58. Re: Nobel Peace Prize Dec 13, 2005, 23:13 Bunko

And that wasn't the most (or only) controversial award -- Theodore Roosevelt (1906, for drawing up the Russo-Japanese peace treaty)
Just a sidenote: I was actually gonna include Theodore Rex but my personal preferences got the better of me. He may have been an imperalist asshole but his conservation work was the first real stab at the government doing anything to protect the environment.
Looking over the list, a lot of them seem to be almost pop culture awards, and it's unclear that decades later the person was really worthy.
Perhaps you are right. They probably should be doled out a good deal after the fact. I was mostly trying to scold Creston for his harshness

Does anyone NOT feel the urge to just spit on the idiots who award this thing?
Me.

Anyone can be nominated for the Peace Prize. It only takes the behest of a semi-prominent figure, usually an academic, ex-recipient or assembly member, to earn a nomination. You think Williams was bad? Apparently Hitler was nominated for the Prize in early 1939 but his name was taken out of the pool a short while later for obvious reasons.

Many good people have won the award. I think that the well-intentioned nominations of several bad apples (eg. Arafat) should not spoil the overall meaning of the award.

9. eBay Auction and CNET Dec 10, 2005, 12:29 Bunko

The eBay article revealed something. CNET has some new thinger that I haven't seen before. The little picture-web news-ecosystem is an interesting idea. It sorta reminds me of David Gelernter's musings on the 'cyberswarm' and the 'information landscape'.

Not a clue what I'm talking about? Here: http://www.edge.org/3rd_culture/gelernter/gelernter_p1.html

It's an interesting article on the future of computing.

1. Coke Blak Dec 7, 2005, 22:19 Bunko

"... the world's No. 1 soft drink company, on Wednesday said it will launch a coffee-infused soft drink called Coca-Cola Blak in various markets ..."
What the hell does that mean? They put coffee grounds in Coke? This sounds like the worst idea ever.

Speaking of good movies, I saw Pride and Prejudice the other day and it was a DAMN good movie. I know that seeing, especially enjoying a Jane Austen movie probably is grounds for a major hit to my manliness but I do not care. The movie was just that good. The acting from everyone was great, the dialogue was razor sharp and the story not too bad for a chick-oriented kinda thing. What really makes the movie is its excellent technique and cinematography. The movie is the most technically brilliant film I've seen. Seriously. It's gorgeous. The camera work, photography, lighting, set design, scenery and score are amazingly good.

If that doesn't convince you, it's a decent date movie, it's completely PG, and it has three ingridients requisite for any classic movie: Donald Sutherland, top hats and a Scottish Deerhound.

How much are these mother-chuggers gonna cost anyway?

Not that I'm buying -- on the contrary, I'm just interested to see how much families are gonna shell out so Johnny can play the latest this Christmas.

"He fell in October 1918, on a day that was so quiet and still on the whole front, that the army report confined itself to the single sentence: All quiet on the Western Front. He had fallen forward and lay on the earth as though sleeping. Turning him over one saw that he could not have suffered long; his face had an expression of calm, as though almost glad the end had come."

I haven't really had much experience with others (I could never get WordPress to setup properly) I find that MovableType is great for running a blog. There's a small learning curve but setup is easy and once you get everything organized, you won't have to mess with much again. It's pretty easy to update as well.

The documentation is getting better all the time (quite a feat because it was good to begin with) and new updates are making things more flexible and powerful. I like it immensley. You can just do a standard basic but powerful blog system or you can tweak it into an almost CMS system. It seems to work pretty good for either. They've got some attractive templates, too, if you're not into the roll-your-own style. Plugins are widely available too.

Can anyone recommend me some really really really good headphones?
Well, in addition to the stuff Zathrus reccomends, I'd take a look at Todd the Vinyl Junkie's (http://www.toddthevinyljunkie.com/products/product.php?category=Headphones).

In particular, all the Grado Labs headphones (sold by Todd) are GREAT despite the fact that they don't block much noise at all. I own a pair of SR-60s. Definitely worth the cash. Just thought I'd pimp them a bit...

Anyway, for the noise-canceling variety, I would look into Beyerdynamic for a normal style headphone. I haven't had any personal experience with them, but they get pretty good reviews. If you don't mind earbuds, I would take a look at those made by Etymotic or Shure. Both are sold at Todd's and I hear both are pretty good.
