I think the universe RJ created is great and might end up a greater legacy than the WoT series. I'm still eagerly awaiting the final book, and it's been a long, LONG wait.

My biggest gripe with the whole WoT series is that the characters have always felt a bit too one-dimensional. I've always preferred authors that write the story around the characters, not the other way around. That said, I've enjoyed the series as a whole and am rather interested in a game based on the universe.

Playing this game on advanced wasn't that hard

I think part of that has to do with the fact that there's only 2 levels in the demo. Take note of your team's condition at the end of the second level--in most of my games on advanced the team is in rough shape. If you were to continue everyone would have to burn the health packs right at the start of the third level which would make things rather difficult later down the road. I believe that the difficulty will scale a lot better when you try to play through an entire location.

Eh, just shows what it is like when a game is made for a console then the PC....

Na, it's only the UI that was made for a console. You'd think someone would have learned something from the steaming pile that is UT3s UI, but oh no, Valve decided to make the same Goddamn mistake.

God Damn You Valve. You made such a badass game and NOT A DAMN PERSON CAN PLAY IT. Fuck.

QFT.

Personally I'm a big Team Fortress 2 fan so I have to ask how it compares to that?

As am I. Unfortunately it's apples and oranges. I've been playing a lot of TF2 lately, and I can see this game taking over all my multiplayer time. It's Co-Op against Zombies. I get wood just saying that. Uhoh

Seriously though, they're very hard to compare. The gameplay is so different. I see a much stronger emphasis on teamwork and communication; on the flip side, you can't go off alone. You always need a teammate around to save your ass. I can't give a good comparison, you'll need to play the demo. Just don't set off the car alarm when you do.

Ok, I take back my previous comments about this game not being a 10. I just played on a dedicated server with 3 other guys, working as a team and using voice (advanced difficulty)----pure awesome. The gameplay easily tops out any multiplayer interface woes.

God I love this game already. I've yet to see a pissed off Witch yet, though....

Edit: I should mention, at the end of those two levels we all finished alive. No one over 40% health, no medkits or pills left, and 3 guys were running on borrowed time.

It's funny, I can host the first level fine. After that, my computer chokes on itself. CPU gets pegged at 100% and I lag like crazy, though everyone else plays fine. No problems in SP. This is on a Core 2 Duo, E6600 overclocked to 3.0 GHz with 4GB RAM.

On a side note, the Blues News steam group is now too big to show all players. How are you supposed to see who's playing what then? If you view the group's page, it show's who's in a game, but not what game and doesn't give you the option to join them.

Sometimes, if you view the person's profile, it'll give you the option to join the game from there. It's a bit wonky right now though, I don't think the demo is supported quite right.

This game would be an instant 10 from me, except for the multiplayer issues. I have faith Valve will sort it out, and fast, so my pre-order remains. And guys, play on Advanced if it's 4 people--you'll struggle to get through 2 levels with everyone alive.

News Comments > Galactic Civilizations II Patch
5. Re: Twilight of the Arnor Nov 5, 2008, 21:52 Bucky

How is it? Anyone got it and played it? I bought Dark Avatar and think I've yet to complete a single game in it, but I've been thinking about replaying GalCiv2, and wonder if I should get it.

I've played it many times. Far superior to either GCII or DA--think of it as the most refined and well done version. I never fire up GCII or DA anymore, TA is simply the culmination of several years of awesome. The biggest thing is unique tech trees and improvements; the different races truly play differently now.

Another question, how do you update from Stardock to Impulse? Does it import your account settings and everything automatically?

I left SDC installed, downloaded and installed Impulse (check to see if everything was OK) and then deleted SDC. Everything worked as it should and flawlessly (and this was on a beta of Impulse, it should be even better now).

Hmm..if I try to update this through Impulse it wants to delete the game first before applying the update...hope I keep my savegames.

That's odd. Were you running one of the 2.0 beta releases?

Glad this is out. I've been holding off on starting a new game until it hit, mostly because I wanted the espionage changes in there.

News Comments > Steam Cloud This Week
8. Re: Steam Cloud This Week Nov 4, 2008, 06:25 Bucky

That's crazy. Personally I get annoyed when games use 'c' for crouch, as that's just bloody awkward - how am I meant to turn right when I'm using that finger for crouching? At least with Ctrl - or 'Shift' as you somewhat bizarrely use - can be pressed by your spare pinky.

My reasoning has always been that more commonly used actions should be a close as possible to WASD without interrupting movement or aim if possible. CTRL is ok, but it's much easier to hit shift to crouch--after all, when was the last time you actually used a keybind for 'walk'?

It's probably a bad sign when I'm already checking Steam compulsively to see if I can start the download.

Saving binds is nice, but I'm generally happy with the default layouts--except for crouch. Why must everyone reverse crouch and walk? Shift is for crouch, ctrl is for walk. Annoyed

Actually I need to wait and see if this is fun solo, as I no longer really have anyone to play with

Multiplayer Co-op against zombies.

I've been sold ever since I heard that, and still am. Honestly, they could have charged more and I still would have bought it without hesitation. Now to go hone my aim while I wait for release day.

Grab it off of Impulse (via Stardock). No DRM whatsoever, the handiness of an online client to download and keep updated, and no need for Impulse to be running to play The Witcher as it's completely seperate.

I just installed the Comodo Suite (Free). Antivirus + Firewall. I'm of the camp that believes being careful is enough, but having just had my place set up with it's own dedicated cable modem (and not yet having a router) I needed some sort of firewall in between. So far, I like it. Then again, I only hung up with Comcast about 10 minutes ago, so my usage so far has been minimal.

Now the real test. I need to fire up TF2 and make sure it works--since for the last 3 months I couldn't play online for more than 10 minutes without my connection dropping (finally tracked it down to the VOIP setup that the landlord uses).

Edit: I can play online again! Woohoo! Party2
*Immediately pre-orders Left4Dead*

32. Re: Good Old Games Open Beta Oct 23, 2008, 19:15 Bucky

Damnit. Now there's no reason for me to avoid the site since it's in open beta. I should just shred my credit card right now and pray I forget the numbers.

What's worse is System Shock 2 was released when I went on hiatus from PC gaming; by the time I came back it was already dated. I've never played it. Now I don't have much of an excuse. Edit: Didn't realize they don't have SS2. Good thing for me, I already had the card out. Shocked

Interesting side note: Of the games on my shelf (and not stuff in a box and tucked away) reside the original Freespace, Freespace: Silent Threat and Freespace 2. I still load 'em up and play through on occasion.

Even better, since I recently decided to play my way through the Half-Life saga again.

I forgot how awesome Half-Life is. It still holds up very well, even with the aging tech.
