youre kidding me right? I mean your not testing this game on a keyboard and expect to be taken seriously as a review are you? OK now with that out of the way, I been playing Need for speed since its inception on the 3DO and yes its back. period. not since PU have i enjoyed this series this much.
Oh sure if all you do is play one mode like the cop chase it becomes less skill based and more like a mike tyson fight and your iron mike.
on the other hand if you are into raceing games its mighty fine indeed, Its not in the same league as rFactor but IMO its more fun and the sensation of speed is incredible.
But please dont play this game with a keyboard go buy a 5 or 10$ joypad or get wheels and pedels and then and only then will you reach heaven.

I did suspect this game not to be a full upgrade but even Creston who was its biggest fan said "modders make the game cool and they did so in X2 only took them 2 years to do it"
I'll pass on this one.
Also Creston said the movies were gonna be a sims clone , how wrong he was also about this.
Poor Creston.....

I dont have the demo but do have the euro import and I can tell you this is not a game you can just sit down with and figure out without instructions in 45 min. No fking way.
I will try to offer some general advise on how to go about getting troops and stuff running.
The common thing with all the races except aliens are that every faction has to build a base, build a troop componet, build a refinery or warehouse, build energy "most important", and every race should also look into defense and its different for all the races.
Ok the aliens are just that alien they dont mine they dont research, they dont build bases, there mobil and build lots of defensive structures and also are able to morph into several different configurations depending on what stratgy you might need to deploy, totaly unique and takes alot to get used to controling them and fighting agianst them.
Next up are the other 3 factions of which all have simular needs, they need to mine "either combination of metal & water or Rock and water, depending on the faction, the way to tell is to look up top on the screen, youll see icons up there right in the middle that tells you what minerals you need for that race to function.
Some of the factions troops can teleport out of there base and others need you to build a exit depending on what race you have control of.
this is a very complicated but good game compared to what most ppl get in america, I would say its a little over the top but I do like it very much indeed, esp the skirmish modes.
But its a crime to release this without a manuel or some kind of tutorial.

Ive been a raceing fan for a long time and ISI has been at the top of my list for doing incredible sims for EA.
Now they have gone independent and have been working on rFactor for awhile and its worth every penny, its not in stores but can be had on thier web site, be warned however its very much a work in progress still and is constantley being updated all the time, also the tracks are fictional and so are the cars, but that dosent stop the modders, as there are a couple of fine addons and full conversions that I enjoy.
As far as ToCA goes thanks btw for the tip on this as I also was fooled by those retouched screenies I saw in a mag. so I stoped waiting in line to download this as i have better things to do atm with my bandwidth and HD space.

Yes the game is good, err great even. But to compare it to Civ 4 of which I also have is like comparing apples and oranges.
AOE 3 has its feet firmly squared in RTS real time and Civ 4 is a Turn based game.
But new to this structure is the persistant Home city, ie , its like a doll house that you can color and tinker with and add ppl and what not, Its fun and functional in that you also use you home city to choose special cards "kinda like Magic trading cards" to bring into play to enable you to have different stratgies. there are War cards, medical cards, food , gold wood cards, and ect.
It adds a nice touch to this tired overcrowded RTS market thats for sure.
Also the graphics are damn nice at max levels and I have it running in 16 asio and 16 Fsaa so it looks razor sharpe and at 1280 x 1024 with no slow downs what so ever.
Now would I rate this game over civ 4? well put it this way now that i have them both I wont be parting with either of them for awhile. both will be on the HDs for years to come.
now if youll excuse me I have barberians at the gate and the dutch have just showed up at my shore looking very upset and outta cigars too, I gotta run.

grins evily, ok ok nuff with the antics lol ,
Thanks dsmart i am delighted at your game once agian, but I want to suggest to you to hire me on for ideas and stuff cause you need a visionary like me, remember it was me who suggested the wildlife, clouds on exterior of planets, more FPS control for the ground units, man oh man the only reason im pimping myself to you is I belive that with more good help from well rounded gamers like myself will result in the ultimate space game in which I think will just a few more of my ideas youll get there. but unlike the masses of Supreme Commander junkiees who gladley spew out ideas to you like there gonna give you there first born , I am not.
I like to give you ideas agian but its gonna cost you I want a stake in your company hehe then I'll continue to help Err suggest things to you Err ummm I think I will continue to suggest for free Awww shucks...lol long as I get a good space game outta it, Ill do almost anything. lol
Thx for having a sence of humor on that one dsmart and thanks for listening even after all the berateing you get you still try to help ppl man im begining to like you a little, but dont let it go to your head. just never stop working on BCK because with more $$$$$ i think your one of the best developers in this world. yeah yeah i just know it was this game thaat started it all, the precusor to GTA, those violent video games, next thing they will tell us is paris hilton is to blame for all the unsafe sex that going on in this country. Funny how the ppl who know the least about a subject often have the most to say about it.
You want a expert on violence then look no further than San Quentin or Rikers Island, ask alot of those guys if they sat home all day and played video games, hehe. alot of them dont even know what a video game is, and If they did they might not have ended up in Jail in the first place.

I suggested the wildlife back on your web site when you still had just released BCM sorry if I confused you on that one. Also I talked with you on the phone about doing your game music score, about 3 years ago.
This is why I dont feed into all the internet garbage about you cause I actually spoke with you and you took the time to sit down and talk at length with me shows your one of the best ppl on this earth let alone a good visionary.
If you do enable the joystick I will purchase this game, as a matter of fact' I'll take your word on it and there is enough to like about what you have done so far that even if you didnt enable joysticks im very tempted to buy this game for the fourth time.
Mabey this time you have a chance to crack my all time high list.
But I'll warn you ahead of time theres no way and I mean NOONE that you will ever reach the lofty heights of Space Rangers 2, as a matter of fact it just may be the best game I have ever played period. Its true that I was one of the ppl screaming about the removal of cockpits in BCk2000 but your right because theres so much to do in your ship that you dont miss the cockpit at all , every min or so your getting a VERBAL warning about something happening which reinforces the immersion level alot, so you begin to not miss the cockpits.
But with X2 it NEEDS cockpits because the immersion level in that game is very questionable at best, reason being YOU CANT INTERACT with planets, DOGFIGHTING sucked in X2 and its slightley better in X3 i hear, So it needs all the help it can get and Cockpits were paramount to them achieving that for me.
dsmart your game has immersion in spades its just FRIGGIN hard to get to grips with all the controls even though I have to a degree, hell even your FPS modle is more sophisticated than alot of dedicated FPS how eveI feel your ALMOST there with the FPS stuff and the planet textures when in FPS mode in the woods is amazing to say the least.
No its not HL2 or Unreal warfare but for all you have happining in this game I really think youve done a great job with the graphics.
Now im angry at your dsmart because I have to disagree with you thinking this is a whjole new game because it looks like UC but with a graphics makeover, however im glad about that because I think thats all you need is a few more graphic touches here and there and bring back that good joystick support I had in BCM and I think youll finnally reach the gold I had hoped David Braben reached but I have lost faith in him as I think hes a total screwball, not to consider releasing Elite4 is a crime. So hurry with that patch and make it known as I will be the first on line to get this new UCAWA.

yes I played the NEW demo and im impressed with the new graphics overhaul, and the control is alot better than before but I still cant control the ground vehicles with my joystick even though I can control the space ships and fighters , if I could gain control of the ground craft with my joystick Ide bolt to the store or send you my first born or something like that.
To sum it up im floored by that demo dsmart and im angry because thats what i expected to get when i bought into UniversalCombat the first time but its ok because you seem to keep at it no matter what you keep improving this game but you really need to fix the joystick thing on the planets so I can control my craft then also I see you have addresed every thing I have mentioned over the past with this game, I was the one who suggested the random wildlife , birds, fish, animals, floating clouds on the planets ect and I see you have addresed these things.
Yes there was a error on my part on the rateing of X3 that was a anticipated rateing based on what I have read about it but noone the less its no secret I wont be buying X3 but will be probley purchasing UniversalCombat based on that NEW demo I saw. X3 is being touted as a X2 1/2 so I rated it a little lower then X2 based on my love for cockpit graphics and they also have mentioned the space combat still sucks so I gave it that rateing but I was still on the fence at the time of buying the damn game anyway because im a space junkiee but i have since changed my mind based on alot of what I have read today.

Oh well what can I say I tried the original Battlecruiser3000ad w while ago and liked it alot it even had cockpits and stuff in it, boy what a game , even though it was hard to learn but it was a facinating game idea.
Note I said Idea, lol that because it imo or you didnt have the budget to finish it and make the planets more complete.
Oh yes I bought BCM but still so many planets and the citys were all lego block looking and very small and to spread out so it got BORING real quick on the planets even in BCM but I still had marginal fun in space with all the ships and options.
UniversalCombat I also purchased this game thinking dsmart with a little funding thrown at him would surley know what would make his game jump out and be a GOOD game finally esp after making the huge leap from Battlecruiser to BCM, I had high hopes, but they were DASHED.
When I bought Universal Combat and saw the SAME City graphics they used 2 games ago albiet a little air brushed and repainted but still the same LEGO comodore64 graphics for the citys. ok ok I said "I'll look past it" is what I said, but then the joystick routine was screwed up and couldnt be configured for what I thought was a industry standard joystick "Logitek wingman or my rumblepad" total mess, no way to do simple stuff like configure all 11 of my buttons to control simple things like rader ect... so I had to fumble btwn moving with the stick and frantically pressing the keyboard , all the time trying to learn a very daunting game universe like this is unacceptable.
Bad enough you have to get to grips with all the different controls and rules but when the controls cant be conviently configured you just totally make it hard for anyone to really enjoy this title accept for the ppl who dont mind playing strictly with the keyboard, which for me a space game should be controled by a joystick at least the craft should be.
Yeah yeah I hear ya you have the same joystick config screen as youve had since battlecruiser I think and its very broken and has been for awhile, IF you fix the joystick config stuff "afterall this is the thing most developers nail down first " DOH mabey alot of ppl would find this game more adaptable to there likeing.
For now im downloading the new demo to see what has changed and if it works with joysticks NOW be back with a update .

Dont mean to be to hard on X3 however cause I didnt even buy it yet lol, but based on my observation im gonna hold out on it for a little while.
Ive got so many games to play atm im going nuts figuring it all out , games like BF2, rFactor, Age of Empires3, Earth 2160, Civilization 4, Brothers in Arms EIB, SpaceRangers 2. all bought this year in the last 6 months even, all triple A titles, not to mention I still dable in GuildWars too, and get this im trying to break into the record industry so I am torn btwn playing games being a good husband and trying to be a rock star. omg im insane oh well at least when they bury me Ill have a huge smile on my face lol.
So I say enjoy X3 it looks amazing and the additions they made look interesting I wish I had the time to play it oh how I wish.
Top games so far this year
#1 rFactor #2 SpaceRangers2 #3 BF2 + FEAR tie #4 Civilization 4 #5 BIA EIB and Age of Empires 3 tie #6 Earth2160 #7 Farenheit AKA Indigo Prophecy #8 Based on the demo UFO Aftershock #9 Dawn of War Winter Assault #10 Dungeon Siege 2
All and all this is one of the better years I can remember in gameing cept for the year X-Com came out and I can say games are getting better with longevity and replay value, something they lost in the early ninties and have just aquired agian, it reminds me of the early days of the Amiga when there was such vast choices to be had and most of the titles were good, Dungeon Master , Elite, Ultima 3, SunDog, MULE, Dune ect... all im saying is its good to be a gamer and also good to have a great job also helps too.
