12. Re: No subject Feb 7, 2007, 00:16 MeatForce

the best looking water effects I've ever seen in a game...on any platform.

If you're talking about the 360 version, then I have to agree -- the updated shader they wrote for the water in that version was fucking insane.

I really can't describe how much I hated the Trigens though. Far Cry was a great game up-to - and except for - the Trigens. I have no faith that Crysis will be anything but another pretty engine simply because of how utterly bad those enemies made Crytek's last game.

I hope I'm wrong, but they're on probation with me.

All I've got to say is this one better not end like Red Faction 1. That was possibly the most rage-inspiring ending I've ever seen in a game.

QFT!!!

That was seriously the lamest ending I have ever experienced in a game, and not just because of the insanely bad cutscene that plays (although that's right up there with Q4 as being a true LOL-what-the-fuck?!?! moment), but simply because they ended a fucking shooter with [sst]a disarm-the-bomb puzzle!!![/sst] And a stupidly easy one at that!!

I remember calling up a buddy and making him come over to play the last level just to see the look on his face when he got past that part and the credits rolled, LOL!

On the other hand, it was kinda perfect in a way, since until that point, I thought Red Faction was one of the worst shooters I'd ever played and was just waiting for it to do something really cool with the GeoMod tech (or even use the friggin' GeoMod tech, FFS) and redeem itself somewhat.. but nope: So BAD!!

I welcome the ball sweat humidity. I sleep better and my skin loves it.

.. so I guess you just sorta slather the ball sweat on before you go to bed, or something?

I'm thinking Mrs. xXBatmanXx is wise to resist moving to any climate that encourages that sort of behaviour

2. Re: Editors not sold on Vista Feb 1, 2007, 11:21 MeatForce

I'm not sure how any gamer can be convinced to use Vista until there are comparisons between a DX10 game under Vista and the same game using DX9 under XP. Game performance certainly hasn't sold me yet and with a 7800GTX, there's no reason for me to upgrade until I replace my video card.

I really don't see a need to yet either..

Was reading an article about DX10 over at Firing Squad in which Tim Sweeny had some very enlightening things to say about the whole issue.. here are a couple of choice snips:

FiringSquad: Is there anything in DirectX 10 that you couldn’t do in DirectX 9.0?

Tim Sweeney:
Realistically, DirectX 10 doesn't introduce fundamentally new capabilities, but brings many new features that will enable developers to optimize games more thoroughly and thus deliver incrementally better visuals and better frame rates.

If you look at the long-term graphics roadmap, there have only been a few points where we've gained fundamentally new capabilities. The most visible was the move from DirectX 6, 7 and 8, which in practice were fixed-function, 8-bit rendering APIs, to DirectX 9 with programmable shaders and support for high-precision arithmetic. Most of the in-between steps have brought welcome but incremental improvements, and DirectX 10 falls into that category.

...

FiringSquad: Based on what you’ve seen with DirectX 10, do you think it will be easier for game developers to program for than DirectX 9 was? If yes, which features really stand out?

Tim Sweeney:
You can't really use the word "easier" in conjunction with supporting DirectX 10. Because it's only available on Windows Vista and not XP, all developers who support it will have to continue supporting DirectX9, and henceforth maintain two versions of the rendering code in their engine. It's worth doing this, and we're doing it for Unreal Engine 3. But, far from making our lives easier, it brings a considerable amount of additional development cost and overhead to PC game development.

...

FiringSquad: We know that Unreal Engine 3 was largely developed with shader model 3.0 in mind, but do you plan on adding any DirectX 10 aspects into Unreal Engine 3 and ultimately Unreal Tournament 2007 or is that coming in UE4?

Tim Sweeney:
Unreal Engine 3 will make full use of DirectX 10, and many of our and our partners' games will ship in 2007 with full support for DirectX 10 and Windows Vista. But, despite the marketing hype, DirectX 10 isn't all that different from DirectX 9, so you'll mainly see performance benefits on DirectX 10 rather than striking visual differences.

...

FiringSquad: We know that the first games that are capable of taking advantage of some of DX10’s features will ship next year. But how long do you think it will take before games require DirectX 10? When should gamers really care about this new API, when will it really begin to affect them?

Tim Sweeney:
Requiring DirectX 10 is tantamount to requiring Windows Vista, and we have a lot of historical data we can use as a guide to such transitions. 2006 is the first year where it became economical for developers to ship games that don't support Windows 98 and Windows ME, which implies that an operating system has a 6-year lifespan.

Vista will ship in 2007, so mainstream games that require it should start appearing in 2012 or 2013. So much can happen in that kind of time period that we ought not even consider it.

Sounds to me like it'll be pretty safe to pass on this round, given that so many upcoming games are going to be using his tech.... and given that I haven't even booted up my Windows machine in a dog's age, I'm thinking the next console I buy will be my point-of-entry into the world of DX10.

MS might very well get my money at that point, but so far Vista can kiss my ass.

that just leaves GW...

Ah! Well if it's really just GW, I bet you'd be perfectly fine with only 128MB of graphics RAM -- except for possibly in crowded districts, but that's hardly a big problem, and easy to fix by just going to the last one in the list (which I always found to be much nicer in GW anyway).

TBH, I think the smaller screen - and thus lower native resolution - would be a better match for gaming on that X1600 anyway..

EDIT: Oh yeah -- Happy Birthday to: ME!!

3. Re: No subject Jan 31, 2007, 11:42 MeatForce

Yo Macheads,

I'm looking at this...

Hmmm... kinda skimpy on the graphics RAM at only 128MB.

Since the video cards are hard-wired into those, I think I'd bite the bullet and go for the 20"/2.16Ghz

That way you already have the 250GB drive, you get a slightly faster processor and a nicer screen, but most importantly, you can bump the graphics to 256MB.

If you also get the 2GB of RAM (which is a good idea), it's another $300 out of the wallet all together, but I'd imagine you'll be happier with that for longer if you're planning to install Windows and do any gaming.

If you only want it to run OSX, then disregard that and go with your initial pick -- 128MB of graphics RAM is plenty.

I was hoping they would provide some special gamerpics or something

I think they should allow you to use any of the achievements you've unlocked as your gamerpic.

Not as part of this rewards rumour, just in general -- some of those icons are pretty nifty looking, and I think it would really allow people to differentiate themselves online.

This game has already got a buzz around it

Well it's like they say: You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar, but you can catch the most with a steaming dog turd.

Honestly -- who cares if they don't make another ep? EP1 was junk. In all likelihood, the rest of the series would have been as well.

We don't need any more mediocre drivel to play.

Well, obviously the developers aren't going to say, "Yeah, we dumbed down this game to cater to a mainstream audience. Money is everything, after all." The only way to find out if the game is consolized is to actually play the game.

Damn, you're right. Now if only there was a way to actually play the game....

BTW -- I see that we managed to hijack Google searches for "hammiestudios.com", but tweakbot's homepage is still #1 if you just search for "hammiestudios" ... I don't know much about this kind of hijackery, so how do we change that?

Would it be even more potent if the sig read:

That gets both versions in there plus the word homepage... muhhuuhauhahahahahaaaateehee!!
