News Comments > Modern Warfare 3 PC Details, Minimum Specs
15. Re: Modern Warfare 3 PC Details, Minimum Specs Oct 21, 2011, 19:40 Ventura

So, dedicated servers only for unranked. Ranked still uses IWnet.

Well, this one is easy enough. No buy. I believe CoD:BO may have been the last CoD title on the PC to sell in significant numbers.

An amusing comment considering BO was the last CoD title to have been released. The next one isn't out yet.

Were people actually expecting dedicated servers to be ranked? A group of players on a private dedicated ranked server could rank themselves up in next to no time if that was the objective. I'm no serious multiplayer gamer, but I'd have thought protecting the integrity of the ranking system would've been far more important.

Well, looking at Steam charts MW3 is surprisingly low compared to past CoD titles. I think PC gamers are finally getting fed up of the same reskinned game and same shitty treatment from Activision.

Actually, I've pre-ordered on the pc, but Australian Steam prices are a joke, it was over $35 cheaper for me to head down to a local store and pre-order a physical copy there.

Don't know what you mean about shitty treatment, either. Black Ops has been very well supported on the pc, and it's a disk that was packed full of things to do.

Granted, the BF3 trailers look amazing, including their most recent launch trailer. But they've had a slew of disappointing news updates of late, and coming from someone not really into multiplayer as much these days, I'll get far more from MW3's Spec Ops Survival mode than from anything they have.

Did you know that if we had an empty 9mm casing for every shot fired in the Open Beta, we would have enough brass to melt and build almost 3,900 SU-27 Flanker jets?

Just out of curiosity, but if you had an empty casing for every gamer that cancelled their preorder, what could you build with all of that?

I read the full post, and I really like the bit at the end of the first paragraph where he goes "and we’re getting sued by one of my favorite game developers", like he's listing it as one of his achievements.

I don't always like Notch, but there's no arguing his level of success, so he must be doing something right. Minecraft may well be the best $15 I've ever spent, having enjoyed many more hours on it than on games that were a lot more expensive, and while I don't think the appeal of the game is something he really understands, I do think its development is in good hands.

This is certainly a case where you need to set aside your pride and say "now that I think about it you guys are right".

Best of luck with that.

Granted, there are levels of backing stuff up. The more important it is, the greater the steps you should take. While I obviously wasn't going to be setting aside an off-site location for what was just a freeware mod, I still cared enough to copy it to something that would be with me during the day, just on the off-chance my home was burgled.

Not quite the same thing atall, considering they lost their source where I'd still have had a backup of mine, but you're welcome to go with whatever floats your boat.

Sounds like you were doing the EXACT thing they did

Except for my taking my laptop with me, you mean? Way to miss the point.

I'm not as concerned during the weekend, because there's usually always someone here, but thanks for your concern.

Sorry, no sympathy from me. While working on my freeware Warcraft 3 mod, I used to copy the unprotected map to my laptop (off my desktop) before taking it with me into work each morning.

Gotta be smarter than that.

Yeeeeaaaahhh, except most of that money was made at the box-office...you know, before the film is packaged up in a format that's easily and cheaply distributed by anyone with an internet connect.

Not that it didn't still break DVD and Blu Ray sales records though.

They're not short a buck. If they were, Cameron would just go back through the archives, add another 6 minutes and run it on the big screen again. He's good like that.

Like them or not, and say what you want about iTunes, but the quality of Apple's mobile devices are, in my opinion, second to none. I'm not big on mp3 players or mobile phones, but I've owned a couple of iPod Touches in my time, and they have always proven themselves to be outstanding devices.

RIP Steve.

John Carmack has openly admitted to the shortcomings of the engine. He did this before the game was even released.

It's no wonder they're no longer licensing out their engines.

Face it guys, like the Blizzard of old, iD are very much dead. The writing was on the wall back at Doom 3, and from the sounds of things, Rage is the nail in the coffin.

Goodbye, old friend. Thanks for Doom 1, Doom 2, and Quake 1. I'll miss you.

Or you could wait 2 weeks for the next monthly release to hit that includes them all in the update.

Yeah, because those who've just paid top dollar and bought the game brand new are really going to want to hear that.

This may not be the most popular opinion in these parts, but I absolutely cannot wait for this.

My copy's already bought and paid for, just waiting for it to release now.

As it stands, 6 months ago they were showing everyone how awesome the game is. Since then it's be nothing but reasons for people to not buy.

Pretty much sums it up for me. For my part, they don't have a hope at a purchase now.

Shocking as it may seem, some people may not enjoy the same things you enjoy

Thanks, that's about all that needs to be said by those of us lamenting the removal of bots from the Battlefield franchise.

Bots sounds good on paper, but in reality all you did in BF2 with bots was to have 60 join the enemy team, and do a 4 v 60 match (and still win!)

And this is different from every other single player FPS experience we've all ever had for at least 15 years how? Now you complain?

All this time I've had it wrong, I thought what mattered was just having fun.

News Comments > IW Doesn't Care if Three People Play MW3
64. Re: IW Doesn't Care if Three People Play MW3 Sep 22, 2011, 21:51 Ventura

If you want to attempt to convince people that a game is good, you might want to consider actually talking about the game itself, rather than relatively meaningless stats.

As those that would show up to take a dump on these games do?

Oh, I've tried that. I've defended Black Ops in these parts. For those that aren't into multiplayer, it doesn't just have the full campaign, and it doesn't just have the unique zombie mode, no, they also threw in full offline multiplayer with bots.

I don't know if MW3 is also going to have that, but that makes for one pretty packed disk in my book. Name the last time the purchase of an FPS netted you a feature list that extensive. Hell, just name one other time.

Couple that with the consistent number of sales, and if this is a bad argument, I'd hate to know what it would take to present a good argument.

Still, it beats no argument at all.

You don't think the 3.7 rating might just be slightly more relevant?

Having actually read some of those user reviews, you might wish that was a point you hadn't brought up. I took the liberty of browsing, just for you.

The first one I glanced on, he said the single player was ok, gave it 3/5. He liked the Spec Ops, gave that 5/5. Didn't like the multiplayer. Overral rating? 1/10. Huh?

The next one gave it 1/10, he said he downloaded the torrent and was disappointed with it.

Heh. And my argument is bad.

A game like CoD is not going to get a low rating, regardless of the quality of the game. That's just a given

It's not the best example, but.. Duke Nukem did. For what I consider was a relatively high-profile release, an average metacritic rating of 54 is an absolutely horrendous score. I realise the Duke franchise isn't in the same league as CoD, but it's proof that bad games will get killed by reviewers.

There's not a rule that holds true for every occasion though, and I wasn't trying to claim that reviews couldn't be bought. My point though, is that with an average metacritic of 86, coupled with the number of sales, the thought occurs that Modern Warfare 2 might actually not be a bad game.

If you want to make objective statements about "shit" games, that's fine, but the objectivity you're suggesting doesn't really exist.

So what, there are no good games and no bad games, no good movies and no bad movies... because it's all subjective?

I don't know mate, that seems a bit too much of a cop-out to me.

I find it all quite funny, to be honest. People show up in CoD threads, make jokes about taking a shit in a box or Bobby Kotick, nobody says a word. I mention average metacritic ratings and sales records, and half a dozen folks get their backs up.

McDonalds is massively popular the world over, would you take a date there for romantic meal?

If what you're after is a romantic meal with a date, then yeah, it's probably not the best spot to be.

But what if you're on your way home, don't have much time, want to grab something to eat at home, don't want to spend a lot and would prefer to not have to get out of the car?

Completely different ballgame now, isn't it?

They can even shit in the box and put a CoD sticker on it people will buy it. Oh wait, they've already did that with Modern Warfare 2, nevermind.

Worked with the press too, because it has an average Metacritic rating of 86%.

Have it your way guys. Everyone else is wrong, you're right.

I have to assume you have some hard evidence to back that up. Sorry, "everyone knows that DUUUH" is not an argument.

Probably because it wasn't an argument, brainiac, I was agreeing with him.

And I am sure that "Enter the matrix" was such an exceptionally good and awesome game

Actually, Enter the Matrix really wasn't all that bad. Sure, it had some bugs, but there was some decent gameplay in there. I should know, I was big on the Matrix and it was a day one purchase for me.

I said shit games don't break sales records, guys. I didn't say they had to be great games, and of course I realise it's not just about a product's quality.

Still, thanks for playing
