With Steam sales, the price is right.

Not if you're coming at Steam with an Australian ip address, it isn't. Read my recent comment in the thread about THQ if you want to know more, but frankly, it's scary the number of publishers that are bumping up their prices for foreign customers over Steam.

In any case, you're right about lower prices being the reason why, but it's not quite so black and white for the rest of us.

8. Re: THQ Fiscal Results May 5, 2010, 19:17 Ventura

Whatever they're doing, it must be working. Personally, I just fucking hate THQ.

I load up their Metro 2033 on my Australian steam, and it's $79.99. I load it up via a US proxy server, and it's $49.99. It gets worse; Red Faction Guerrilla is $19.99 to US residents, $69.99 to Australian residents.

I'd hate to think that it's these kinds of practices that are what's keeping the money coming in.

In all seriousness, I'd love a bloody good squash game on the Wii, and the crap Racquet sports from Ubisoft with terrible controls and an average metacritic rating of 51 doesn't count.

Oh my, did we step on your toes there fanboi? Sorry about that. I guess you are right after all STO is a fun game and EVERYBODY else is wrong.

In his defense, I wouldn't say it isn't a fun game. There's certainly something to be had here if you like your Trek, and I know I got a few hours out of it. Enough to make Commander, at any rate.

It's just... it's repetitive. Extremely so. Ground combat is a tedious, monotonous crawl through bad guys, and ship combat doesn't really feel like it ever changes.

You get access to a new ship every 10 levels, which is one MOTHER of a grind. Basically you have to stomach a week of absolute repetition just for a couple of hours of choosing and customising a new ship... and then it begins again.

If you can go through that four times, you'll make it to admiral. I did it twice, before I absolutely positively couldn't stand the thought of playing any more.

2. Re: Activision Signs Bungie for 10 Years Apr 29, 2010, 09:10 Ventura

I'm guessing the kind of independence that they will have is something the poor Infinity Ward chaps don't. No doubt Bungie have the capital to fund their own projects, and are therefore just using Activision's ability to publish and distribute.

Tempting to get back in COH again

Yeah I'll say. I actually enjoyed it more than Champions Online, to be honest.

That's nothing against Cryptic though, infact I have some holiday time coming up, and it's likely I'll head back into Star Trek Online instead. It's either that or WoW, and I don't much like the thought of that one.

News Comments > Two More Tom Clancy Games Coming?
5. Re: Two More Tom Clancy Games Coming? Apr 29, 2010, 01:00 Ventura

It's all about arcade these days guys, nobody cares about simulation because so few people buy it.

That said, I spent more time with Vegas 2 than I care to admit. It's far from being the worst game I've ever played, even though the cover system is obviously cheating.

In the presence of hugely popular arcade types like Gears of War, I'm hardly about to expect them to shoot themselves in the foot by releasing another simulation, just for my benefit. They're going to do what brings in the most money.

I don't care about their online DRM (which they're bound to keep using), if they bring out a new Rainbow Six and the gameplay footage looks half decent, it's likely I'll buy it regardless.

News Comments > Activision's Lawsuit Response
36. Re: Apr 28, 2010, 05:24 Ventura

In other words, the wording of thier response indicates to me personally there's probably written evidence of the whole bonus thing

I hope so, for their sake, because the world's a shithole in my experience, and most bosses won't give you any more if they don't have to. They could be laughing all the way to the bank while you're doing all the work, they won't care. And they'll sleep well at night, too.

If they got something down on paper that says they're due, like a contract, then it's a totally different ball game. In which case, it was stupid of Activision to not have paid up, because now they're just going to end up having to pay more.

And just because something is "legal" doesn't make it "right."

Indeed, legal and not legal, and right and wrong, are often two very different things.

These days though, it doesn't matter. There's not even really any such thing as a verbal contract anymore. You got to get that shit down on paper.

These guys at Infinity Ward did the hard work and deserve to be compensated for it, for that I have no doubt. But unless it was written in their contract that they're due extras if the game does well, I doubt they'll get much... unfortunately.

I hope they get everything they're asking for.

Seriously, it ain't much fun when you're doing all the work and other people are getting all the money. I don't work in game development, but I still know that feeling all too well.

But yeah FA is sitting in limbo on my drive, simspeed slow down sux

Same shit here mate. Despite Sorian himself creating a stickied thread a couple of years ago in the official AI mods forum that ballooned to 20+ pages, they never did find the cause.

Thankfully, wiping the slate clean and starting afresh fixed the issue for the sequel. It lost a lot of it's scale, for sure (which is arguably a tragedy), but I've played plenty worse games.

10. Re: More Infinity Ward Departures Apr 24, 2010, 05:21 Ventura

Must admit, I'm enjoying reading about this.

Good, hardworking people are fucked out of money that they're owed every day. That bit's not exactly news (because it's happening so often everywhere), but when enough of them feel strongly enough to be able to go independent, those that are doing the exploiting have a problem. Activision did this, I have no doubt about that, and they deserve to pay the price.

The thing I like the most is that, back in the day, Activision was first formed by a group of pissed Atari programmers, who felt they weren't getting the rewards and recognition that they were due from Atari.

Oh the irony.

It's not about the games at Activision anymore - it's all about profit

There was a time when it wasn't all about profit?

Seriously, it's starting to get difficult thinking back that far.

11. Re: Supreme Commander 2 Patched Apr 22, 2010, 06:06 Ventura

I can't say they did the wrong thing from a business standpoint, but from a gaming standpoint, I can easily say that they made a worse game the second time around

I have no comment on which is the better game (each have their pros and cons for me), but it's academic anyway, because the only thing that matters is how many copies they sell.

I've got to ask, has this Pachter dude ever been right? I mean, statistically speaking, it should have happened by now, right?

I skipped the Nintendo DSi, then just yesterday traded in my ageing DS Lite for a shiny new DSi XL, and it's definitely not a purchase I'm regretting. Ok, so a lot of the DSIWare titles also being on Apple's Ipod App store was a bit disappointing, but I am enjoying Nintendo's Game and Watch classics (they remind me of soooo long ago).

In any case, I very much doubt we'll see the 3DS down here in Australia until next year, and as far as I'm concerned, that's still a long way off yet.

News Comments > Supreme Commander 2 Patched
9. Re: Supreme Commander 2 Patched Apr 22, 2010, 04:49 Ventura

exactly what I thought: if they have to release a patch every week or so then it's a bad sign

It's not like vanilla SupCom's AI was anything to write home about either though.

**Checks Patch Notes. Sees no mention of anything that would reverse the dumbing-down it received as compared the the first. Moves along.**

The first Supreme Commander on the 360 reviewed really rather badly, scoring an average of 56. This one has 76.

They probably figure the "dumbing down" is a small price to pay.

I must admit to being really impressed with the amount of support that's been thrown at this game thus far. I haven't had the desire to play much the last month or so, but almost every week it's been like patch this and patch that.

I have to say thanks to Square Enix for it, because at this point you can attribute the original's somewhat poor level of support to the old producer, THQ.

16. Bah Ubisoft! Apr 19, 2010, 22:16 Ventura

So we're going to get a price discount because we're no longer getting physical manuals?

Yeah right.

Who are they trying to kid? Alt-tabbing out from the game to read the manual isn't exactly the most user-friendly experience one can have.

My dictionary now has a picture of the Ubisoft logo next to the name 'bollocks'.
