I can't believe 16,000 people paid a penny. Quality is subjective but a fucking penny? Apparently games are not worth anywhere near as much as people blow on lunch on every day. Hell going by these results a number of retards think a stick of gum is worth more than this game. People suck.

So much more insulting to the developer to pay a penny rather than just steal it.

For all purchases of around 30 cents and under, we actually saw no money, PayPal took it all, but they probably ended up losing money on most of those transactions ($0.01) as well, they’re not the bad guy.

This game was easily worth $10-$15, if you liked the demo. Indy development is never going to lead to revolutions in the mainstream games if we don't support the good ones. It takes hugely successful games to get the attention of the big publishers, who are content to churn out the next Madden/GTA/Rock Band because they're proven money makers.

Cryptic has no spinoff/cousin companies, unless you want to count Paragon studios which was formed by NCSoft when they purchased CoH/CoV from Cryptic. As that studio hasn't done more than continue live support for CoH/CoV to date it's pretty specious to make predictions of what they will or will not be capable of doing in the future.

NetDevil did Auto Assault for NCSoft. That partnership ended when AA ended. They've never been associated with Cryptic, other than both were independant developers working on an MMO for NCSoft. By that logic, ArenaNet and Guild Wars should also be lumped in.

Or for that matter, since Cryptic worked for Microsoft (Marvel Universe Online) and is now owned by Atari, you could lump all of those publishers games in with it and any 3rd party developers who have ever worked for them as well.

At the end of the day, the beta test will determine whether this game is going to succeed or not. All of the hype is meaningless and most people don't even know who makes what or what the difference is between a developer and a publisher.

Same here. I haven't even played the new survival mode or campaign maps and still felt like I got my money's worth from the original.

Only thing that's preventing me form pre-ordering this right now is that I'm really hardcore into Aion, and just don't know if I'll have time to play it. I bought another copy of Fallout 3 a while back (let by brother have my original) with the intent of playing the new DLC, and that thing is still sitting in the shrink wrap.

I'm sure I'll break down and pick it up eventually. Once everyone in the office starts telling war stories over lunch like they did for the original.

Dev, It's not a required update for servers. So if server don't update...

Hush you, it's more fun to insinuate that developers are lazy and incompetent than the community being full of asshats.

Again, when some servers have a queue and others don't, the problem is not a lack of servers...it's an over-concentration of players on one particular server.

Adding more servers won't fix a queue on popular servers. Adding the ability to transfer to a less-populated server will. Until all servers have a queue...only then is adding new servers helpful.

Eve is specifically designed around trading real world currency for in game currency, and that makes a huge difference

As for Aion, I can't speak for the rest of the world, but I don't currently buy gold from the farmers. It's against the spirit of the game, I don't want to support them being in the game spamming everyone, and I'm not about to give personal info to those jackasses.

However, if NCSoft sold in game currency, that would eliminate most of my compunctions about not purchasing gold and I would most definitely be buying a big chunk of it. And I can't help but believe there would be a lot of other players who would take advantage of that as well. Some to much more extreme measures that I personally could ever afford.

Something might go for 50k on the auction houses now with the black market of gold trade. If that market were to become more mainstream, those prices would have no where to go but up. Possibly to the point where anyone not spending additional, real-world money on virtual currency would not be able to afford anything from the player markets by simply playing the game as designed.

This simply isn't true. They're just very careful about protecting paying customers, and it's very difficult to separate spam-bots from paying customers in an automated way. It has to be automated, because like spam email, the volume is simply too high when pitting hundreds, thousands, or perhaps tens of thousands of dedicated RMTers against the finite resources available to NCSoft. And when it comes down to do the GMs spend their time helping players out with bugs, being stuck, corrupted characters, etc. or spending their time deleting "asdfasdfa" and "fdsdfs"...I'd rather they didn't.

I've witnessed other MMOs attempts to curtail RMT in games, very often to the detriment of the game itself. Yes, placing limits on chat or restrictions on trial accounts does hinder them a bit, but it has a much larger impact on legitimate players or the community as a whole. I found Aion's restriction from using the global channels until level 5 pretty frustrating as a player. I'm sure the RMTers don't bat an eye at it. They can pop out a new serial code with a keygen, and have a random spam-bot leveled up to 5 in a matter of hours. All part of business as usual for them.

Personally, I've found it very easy to just right-click on the name of someone spamming a channel or whispering me and add them to my block list. I do that 2 or 3 times a night and the problem becomes pretty non-existent for me. In fact, I see much more spam from players complaining about the spam (that I no longer see) than actual spam. The only thing I would want NCSoft to do would be add a "block as spammer" option, that would at least automatically generate a list of potential spammers for them to take action on.

Ultimately, there's as much chance of stopping gold spammers as stopping email spam or pop-up ads. The only way I could see it every stopped would be to undercut the market and sell it directly themselves. It would be difficult for a RMTer to sell 1mil gold for $15-$20. But legitimizing RMT would really throw the fragile economies of these games into utter havoc.

It's not the simple problem/solution that you make it out to be.

The flip side of that is that the "server" is a big part of community for an MMO, and not having those homes make it difficult to bring disparate people together into a larger communal group.

Many CoH players fiercely identify and bond with their servers and server-mates. Even people with wildly different game playing styles (PvP, PvE, etc) will still somewhat get along because they're at least part of the same server.

'Retcon' in the comics is when a current writer changes details about a character that have been previously set down by older creative personnel. I don't see how that has anything to do with what people do in MMOs.

Really, you don't see how a system for changing a character's powers and abilities in a super-hero MMO has to do with the term "retcon"...

Or was that sarcasm?

For those of you still playing, please keep us informed of when this game gets out of the 'pay for beta' stage.

I really want to check it out again 6-12 months from now. Hopefully by then everything will have settled and they'll actually have enough content and zones for it to be compelling to me for more than a couple of weeks.

No one else is disturbed by this? Instead of debuffing damage, they buffed it?

Yes, it's a simple mistake...perhaps they typed 5.0 instead of 0.5, but honestly don't they test this? Especially something as targeted as that. You don't just fiddle with critter damage on a global scale and then not actually take the extra few minutes to check your work in game.

Then for it to go through the PTS, be reported as a bug, and still end up being promoted to live?

There's just no excuse for this. It's incredibly sloppy or abhorrently lazy. Same sort of stuff they would pull back when they were working on CoH/CoV, prior to Issue 8. The AV regen buff being a prime example.

I have that happen with the normal super jump too.

Probably compounded for me having a massive scaled character. I would sometimes spend 10-15 seconds trying to work my way out of a tree I'd jammed myself into.

Strange how two people can react so completely differently to the same thing though, because I absolutely love being able to jump to get around. I get caught in the trees sometimes too, but I love the landing effect, the sound it makes, the crack on the floor, and the way the character drops to one of his knees to absorb the impact.

You feel absolutely badass, like if there were a group of mobs in the area, they'd be thrown in all directions. Of course, because they've currently buggered up how hard the mobs hit for, that's when you get completely owned, but up until that point, you feel fantastic

It's a very gratifying travel power, for a while. But after using it to travel around for a while it's the little things that make it unappealing. Like not being able to just hold down the space bar and continue jumping, issues with getting wedged into trees, that slight hesitation and stickiness when you land, and the sound effects which become grating pretty quickly...it just loses a lot of it's luster after a while.

I still prefer the super-jumping in Prototype for it's visceral appeal.

There is a certain 'less than the original' quality to the word clone, and when someone makes a game like Tower Defense, but does it much better...then clone might not be the best term.

If we're going to distinguish between RTS and TBS, then a 'tower defense' like game might warrant it's own genre. It doesn't exactly have some of the resource collection, goal oriented gameplay, and micromanagement elements that are so associated with a simple RTS.

There's more considerations for trial accounts than 'taking time'. I've seen un-managed trials almost destroy an MMO, with an influx of RMT accounts, multiple accounts used for exploiting, harassment, etc.

Giving non-customers anonymous access to an MMO is very much a double edged sword.

Couldn't make a tankmage so you're packing up and going home?

Yeah, a Tankmage would really help me enjoy being forced into tooling around in 3 modestly sized zones and not being able to retcon out of a travel power because it's so far down the list I'd be blowing all of my money just trying to work my way towards it.

Oh, if only I were completely invulnerable and could launch nukes out of my ass...that would make the tiny, shallow little world so much bigger and completely alleviate the fact that rocket jump--which was so fun in the power house and desert--gets me tangled up in the city treetops every block or so!
