yeah. but i have a sad feeling it would be the last commercial game with linux binaries for a long time. i hope not, but i think it is. It's odd, but I have the opposite feeling. With Linux gaining more ground against Windows it would seem to be more likely that developers (and publishers) will start to including Linux binaries. Of course, we still have the whole directX problem, but one thing at a time.

I was being facetious. After you've spent a few weeks cruising the Ubuntu forums (especially the newb area) you learn to treat everything seriously. I forget that when I wander back over here.
When I install it I'm going to install it on a separate unformatted partition. If I end up liking it more than Windows, and more importantly, if it does everything I want it to do satisfactory, then eventually I will completely format my drive and install only Ubuntu on it. I just don't want to do that outright as I have an afternoon's worth of backing up to do in that case. If that happens you don't even need to do a second install. Just boot Ubuntu from the LiveCD, start GParted, nuke the Windows partition and then resize the Linux one. At least, I think it can be done like that. I know that Linux OSes that use a journaled filesystem (ext3, ReiserFS) can be resized smaller without any issue and I believe the same is true for making the partitions bigger as well.
You may want to keep an open partition anyway so that you can distro-hop a bit. Trust me, it'll happen.

I downloaded Ubuntu to install on my laptop last week. The only reason I haven't installed it yet is I haven't had the time to go pick up some CD-Rs to burn the ISO. Come on, just add some more features to make it large enough to warrant a DVD ISO so I can use up some of these DVD-R's.
Soon as I get some though, I'm going to install it on a seperate partition to make sure it's completely worth switching. I only use my laptop for general internet usage, so I don't care if there is little or no game support. Part of the Ubuntu design philosophy is to keep the file size small enough to fit on a CD. There are distros out there that are DVD based, though this is more from the inclusion of a large amount of software than anything else. Once you get Ubuntu installed fire up Synaptic and browse through the huge software repositories.
If you plan to reformat when you install Ubuntu install Windows first, on the first partition, and then install Ubuntu. Windows gets cranky if it isn't first, and while there are configuration changes that can be made to get it to work it's just easier to drop Windows on the first partition.

Ubuntu outsells Vista |

So an OS that is completely free is outselling Vista? Aaahahaha...
I am glad to see it though, as it'll help support them. I'm also glad to see that it's winning more converts to Linux, even if GNOME does drive me insane.

Re: Manhunt 2 PC |

The game has obscene amounts of violence for the simple sake of violence--it's revolting. Most of the games out there have graphical depictions of violence for two reasons:
1. Immersion. Let's face it, if I shoot someone in the face with a shotgun he's not gonna look too pretty afterward. Not the most pleasant thought, but I happen to have a brain; I can separate reality from a video game.
2. As a gameplay mechanic. Location based damage, the importance of aim, visual cues as to your performance, cues for gameplay conditions, etc. An example of this that I used was a 'blood patch' for Medal of Honor multiplayer. It made it easier for me to tell if I was hitting a player (the blood 'puffs') as well as blood puddles and splatters on the environment which would give a visual indication that a fight had recently occurred in the area. If you came across another player soon after it was a fairly good assumption that he was involved in the previous firefight and therefore in a weakened state.
And then we have Manhunt 2, where you can rip off a man's testicles. Other than satisfying the sadistic nature of kids who like to rip the wings off of insects and kick kittens, who the hell would find that entertaining? What pisses me off the most is all the publicity both the developer and publisher are getting as a result of the AO rating and the fact that they're sitting in a room somewhere laughing about all the advertising without paying a dime.
I understand defending violence in games as a gameplay mechanic, or as freedom of expression (or art or however you want to phrase it) but seriously this game should just be left to rot.

Starbase manager! Woo!
That they are finally going to make anomalies randomly return is great, too. I know there was a planetary upgrade that gave all your ships the ability to explore anomalies, but since they didn't return it was useless (also the reason I can't remember what it is called).

I don't know why I'm posting this! Drunk? High? Really, really bored?
I need to reinstall Riddick. I got it through Fileplanet with the points I had gotten from subscribing....unfortunately I did a reinstall not long after and haven't gotten around to playing it again.

I'm a huge Stardock fanboy, and after reading some of the developer interviews I'm sure Sins will be a great game. Unfortunately I hate beta testing--most people use it as an excuse to play a game early and I'd rather wait until it's finished.
I still play SR2 occasionally, installed from the CD. Install, run SF removal tool, apply cracked .exe and enjoy. I'll probably pick it up through Stardock once Sins goes gold though, since I'll just pick up a handful of tokens.

This is one of those games I always keep installed and up to date. I'll play it like crazy for a week or two, take a break, and then I'm back in again.
GC2 and DA are probably going to inhabit my gaming machine right up until a GC3 gets released.

Want to keep PC gaming going strong and leave MS behind? Get more developers to include Linux builds. UT2004 did this (I believe Epic has done it with other games as well). Runs great and no Windows needed.
As soon as gamers (along with developers and publishers) realize that Windows is not needed for PC gaming things will turn around. Price of a game, $50 or so. Price of a Linux distro...well, how much does a single blank CD-R cost?
Remember when PC gaming started out and the games came on floppies with their own boot discs? No OS needed (usually). It's the same idea.
Yes, I've become a Linux fanboy. Give me a good reason not to be.

What I really want to play is TF2 or ET:QW. Any suggestions to tie me over until then? I have the same problem. I found Oblivion to be too repetitive, NWN2 still runs like a pig on my system, and I haven't been able to get into STALKER. I've been playing C&C3 and HL2DM to tide me over for now, though I'll probably give Oblivion another go in the next few days.
I save GalCivII/DA for when I know I'll have free time, otherwise I tend to forget to do things like eat and sleep.

I'm running the HD Audio onboard (Realtek ALC883) and I swear it sounds better than my Audigy 2 ZS did. I didn't see any performance hit between the two and my 5.1 sounds great on it.
Best of all, no shitty Creative drivers and control panel.
I did notice the strange feedback loop with the mic, but figured it was a setting I was missing. I ended up getting a USB mic anyway 'cause my old one sucked, so problem solved there.

LCDs are getting better, but I'm still sticking with CRT for now. Good LCDs don't suffer from ghosting anymore, but I think that they are still too bright in general. I had to turn my down from 100% to 50%, and it's still a little too bright. That said, having switched from my 19" CRT to a 20" Widescreen LCD a couple of weeks ago, I love it. No ghosting, no image lag (the amount I play HL2DM, I'd notice) and I'd swear my framerates have actually gone up.

bucky, is it an inspiron 5150? I had one of those, just upgraded. STALKER plays a lot more nicely I8600. It's purely used for desktop stuff, but without the video drivers installed the screen redraw rate was so slow that you couldn't even scroll a webpage without the whole thing chugging. I've got the laptop on one side updating and I'm busy with my desktop, getting it ready for a triple (or maybe quad) boot option.
