TSR severely mismanaged D&D, thus why WotC bought the IP. I've enjoyed products that both have made, and am somewhat looking forward to D&D Next. For the record, my favorite edition is 4th, though I've played (and extensively DM'd) every edition since the basic red box that came out in 83.

On topic, happy to hear about this. Also cant wait for more details on Obsidian's project.

Sorry to say this, but 4th edition destroyed D&D as a brand. And I'm not using hyperbole...

...it's because WOTC saw World of Warcraft and wanted in on that sweet, sweet action.

Quite a rant there. I wouldn't say 4e 'destroyed D&D as a brand.' It has been relatively successful in an era were RPGs around the world are seeing diminished sales. That doesn't mean it isn't great, in many ways.

And I see this 'WotC just wanted to hop on the WoW bandwagon' but I can pretty immediately tell that anyone who says that has barely touched 4e because it only has a cursory resemblance to WoW. It's a highly tactical, group based dungeon runner RPG. For what it does (combat and tactical play) it is unbeaten by any edition. It was for this reason that my group considers it our favorite edition, and many of them have been playing with me since 2nd edition. I started in Basic and have DM'd ever since. It is real combat focused RPG, with very little on the RP or non-combat mechanics, etc. But frankly if we get in the mood for good RP, deep story and setting, we play WoD which has always outdone D&D in that dept. I personally enjoy WoD 'more' than D&D. In particular I think W:tF and C:tL are my faves. We play a fair bit of V:tR as well. Cant wait for the WoD MMOG.. even if it is set in old WoD setting (using largely nWoD rules). Also real excited for 3rd edition Exalted.

That's not to say it doesn't have its problems. I totally agree with you on the Errata. And as well with D&DN, so far it's a big 'meh'. Doesn't keep some of the great things 4e added to the game and seems to be half-assing the attempt to bring back the 'feel' older editions by re-introducing things like a class-specific attack bonus and spell saves (when I think most would agree the NAD system is superior.)

In the end to each their own. I've had folks in my group over the years who didn't enjoy 4e, but I've also had folks who hated 3/3.5 with a passion. As a DM I cant say I thought it was that great an edition myself lol. To much a pain in the ass for DMing. In the end folks will play what they want to play. If D&DN doesn't work out, my group with still be playing 4e.

News Comments > Skyrim Dragonborn DLC "Early Next Year"
3. Re: Skyrim Dragonborn DLC Dec 3, 2012, 21:30 Fion

Sucks having to wait but I don't mind. This time of year I don't have an extra $20 to throw around anyway lol.

From videos, this at least looks better than Dawnguard, which I was rather disappointed with. The vampires were powerful but useless half the time, were limited. For example, couldn't use items in vampire 'mode'.. wtf? That and most the quests were based in samey cavern areas. This one at least is a whole new land mass (inspired by Morrowind a bit by the looks of things). New mobs, new areas, new items & spells (and wizard robes which the base game seriously lacks), ride-able dragons.. pretty sweet.

I just hope we can ride dragons in Skyrim itself as well.

We all know Crytech that Crysis 3, just like Crysis 2, will still look worse than Crysis 1. Lower texture resolution, lower polygon count per asset, lower overall poly cap per scene.
Given that Crysis 2 includes DX11 tessellation, it obviously has a higher polygon count.

Actually it's the opposite. That's the point of tessellation, to add depth to an asset without increasing it's poly count.

I do agree that video looks good, but with videos you can never really know if that is the quality we'll get in the actual game. What machine was it recorded on? Is it even real time? What bells and whistles did they use that isn't on by default. If anything Crysis 1 shows how many things you could do to improve it that were built right into the engine but never activated.

The simple fact is that this game, like Crysis 2, was made primarily for consoles and they simply are incapable of running a game with the fidelity of Crysis, so the engine was toned down significantly and various tricks of lighting and newer techniques like tessellation used to produce the illusion of superior graphics. But compared side by side, it's astoundingly obvious how lower quality everything 'but' the lighting is in Crysis 2 and 3.

Oh come now 'latest Dx11 graphics card' and 'latest quad core cpu'? We all know Crytech that Crysis 3, just like Crysis 2, will still look worse than Crysis 1. Lower texture resolution, lower polygon count per asset, lower overall poly cap per scene. The only thing Crysis 2 improved was the lighting engine and Crysis 3 looks pretty much identical.

All those screenshots show my point. Everything is higher resolution and poly count in Crysis 1. Compare that C1 jeep to C2 jeep, the differences are astounding.

The only reason Crysis 2 and 3 appear better in some ways is the improved lighting engine. Frankly in Crysis 1 they skimped on lighting largely so the game would run on systems of the time heh.

35. Re: Notch on 0x10c Subscriptions Nov 30, 2012, 13:24 Fion

There are so many space exploration games coming out in the next year +. Between Starbound, Star Citizen, Elite: Dangerous, Limit Theory, 0x10c is the least interesting looking to me. As much fun as I had with Minecraft, if Notch expects me to pay him a monthly fee to essentially program the game for him, he's got another thing coming. Unless I see a pretty dramatic improvement in his next video releases besides some shooter pvp in what looks worse than Quake 1 graphics, I'll not likely pick the game up.

Somewhat off subject, the above games listed all look cool but a few seem a bit overly ambitious. Star Citizen for one seems to be trying to do so many different things that I feel that the end result cant possibly live up their lofty goals. I'd rather see them put out an amazing game with 1/2 of the features than an unfocused, buggy but massive game.

If they solder the chips right onto the board and do the production themselves then they can lock out companies like Asus/Gigabyte/etc from the mobo industry altogether. A literal manufactured monopoly on the Intel PC platform.

I thought here in the US we had anti-monopoly laws? Yet somehow we have more monopolistic corporations than anywhere else in the industrialized world.

That most definitely sucks, but I'm sure that space will be filled by a different company. Some actual competition would only lead to good things. Same with the greedy fucks at M$ with Windows 8. If someone made a user friendly (and highly supported) Linux platform it could come to dominate the market and MS would either adapt or die.

Google fiber sounds interesting. Hopefully it'll spur even more innovation and more importantly, competition. The Telecom monopoly we have going right now serves no one but the corporations themselves. We need a system more akin to the UK (for a start at least).

Sadly I don't see it happening. Republicans will back their big business buddies and decry it as socialism (even though the UK system epitomizes the free market system).

I'll wait before giving any money. The game looks like it's gonna rock but the developer seems extremely ambitious and in my experience generally when ever I see a super ambitious project it ends up going in every direction but the center if you get what I'm saying. IE, they reach for so much they forget about the heart of the game and it gets lost in the flurry of cool features.

In the end I'm a bit more hyped for Starbound, but thankfully thats coming out around xmas last I heard.

QFT. I am so sick of the UE3 engine. Every game looks and feels identical because it is so prevalent.

On topic: I did a double take on the ME4. Really? ME4? I guess I should never have doubted it. But I do wonder what exactly will it be about? How can you even call it Mass Effect since the entire mass effect station network exploded and half the characters are dead? PvP only is possible, but does anyone think ME3 multiplayer was any good? Nobody I know played it past the 'oh this is new' stage. An ME game not about the games universe with a deep RP story (the ending of ME3 not withstanding) is almost unthinkable to me.

I thought I'd never see Bioware jump the shark. They are one game away from going on my blacklist, along with Blizzard.

For a tablet review from a gaming focused website you'd think they would mention the Ipad Mini has half the processing power of the Nexus 7 while costing $130 more. Their benchmark says its twice as powerful (somehow) but it too is a little funny as its marked as a 1080p resolution test but none of the 7" tablets are capable of 1080p, the Ipad Mini least of all.

Apparently even Eurogamer has iSheep.

Nice to see GW2 still selling like crazy and hanging on to #3 despite the popularity of Football Manager and MoH in the UK.

And yea.. Farming Manager #2? I'd never have guessed. Lots of folks who like to pretend they live the simple life?

You kill everything in basically 1 or 2 shots, are never in danger, there's a billion events going on, and every day with the dailies you get like 120K xp. (plus 4500 karma!!) Nine days later she was 80, and every day took me like 30 mins or so.

Playing an elementalist again, hopefully the class will sit better with me this time around.

Creston

By dailies I assume you mean the Daily Achievement, if not what dailies are you talking about lol. I do my daily achieve in Queensdale myself often because its really easy to get it inside an hour. Do note if you save several of the jugs of karma and use a Karma Booster when you 'drink' them, you get 6.7k a pop instead of 4.5k. I've gained 30k karma in the last week (and I've missed a few days)! It's awesome!

Oh and on the Ele, still need work but was buffed a bit here and there. D/D in particular the lightning whip got buffed pretty big.

Acleacius, there are a variety of websites dedicated to showing what gear looks like. So when you find something tantalizing on the market, you can go on GW2db or GW2wiki and find examples of the items. Theres even a website (I found it by searching 'GW2 dye list) that has all the dyes and what they look like on various pieces of armor.

So yes, having a preview option on the tp would be nice, so would a way to put the preview character in an active stance so you can better see small weapons. But there are tuns of ways on the web to see every single piece of armor or weapon in the game.

How can you not have it yet, Bats? No wonder the cool kids don't pick you for their team.

I hope the Xmas event is better than the Halloween one. Wasn't at all impressed with it.

To each their own Cutter but if you weren't impressed by the Halloween event I'm going to assume you only participated in Act 1. Because in whole, it surpassed every other MMOGs holiday event. I mean WoW has been known for having great holiday events but they usually consist of a few new quests that take you an hour, an achievement and if your lucky, a new boss to farm. Boring and tiny by comparison.

I had an extreme amount of fun doing the clock tower, the soft PvP and the Mad King's dungeon. I gained 10+ levels, got a whole bunch of fun stuff, a bunch of exotics waiting to be equipped, and two of the unique skins. I can only hope future events are even close to as good.

On topic, really looking forward to the Lost Shore later this month. The clues in Lion's Arch have been titillating, I'm sure it'll be great fun and if it includes even half as much content as the Halloween event did, it'll mean GW2 has had more 'free' content updates than WoW has in more than a year. Hell of a bargain if you ask me.

Speak for yourself PHJF. I've been on the dungeon level for ages, and cannot stay in game for more than a half an hour before my nerves are shot.

But I'll be sure to finish the game before this comes out. Looks fantastic.
