News Comments > More Infinity Ward Departures
10. Re: More Infinity Ward Departures Apr 24, 2010, 05:21 Ventura

Must admit, I'm enjoying reading about this.

Good, hardworking people are fucked out of money that they're owed every day. That bit's not exactly news (because it's happening so often everywhere), but when enough of them feel strongly enough to be able to go independent, those that are doing the exploiting have a problem. Activision did this, I have no doubt about that, and they deserve to pay the price.

The thing I like the most is that, back in the day, Activision was first formed by a group of pissed Atari programmers, who felt they weren't getting the rewards and recognition that they were due from Atari.

Oh the irony.

It's not about the games at Activision anymore - it's all about profit

There was a time when it wasn't all about profit?

Seriously, it's starting to get difficult thinking back that far.

I can't say they did the wrong thing from a business standpoint, but from a gaming standpoint, I can easily say that they made a worse game the second time around

I have no comment on which is the better game (each have their pros and cons for me), but it's academic anyway, because the only thing that matters is how many copies they sell.

I've got to ask, has this Pachter dude ever been right? I mean, statistically speaking, it should have happened by now, right?

I skipped the Nintendo DSi, then just yesterday traded in my ageing DS Lite for a shiny new DSi XL, and it's definitely not a purchase I'm regretting. Ok, so a lot of the DSIWare titles also being on Apple's Ipod App store was a bit disappointing, but I am enjoying Nintendo's Game and Watch classics (they remind me of soooo long ago).

In any case, I very much doubt we'll see the 3DS down here in Australia until next year, and as far as I'm concerned, that's still a long way off yet.

exactly what I thought: if they have to release a patch every week or so then it's a bad sign

It's not like vanilla SupCom's AI was anything to write home about either though.

**Checks Patch Notes. Sees no mention of anything that would reverse the dumbing-down it received as compared the the first. Moves along.**

The first Supreme Commander on the 360 reviewed really rather badly, scoring an average of 56. This one has 76.

They probably figure the "dumbing down" is a small price to pay.

I must admit to being really impressed with the amount of support that's been thrown at this game thus far. I haven't had the desire to play much the last month or so, but almost every week it's been like patch this and patch that.

I have to say thanks to Square Enix for it, because at this point you can attribute the original's somewhat poor level of support to the old producer, THQ.

16. Bah Ubisoft! Apr 19, 2010, 22:16 Ventura

So we're going to get a price discount because we're no longer getting physical manuals?

Yeah right.

Who are they trying to kid? Alt-tabbing out from the game to read the manual isn't exactly the most user-friendly experience one can have.

My dictionary now has a picture of the Ubisoft logo next to the name 'bollocks'.

right....now people are too lazy to actually TRY the game themselves.
They just like to sit there, watching a video of some other people TELLING them how the game is

You know what a walkthrough is, right? It's just someone playing the game from start to finish. Sometimes people offer up commentary, other times they don't.

Point is, you're just watching gameplay footage, and (as far as I'm concerned) walkthroughs without commentary are a great way to find out what the gameplay is all about.

well FA was based on the bug-fixed SupCom 1 engine so they updated FA only twice. Yeah, there still are quite a few minor bugs in FA especially with experimentals, nothing serious though... I've never had one of those memory holes that are allegedly slowing down the game to a crawl.

Play FA with one or more AI's on a large map like Setons. You'll get the bug with the sim speed dropping to a crawl, guaranteed, and it wasn't a problem in vanilla. Unfortunately, what with my being primarily a skirmish/coop gamer, it was a game breaker.

I attribute the increased effort being put into patching this sequel to their new publisher Square Enix, as opposed to THQ who published the original. FA came out less than a year after vanilla had hit shelves, and none of its patches were anywhere near as substantial as this one.

As for FA, well it's a bit unfortunate, but it was pretty much abandonware the moment it left the gate.

the world isn't flat and I'm sorry to say but Hitler died at the end of WW2...

You wanna go there? How about JFK mate? Or 911?

I'd like to believe that people are great and wonderful to each other, and that conspiracies just about never happen, but my actual experience paints a very different picture. Funny how that is.

Evidence please, or none of this happened.

Huh? Are you new to the planet Earth or something?

Try going outside mate, you know, actually leave the house. Spend some time among people, especially those that are forced to be around the same people each and every day because of the pressures of today's world. If you can do that, and you don't see evidence of people conspiring together against one another, I'll eat my shorts.

The only thing assuming this didn't happen because you don't see anything in the way of evidence tell me is that you just haven't spend very much time out there in the playing field, because given humanity's tendency to conspire against others, you're better off looking for evidence to prove it didn't happen, and not vice-versa.

Actually the iPad isn't even expensive

Starting at $499US for the barebones model, it's not exactly cheap either. That's going to be at least $699AU out here; I could buy two Netbooks at that price and have some change left over.

If I bought an iPad, it'd really just be for the sake of it, because I don't know what it's for. It's a bit too big to be portable, and there are far better surf-the-net devices, and far better gaming devices, that you can buy for a lot cheaper. The iPod Touch I can understand, it's small enough to fit in my pocket, but I don't know what the point of this thing is.

I just came back from Clash of the Titans. It's not really 3d atall, they pretty much just said it was 3d to sell more tickets.

That said, I've seen plenty worse movies. The camera work during some of the fight scenes was a bit off though, shaky cam is alright for blair witch type stuff, but I do wish they'd leave it out of stuff like this.

Heck, the thing even displays animated gifs.

So does my laptop mate, and it's a hell of a lot cheaper.

Out here in Australia I'm shuddering to think how much the iPad is going to cost when it's released. I anticipate the basic 16gig wifi model running at least a cool $700, and it's only uphill from there.

I've seen a few videos, and they look kinda cool, but you're going to have to better than "it displays animated gifs!"

Be fair to say then that they dropped the ball pretty bad on this one?

A workmate of mine who is usually a lot more forgiving with his games than I am has had just about nothing good to say about c&c4, which can only mean it must be terribly bad.

People are cowards

It's the nature of the world today. Think about how much you'd lose if you quit or lost your job and the money stopped coming in. The only reason so many of us take it up the arse at work is because they know we need it.

That's why people don't speak out. They don't give a shit about the state of these franchises, they care about stuff like their homes and posessions.

14. Re: StarCraft II Day One Patch Plans Mar 9, 2010, 17:33 Ventura

I'm backing the house on this one.

Up until very recently, I haven't bothered following Starcraft 2's progress; I mean, what's the point getting all excited and anxious for something that might still be half a year away?

Just a few days ago though, I started watching HD gameplay videos on Youtube, and now I am totally psyched up for this. I'm in the mood so much I'm tempted to reinstall the original.

I don't know how anyone else feels about this, but as far as I'm concerned, you don't start talking about doing a day one patch until you know you're kinda getting close to that release.

And I'm like... Bring... It... On!!

News Comments > Ubisoft DRM Servers Under Fire Again
15. Re: Ubisoft DRM Servers Under Fire Again Mar 8, 2010, 18:27 Ventura

If Ubisoft removes the DRM, the pirates win. If they do not remove the DRM, the paying customers lose.

Pretty sure they've already been able to crack this game to play without the DRM anyway.

Come to think of it then, the pirates are probably the only ones playing this right now. Had I bought this game and really wanted to be able to play it, I'd probably be looking into using their crack on my installation.

The way it is right now, the customers are the ones losing out. What do you choose between guilty men being let free, or innocent men being convicted? Ubisoft would go for the latter.

I bought the game on Saturday, played single player on that day and Sunday, and thought I'd try multiplayer out on Monday night.

Longest I got to play was about 15 seconds, thanks to this init bug. Come to think of it, it does explain why there was nobody else on that particular server at the time

While it looks a bit naff when you have ships move other ships out of the way when they're moving past (as I had happen in the demo), this is still a very impressive showing.
