News Comments > Creative Vista Tool
5. Re: Vista Cripples Audio/Video! Jan 23, 2007, 02:35 Duc

It's a proven fact that Vista is degrading audio & video do it it's DRM technology built into the kernel.

That's basically the worst possible conclusion to draw after reading the hardware specs for vendors, and Microsoft actually replied here:
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=07/01/21/0042202&from=rss
While I'm not a Microsoft fan and have no interest in purchasing Vista until I absolutely have to I'd be careful about labelling a speculative article as proof.

I think what pissed me off the most was the way the quests railroaded you into a solution, they appear to show a way of solving a problem (via bluff or deplomacy) but 90% of the time they either all lead to the same place or you fail them regardless.

To be fair the ultimate proponents of this style of game development are GSC game world who having cut co-op much of the dynamic plot and vehicles, some of the things that most attracted me to Stalker in the first place.

I really got a kick of titan quest after the last patch, probably because I avoided all the grief from earlier versions but I have to say I'm looking forward to the expansion.

Chris Delay's views on steam make interesting reading, for a full sized boxed game that is also going to brick and mortar stores Steam just doesn't seem to make sense - the same product will likely come with more stuff and it'll just keep getting cheaper while steam prices stay static, however as a tool for delivering indie content it seems to work well for both sides.

However you can't say the same for the second hand games on steam for example Jagged Alliance 2 was shipped to steam broken and missing bits they advertised as present, I really don't know why no one kicked up a stink about that because it was everything the naysayers ever warned about comming true.

Batman: at least we can be sure thanks to their previous assurence of 'less bugs' that the disconnect issues will not be in the version shipped... Right?

That's pretty much priced me out of a steam purchase, about £4 more than the online retail cost of the game in the UK once you factor in the fee for currency conversion - really $50 seems too high for a digital download copy of the game.

<insert typical rant about valve lieing about consumer savings here>

I know, it's actually Arcane and Ubi

Plus the vast majority of video cards do on chip decoding for a variety of sources, the new EPIA via integrated mainboards for example have built in HD encode/decode stuff, and if not just grab an apropriate card for less than £100 / $150

Flashverts built into the pages are pretty annoying, I fully expect them to embedd something in the Navigation JS next so that you can't use a website and still block the adverts

Zeph and the rest:

Vista is apparently split into 32 and 64 bit versions just like XP, and like XP the 64 bit one will most likely not be worth bothering with.

Article explaining the difference:

There are some really choice sound bites in that article; what I found especially interesting was his comments on tribes and system shock; sadly it makes it sound like EA is mostly just interested in burying the series.

Psychonauts (for it's flaws) I really really enjoyed, good to see that despite it not being a run away success they're still making games.

Is there any pressing reason to run the areo-glass interface? I assume the basic business desktop will still get dx10 and seeing as I work and game on the same machine I don't have any pressing need for a 3d rendered application interface that'll close windows with a ripple effect and all that other needless shit.

Also when I searched for Vista on amazon a couple of links down was the DVD 'Kill Bill' :-)

It's really nice to hear they are making a proper job of customizing twilight princess for the wii controler; it may be a bit fannboy of me but this is still the only 'next gen' console I am even remotely excited about and plan on owning.

Last time I checked $84,000 a month in ad revenue wasn't exactly what they had in mind when the wrote up fair use.

Fair Use wasn't some hippie radical pinko ideal, after all.

Damn those corporate bastards for reselling the heartfelt spanish-american romcom cuture back to the swedes who made it great!

That was speculation from joystiq http://www.joystiq.com/2005/11/08/playstation-3-wont-play-used-games/ based on a us patent, it was debunked by direct contact with sony by several sites including the guardian newspaper http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/games/archives/2005/11/15/sonys_clampdown_on_secondhand_games_updated.html
and if memory serves correct gamespot.

Impressive and intriguing. I wonder how long before his technology is adapted for commercial use

Probably a long time given that only one grad is working on it at present and they've not actually got transistor behavior yet - although it's expected "soon".
