| I believe steam is optional; however the fact they said no DRM back in early development and now have an always-on internet check even for single player isn't right. Hopefully they'll reverse that for single player and do something similar to Minecraft in that regard. |

But it's hard for such an old timer Wing Commander junkie as my self to remain entirely apathetic when Chris Roberts starts making space sims again. The single player / squadron 42 aspect of the game is suppose to be very similar to past Wing Commander games. Now that they've reached the $5M stretch goal there will be 50 missions (branching) in the campaign. That for me is worth the price of admission regardless of how the persistent universe turns out. |

Most of the misgivings in this thread seem to be from not having full information.
The way it can be an MMO and not an MMO is that you have the option to host your own private server that still contains a persistent universe.
Chris Roberts: “We hate DRM, so the intention is to be DRM free. For the persistent universe you’re going to need to log with your account as we need to be the keepers of location, equipment and status for the obvious reasons. And if you want to have friends drop into your single player experience you will also have to be connected to our servers (as this is how we match make you with your friends) But you can play the single player game offline with no DRM and you’ll also be able to run your own server without any need to connect to our servers. Hope that helps!” You want the sandbox in single player or co-op with just friends? Host a private server. |

Max Payne 3: Man on Fire
Anyone else notice the plot similarities? Ex-Professional turned drunk hired to a protection detail in a foreign country where a female client gets kidnapped and he goes on a rampage to get her back. |

| Sounds like a good way to demo a game with no demo. I'll still buy the full game if I like it. While this business model may work well for the site, I see this being less sales for the publisher. |

Darks wrote on May 19, 2011, 13:30: The issues I have with the game are not just the realism, it’s the way the stupid AI sees you and kills you in one shot, and they don’t ever seem to miss. Sorry, but in real life no one kills you with one shot; they usually will shot at you missing several times before hitting their target. This is especially true when you are shooting at long range.
This is known as panic fire when in combat situations; in a fire fight soldiers usually will fire blindly at their target hoping to hit them. There really isn’t a whole lot of time to aim towards a target in a wild fire fight. This was a well know fact during Vietnam and how ammo was wasted by soldiers firing blindly and wasting ammo. This is why the M16 only has a three round bust function and full auto was removed. "Ill bet some of you didnt know that" The way the programmers have it now, it’s like every one of their soldiers are snipers without a scope. I don’t consider getting shot and dying once realism. You should go back and look at the difficulty settings in the past games. You have two different bars to play with for enemy AI. One deals with skills like their ability to observe and use tactics. Another is precision and deals with how accurately they can use weapons. Friendly AI have similar bars as well. You can get exactly what you want with the games already out and also in the stock game without having to mod it. |

Its an independent developer; they don't have the resources to fund a long term development so they have been charging. They do reward people who buy in earlier though as the price keeps going up as more gets done. I think it was only $17 when I bought it.
They aren't the only people to do this. Live for Speed is another big indie title that charges people for a "beta" although LFS charges you again for added content where M&B gives you all future updates for free.

Racing games for the hardcore simulation guys are still alive and well; it is the arcade racers who are dying off. Note how every example they list on their panel of developers is an arcade racer.

I personally have not done it, but some of my net friends have. It replaces all the string tables, briefings and overviews with english language. The spoken audio is already in english. I have a Germany copy on order and should get it in the next couple of weeks.
