5. Re: Nothing wrong with Vista's performan Dec 24, 2007, 08:30 Bucky

I just upgraded to Vista recently after finding it for a good price at CompUSA. I really haven't seen any gaming performance difference, and it certainly feels faster when it comes to desktop stuff than XP. Keep in mind though that this is all subjective stuff without personal benchmarks to back it up.

I'll find out what 64 bit Vista performance is like just after the 1st of the year. I've got an extra 2GB of memory (for a total of 4) on the way along with an 8800GT--and I already received the 64 bit disc from Microsoft.

I'm very, very tempted to pick up the Orange Box soundtrack-- and that's saying something as I'm the kind of person that doesn't normally care about collectors editions, shirts, soundtracks or anything like that.

Talk about a slow day....I'm actually reorganizing all my bookmarks right now. On that note, does anyone know if exporting Firefox bookmarks will save the ones in the bookmarks tool bar as well? What about rss feeds?

Edit: Wow, it's amazing how many of my old gaming bookmarks I've had to trash. Sites that have either turned to crap, been bought out, or just plain old no longer work. Now I feel old.

I still wish the old Radium Half-Life map site would get resurrected and rededicated to Portal too. That's easily the site I miss the most.

ok - seriously - how do they get through?

Ah, I should have been a bit clearer. They all go straight to the spam folder, I almost never see spam in the inbox. I just don't want spam at all.

I realize that the chances of getting my wish are about the same as the chances of DNF getting released this decade, but we can hope.

Mind telling me how to pull off the same feat? My public email address (gmail) is still getting upward of 100 spam messages every 12 hours. Granted I've been using the same address with different email hosts for years, so most spammers just use the name and send it to every known host as well. I really should change it, but it's used for all of my gaming stuff too, and that's one long list. *sigh*

At least the gmail spam filter is damn good. It didn't swallow the real Microsoft email I got when I ordered Vista 64 from them.

News Comments > NVIDIA Vista Drivers
1. No subject Dec 21, 2007, 10:57 Bucky

These drivers finally fixed the shadow flicker I was getting in Source based games. For some reason only one GPU on my 7950GX2 was rendering shadows. The only way to fix this before the driver update was to turn on SLI AA, which would crush my framerate.

There's more snow out there than I've seen in several years, and that's after an unusually warm Fall. Not that I mind too much, just sayin'.

On another note, I'm playing laptop repairman today. I'm reinstalling Windows XP on a laptop and need a good free firewall. Any recommendations? It's been awhile since I've had to secure a Windows system and I'm not sure if the free version of Zonealarm is still the best bet or if there's something better out there now.

2. Re: sheesh Dec 14, 2007, 00:17 Bucky

A lot of their driver releases have to do with adding game profiles for SLI support. This is a godsend for me, as my 7950GX2 requires those profiles as well even though it's a single-slot solution.

I literally just grabbed those drivers too, as I just installed Vista after getting a good deal on it at CompUSA. Now I need to go buy a DX10 card....

It's getting really nasty out there.

Same here in Western Massachusetts. Good thing I have some sick time left to burn up before the end of the year, as I'm sure as hell not going to work in this crap.

I also highly recommend that people visit a local CompUSA if there's one nearby, they have some damn good deals going on. I picked up a pair of Sennheiser HD465 headphones for $30 ($50 from newegg). These things rock too. I didn't realize it, but from the sound difference I must have blown out my old headphones. Oops.

How's THAT for rough.

I found out the other day that Sprint charges $30 per MB of data (at least they do on my plan). I found out the hard way--we won't say by how much. Verizon Wireless charges $1.99/MB. My contract ends in July.

Fortunately I just saw on spoofee.com that Sprint is changing some of their surcharges, which constitutes a material change. I should be able to get out of the contract and avoid the $200 early termination fee. Then they can kiss my ass; service sucks, customer service sucks, billing sucks, etc, etc.

Yeah, they pulled the free software part around noon yesterday---about an hour after I signed up. I found out right after I took the survey, so they got that outa me though I'm sure as hell not installing that program now.

Glad I followed everyone's advice about buying EVGA - just submitted the step-up info for the new 8800GTS 512 MB.

How painless was it? I'm very tempted to buy the 8800GTS 512 in the next few weeks and then use the step-up in February when NVIDIA releases their high-end 9 series card.

27. Re: UT Dec 9, 2007, 00:27 Bucky

I'm really trying to like TF2, but the turrets everywhere really ruin the game for me. What's the skill in deploying an uber-killing machine and watching the points roll in?

Turrents aren't really that hard to take down unless there's almost no teamwork going on. Soldiers and Demomen can make short work of turrents, and a medic+anyone can as well. Remember two things: 1. Turrents have limited range and, 2. They have a delay between lock-on and fire. I've actually found that taking out a turrent in the intel room in 2fort is pretty easy as a scout due to the lock-on delay and the scouts inherent speed.

I like to have the feeling that if I kill someone, it matters, and if I die, it hurts me and my team.

Amen. The respawn timers also add a certain amount of flow to the game, where teams can push back and forth as reinforcements hit. Personally, I avoid fast respawn servers like the plague.

3. Ads Dec 7, 2007, 12:28 Bucky

Gah, that frackin' Boost Mobile flash pop-up ad is really driving me nuts. Turning ad-block on for now and firing off an email to blue.

Or am I the only one getting that?

5. Bad Ad Dec 1, 2007, 22:28 Bucky

I've been getting a really annoying Boost Mobile flash pop-over ad the last couple of days. Anyone else?

If I see it again I'll grab the URL and fire it off to Blue in an email.....and yes, I know I can kill ads. Blue's is specifically whitelisted.

Does anyone else have the problem of clicking a link in email or a document and Firefox opening two windows?

I've never seen that. Try disabling all of your extensions and testing, it sounds like something is acting a little wacky. You know, I'm kind of surprised I've never seen something strange like that, considering how many extensions I have installed and running. *knocks on wood*
