News Comments > The Orange Box Midnight Madness
9. Re: Is it me... Oct 6, 2007, 00:06 Bucky

Or is Valve/EA trying to ride on Halo 3's PR coat tails with a 'Midnight Madness' ?

Except that they did this very same thing with HL2. I believe they did it as well with Ep1. Heck, people were in an uproar when Bioshock wasn't unlocked at midnight, as it had come to be expected.

So no, they aren't copying Halo 3. (There's nothing there worth copying anyway.....) Edit: Except the Warthog. A physics defying, machine gun carrying 4-wheel vehicle of death (to both sides) is probably worth a nod.

Which part, the Cedega bit or openSUSE failing to work on my system?

The pertinent gaming part:

Cedega is a program that is designed to allow Windows based games to be played under Linux. It isn't free. I know Mandriva sells certain OS packages in order to generate revenue (though they've consolidated the offerings) and I'm assuming that Cedega will be packaged with just such a thing. Edit: Being packaged with the upcoming Mandriva release gives Cedega more exposure (to my knowledge this is the first such deal involving Cedega), resulting in more revenue and more development, and before you know it Windows is no longer needed to game! Ok, ok, so maybe I was stretching it with that last part.

I have no idea how well Cedega works. I'd like to give it a try and find out, but I'm about to wipe out my Linux install and see if I can get openSUSE working. Perhaps later this month I'll try it. On second thought I'll just resize my PCLOS partition and make another one for openSUSE.....why didn't I do that the first time?!?

Looks like Cedega is getting packaged with the pay version of Mandriva, which is understandable. I've been tempted to give Cedega a whirl, I may do just that soon.

Of course, I'm mostly just waiting for the latest Mandriva release. It's been delayed by what I assume is a desire to fix more bugs. RC2 was great, and given that my favorite distro (PCLOS) is based on Mandriva it may end up as my new desktop distro--especially since openSUSE 10.3 has some serious issues with my system (who needs a GUI or functioning GRUB install? :|)

If you look at the Orange Box breakdown Valve lists the individual cost of each component. It would seem that they'll make each available for purchase independently, but taking the few seconds to find this out is obviously too much effort for some people. They'd rather rant and create a public record of their own deficiencies.

Just because YOU didn't like them, does that mean no one else can have a server like that?

I never said that, though I may not have been very clear the way I worded it. I was simply stating the same reasons Valve gave for pulling FF and putting my support behind it. I have no problem with finding a server without FF, but I believe pulling it from the game completely will help keep the community together (I still have nightmares about UT2k4s fragmented community).

This is first big fps online that has FF removed for no good reason...

Game Balance. Gameplay. I'll grant that not everyone agrees that removing FF was for the better, but those are good reasons. I always hated FF in TFC and thought it was even worse in TF2, so I for one am glad they pulled it.

From most of the stuff I've read it sounds like UT3 has much more of a UT99 feel to it. They've also been saying for some time that while the game looks great the system requirements would likely come as a surprise by how low the bar would be.

I wonder how my 2.4 Core 2 Duo (Conroe), 2Gb, 7950GX2 will run it. I guess I'll have to wait and see.

There are undocumented changes; drives me nuts but they do it all the time. I've noticed some more detail added to some of the maps as well as a counter above each class. Now when you go to choose you can quickly find out how many of a given class your team has.

The "Very High" texture option does look better, but it also comes with a bit of a performance hit.

I hope they add the portal gun into episode 3, or atleast hl2 deathmatch

HL2DM requires a few little things first, like support. You know, bug fixing, balance, new maps, etc.

I'm far more excited about Portal than anything else in the Orange box...

I said the same, having expected nothing of TF2. As is fairly obvious, TF2 came out and showed everyone that they didn't spend all that time making a shitty game.

I'm pumped for Portal, but I'm worried about how much content there will be. I'd assume that once the basics got nailed down it would all be mapping and play testing after that, which is why I'm hoping a good mod community builds around Portal. I'd also be willing to pay for Valve made map packs for the game, assuming it's priced fairly.

I'm really hoping a strong mod community springs up around this game to offer more puzzles. I'd love to see a site dedicated to Portal, perhaps a revival of the old Radium HL map site.

Different games for different folks.

Exactly. I played with the demo, and while I found it good, I prefer TF2. Then again, I've never been a fan of large scale games like this (Battlefields, etc) and have always preferred small scale games and old school deathmatch.

That's a good interview, I suggest reading it. It's surprising how much thought went into all the little things in TF2, and it came out spectacular. The focus on gameplay is clearly showing now; honestly, how often to you find such a generally positive response to a game?

Myself, I can't stop playing TF2.

So you join a team with four snipers (or too many of another class). And not one Engineer to counter the Scout rush? D'Oh!

For 2Fort, start as a Pyro and book it to the intel room. I usually get 2 or 3 quick kills ambushing Scouts on the early game rush, and it's great 'cause they never see it coming.

Yea its been a great card but long in the tooth now..

Agreed. BioShock brought my card to it's knees; the only reason I haven't gone out and picked up an 8800GTS is because I'm trying to hold off for the rumored 9 series in a month.

With some luck the 9 series will go retail before UT3 does.

Refreshes of the 8xxx series were canned, so you'll never be seeing GX2 88xx. I love my 7950 GX2 even if it does run really hot.

Rumors currently have the 9xxx series at mid-November, however, they are all rumors. There's also been some stuff floating around lately about the card requiring PCIe2, again though, it's all rumor.

Edit: Thanks Shai-Tan. I uninstalled nHancer, but I might give it a whirl with that fix in place.

EDIT: IF sents have a problem, it's that they _feel_ a little like they acquire and begin to fire faster than they did back in they day, and they push MUCH harder. I was in air once as a demo, and I was blown all the way from one wall of well's courtyard to the other by a sentry--and I survived! The sentry blew me clear out of its line of sight.

They do, and the push-back is nasty. A Heavy with Uber can be hard pressed to even get close enough to take out a sentry with two of them firing. I find that Soldiers work best for taking out sentries, followed by several sticky grenades from a Demoman all detonated at once. Keep in mind that the Demoman has a LONG range with his sticky grenade launcher once it's charged up.

then there's only one command which defaults to V and talks to your team only.

This depends on the server setting. Some set it to global chat which is, IMO, stupid. I do wish Valve would implement a switch of some sort for team/global though.
