Bah Steam being a PITA since this update. It oculdnt find connection so I had to delete clientregistry.blob, which it took ages to re-download and now it's barely got any connection for the Civ V update (yeah I tried resetting the DL location).
Damn, I never should have restarted after that update. It connected right up when I started it a little while ago, but now after it downloaded the new client I can't connect at all now.

1. The Dirty Little Secret Of Inkjet Printers Oct 1, 2010, 21:47 jimnms

I hate inkjet printers. Except for being a cheap initial purchase, they are more expensive in the long run. I bought a multifunction laser printer/copy/scanner about 4 years ago. It was $120 (-$20 MiR) and the starter toner cartridge that it came with didn't last but about a year. A replacement toner cartridge was $60, and it's good for ~5000 pages.

I think I paid $80 for my last inkjet printer. It was a color printer, but I never print in color. A blank ink cartridge was $30. I don't remember how many pages they were good for, but it was nowhere near 5000. If you didn't use it much, the ink cartridges would dry out in about 3 months, so I was spending at least $30 every three months regardless of how much I printed.

Hopefully this won't be hugely buggy and largely unsupported with patches like Fallout 3 was. Oh wait, Bethesda and Obsidian...

I've still got hope as I really liked Fallout 3 when it wasn't freezing and crashing or refusing to work on Windows 7 unless you shut Aero off.
Huh? Didn't Fallout 3 have 7 patches? And it works just fine on my system with Windows 7 64bit without turning Aero off.

Like Fallout 3, the children will likely be unkillable, but except for a few essential NPC's, everyone else can be killed. If you're get it for the PC, you can use the console to make them killable if that is your thing.

News Comments > Civilization V Patched
17. Re: Civilization V Patch Sep 28, 2010, 02:45 jimnms

I hope they have all of the problems worked out by the time I get this (after I finish Fallout: New Vegas). Honestly, I didn't really like Civ IV as much as I did Civ III. In Civ III I remember having lots of small conflicts early on once the borders began to bump up against each other in Civ III, and seeing other civs fight each other more often with a few large scale wars between multiple civs.

The AI in IV seems way to passive. I played one game to see how far I could get without much of a military. I kept my military to 2 units per city. I was a total ass to every civ, I wouldn't open my borders or trade with them. I don't remember there being any conflicts between any of the other civs, and it was after the gunpowder age before one of the civs finally decided to attack me.

One thing I would like to see is a way to fight over land/borders rather than the borders changing due to culture. If there is a resource you want/need, I wish there would be a way to fight over the land and take control. The only way to do that now is to destroy their city and buy the tile or wait for your culture to grow enough to expand your border.

Well, I am an old fart (over 30 years old!) and grew up with these old RPGs. However, I never got into those games (Eye of the Beholder, Ultima, Bard's Tales, Baldur's Gate, etc.) since I don't like to read, wait, etc. I do like action RPGs like Diablo, World of Warcraft, etc. Ironically, I did enjoy KOTOR1. I am more of an action guy.

Pool of Radiance and Eye of the Beholder are the two games that got me into RPGs, but I never played Ultima. I remember a friend of mine bought them, but his family's computer couldn't run them, so I traded some stuff for them since we had a blazing fast 25MHz 386 DX at my house.

I don't remember them coming with much of a manual. It had a little code wheel thing, state of the art DRM for that day. I remember putting hours/days/months into those games and not beating them. I used graph paper to map out the dungeons in EotB, but there was a level with traps that you would fall down to different levels or it would teleport you to another area, which just screwed up my maps.

I don't know or have never personally known what it is like to work at Walmart, but I remember a few years ago (98-99ish) that Walmart seemed to be pretty good to its employees. I lived in a little town and remember a few people I knew then took part time jobs there because they offered great benefits that their local full time jobs didn't.

News Comments > GOG.com Re-launch Tomorrow [Updated]
41. Re: GOG.com Re-launch Tomorrow [Updated] Sep 22, 2010, 16:37 jimnms

First of all, I never would have known about this stunt had it not been a news story here. I've bought 7 games from them, which are backed up on DVD and an external HD, so I don't have to re-download my games to install them or in case the service goes down. I only go to the gog.com site when I get their emails about sales or new games.

But this was an incredibly stupid move, especially since they "shut down" just days after having a sale. I imagine they probably lost a few potential new customers who happened to hear about GoG at the "right" time, only to find a message indicating they are shutting down when they went there for the first time. Whoever at GoG thought of this and those that thought it was a good idea should be fired.

As long as they keep selling DRM free games, I doubt that any existing customers will be that pissed off to quit doing business with them. I bet they'll offer a few free games or some coupons to existing customers and most will forget about it.

News Comments > Civilization V Manual
17. Re: Civilization V Manual Sep 19, 2010, 09:19 jimnms

Even though it's a Steamworks game, does the boxed version come with a printed manual?

This is making it hard to resist. Civ V and Fallout: New Vegas are the only two new games I've been looking forward to all year, but it's pointless to get both at the same time. You really can't play both at the same time, and since Civ V never really ends, I decided to go with New Vegas and pre-ordered it a month ago. I'm also trying to finish one more play through of Fallout 3 before New Vegas arrives. I figured by the time I finish New Vegas, I might can get Civ V cheaper.

Now after reading reviews and watching videos, I want to play Civ V now! I'm tempted to cancel New Vegas and go with Civ V, then I can pick up New Vegas next year after they release all of the DLC and sell it all in one box. It would be hard to put off New Vegas and not read any spoilers for it though, and it's not like there are any spoilers in Civ V.

There's the gameplay trailer. It certainly looks much more true to the original than Deus Ex 2 was.

90% of the 'true to the original' gameplay trailer is 3rd person.

The only gameplay I saw in those videos was 3rd person, except when zooming in with a scope, and a fucking consoleized cover system.

2. Mozilla halts Firefox security updates Sep 14, 2010, 22:30 jimnms

Good to know it wasn't just me that wasn't getting the update. Firefox on my desktop prompted me to upgrade. The next day I turned on my netbook, but it said there was no newer version available. I was thinking something was wrong with my netbook. I didn't see any news on Mozilla's site about the update being halted, so I downloaded and manually updated it. I haven't had any crashes on either system with 3.6.9.

Holy fuck, this comes out next week? The game I'm most looking forward to this year is Fallout New Vegas. I haven't really been keeping up with news on Civ V. I guess I'll wait and pick it up on sale during the holidays after I've finished FNV.

I tried to like "Penumbra", the other game by the "Amnesia" team. I really, really tried, but couldn't. The game would not let me finish off the zombie dogs. I fought one, took it down, but the game wouldn't let me destroy the beast. I could have stomped my feet on its head to crush it, I could have cut it off with a broken bottle, but NO, the game wouldn't let me. It was like e.g. in "Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault", where you could spot the japanese mg team around the corner, but you were not allowed to evade it or flank it, because the game wouldn't allow you to leave the path. I hate that, it's frustrating. I know, "Penumbra" and most likely "Amnesia" are survival horror games and not fps, but I hate to be stopped by the game design from doing what I would really do: if you have chance, you'll kill the zombie that is following you instead of walking away from the "unconscious" cadaver, so that it can get up again behind you and continue hunting you. Therefore: no buy. Sorry.
Penumbra is a horror adventure and puzzle game, not a FPS combat game. I remember a few instances where you were able to use the environment to trap or kill some enemies. The interface of the game isn't set up for combat, but you could pick up things and drop them or swing them and kill some of the enemies, but usually the best and easiest way was to find another without physically attacking them.

If your first instinct is to kill everything you see, and you are unable to think of alternate ways of solving the puzzles, then Penumbra and Amnesia aren't for you.

I got an email yesterday addressed "Dear pre-orderee" with instruction on how to get the game when it's released Wednesday. I was a little confused at first. I had forgotten I pre-ordered this game back in May when they were offering the pre-order at 50% off and extra content if they got a certain number of pre-orders, which I think they did. I guess I was suffering from amnesia.

It's a good thing I used my Gmail address to order the game because I deleted my local copy of the pre-order confirmation email with my order number needed to get the game.

If you've played the Penumbra games, this is made by the same people. If you haven't played Penumbra, go buy it now if you like horror adventure survival type games.

News Comments > Metro 2033 Demo
16. Re: Metro 2033 Demo Aug 25, 2010, 15:25 jimnms

I got it free with my video card too. It looks great and does have some unique qualities, but I'm glad I didn't pay full price for it at release.

I get annoyed with it and quit at times. There are a few bugs that drive me crazy. When holding the shotgun, if I try to look at my watch to check how much longer my filter will last, the screen goes blurry and I can't see the watch. The worst one is that the enemy creatures are able to pass through you. I don't know what the creatures are called, but there's one that will jump at you and one that comes up through holes in the ground. The jumping ones, when I have to deal with several of them, I backed into a corner so they couldn't attack me from behind, but they'll jump and land "in" you or somehow manage to be between you and the wall where they can hurt you and you can't hit or see them. You have to move so they're not standing in you anymore.

What has annoyed me the most so far are the filters and the use of military grade ammo as currency. The military grade ammo is more powerful, and you can load it into your weapon by holding the reload key instead of pressing it. You're basically shooting money, so I don't want to do that. I wish they would have made it a separate key to change ammo because during a firefight I accidentally held the reload key too long and loaded my "money" into the gun by accident. I had over 100 military grade rounds. I didn't realize until I got to the next station that I had used them in my gun, so I didn't have any money to buy new weapons or ammo with.

The last three stations I've been through, the vendors weren't selling filters. On the level before Polis station I ran out of filters and had to reload the last checkpoint. If you shoot an enemy in the head, it breaks his mask. I've killed some by sniping their mask and watching them suffocate. Some have a spare and you can see them switch. If you can kill them without shooting them in the face or shoot their mask off and kill them before they switch to the spare, you can take the filter from their mask, but if you shoot them in the head it breaks their mask and you can't get the filter. After reloading the checkpoint I had to kill an enemy without breaking his mask, get his filter and hurry to the end.

Now I'm at Polis station with one partial filter. The vendors there don't sell filters, and the next level is outside.
