, I just went poking around and noticed that there's a Clone Desktop module in Compiz Fusion, which might be just what you need. I'm running Compiz Fusion 0.6.2 with plugins-main and plugins-extra.
