News Comments > Gray Matter Demo
7. Re: Gray Matter Demo Nov 28, 2010, 10:35 Mangrove

Like the look of this one. I played the GK games and loved them, apart from GK2 where they changed it to live action and replaced Tim Curry with a porn star caliber actor. And GK3 had some truly absurd puzzles, as highlighted on old man murray http://www.oldmanmurray.com/features/78.html

The plots were always entertaining, however.

Yeah, that's pretty much how I feel. But I do think it's neat that you can follow every step of development, should you wish, and how the devs and community bandy ideas about.

...If you are walking/running when you reload, something happens where you just can't do anything for ~5 seconds except move. You can't shoot or use the PipBoy. There is a mod that fixes this though.

What's the mod called? Cheers.

News Comments > Thief Source Code Recovered?
16. Re: Thief Source Code Recovered? Oct 17, 2010, 06:33 Mangrove

This makes me want to rev up Thief again, haven't played a fan mission in about a year. The last one I completed was Rose Cottage, a haunted house style mission, which was sublime.

Many of these fan created missions have a much more intricate design than the original Thief levels, and are certainly more sophisticated than most games we are used to now. It would be great if these people could get their hands on the source code and further enhance the game.

Just make sure that if you only play one FM, play Broken Triad. It's got Cthulhu in it!

Looking forward to getting back to the wasteland. I'm currently in gaming limbo now that I've finished Amnesia, and I'm starting to get withdrawal symptoms. Hopefully I'll last out these 3 weeks

I'm going to play this game naked at midnight in the most secluded evil dead 2 shack I can find and cackle and howl at my computer screen until dawn.

Did anyone play the fan made Broken Sword 2.5? It was released in German a couple of years ago, with an English text only translation coming out later.

Started playing it and it looked pretty decent. Didn't feel quite right with everyone speaking German, so thought I'd put off until the English voice version comes out, if it does, that is

Hes going to find some gruff old pro in a far flung saloon, and yes, he will make nasty dusty love to himself. All the time quietly crying soft tears onto his ps3 controller.

Oh & you'll never guess where the "dying" voice sample was eventually used.

News Comments > Mafia II Demo Patched, Contains MP Code?
16. Re: Mafia II Demo Patched, Contains MP Code? Aug 12, 2010, 06:51 Mangrove

Looking like a great game, but there are a few things that rankle me.

For us poor souls that prefer first person driving: you can't look around you, which makes pulling out on junctions pretty hit and miss. And the bonnet pops up all the time like in gta4, but unlike in gta4 when you break, it doesn't slam shut again.

Also, the crosshair is gigantic and could do with being about half the size.

Hidden & Dangerous 2 was for me a fantastic gaming experience.
Some of the best WWII action to ever grace the PC.
Land mark game mostly over looked because most reviewers found the movement a bit clunky & sulked.

Yeah it was a very good game. AI could be a bit dodgy, but it always is when you have to lead a team. I loved the mission where you had to scuba dive into the fort boyard-esque place and take out the artillery battery. Haven't played it in years actually. Might have to give it a whirl while I'm waiting for Mafia II

Yeah, the alpha is only for the special edition people. There's a thread on the forums telling you how to upgrade from the standard to the special here:

http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/index.php?showtopic=110098

You might be cutting it a bit fine, though.

I went for the standard edition as I'm a cheap bastard.

Even Goldeneye was only good if you were a console-only gamer and were like "FPS WHA?"

I don't know about that. It was pretty innovative. At the time fps games were just about charging around killing monsters. In Goldeneye you were actually up against humans and could sneak around them if you wanted, going for silent kills and avoid tripping alarms. It predates even Thief for stealth mechanics. The objectives were pretty varied and could be done in a different order and weren't just key hunts like quake2 or whatever else was out at the time. Plus it had outdoor areas, which was something you didn't really see in fps games either.

Great thanks now I had to reinstall the first one. Why is there no HD package like for all other old good games?

I favour the directx 10 renderer http://kentie.net/article/d3d10drv/ and the new vision mod http://www.moddb.com/mods/deus-ex-new-vision/downloads/deus-ex-new-vision-public-beta. And don't forget to add widescreen..

News Comments > Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light Announced
5. Re: Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light Announced Mar 4, 2010, 12:28 Mangrove

Hope it will be out on PC. I've enjoyed playing the three recent iterations, even Underworld, with it's dodgy motorbike controls.

Funny, in Underworld you have the option to pick a Tranquillizer Dartgun instead of the usual array of shotties, smgs etc. So you can theoretically just KO all the precious endangered species, letting them wake up with you long gone. Trouble is you only had about 10 darts for it and a tiger took most of these to take down. And then 10 secs later woke up again just as pissed off with you, maybe more so.

Needless to say after that little realisation I ditched the hippy approach, tooled myself up, and went to war with those furry little fuckfaces
