5. Re: Can Firefox get its mojo back? Jan 14, 2011, 22:56 jimnms

Mark wrote on Jan 14, 2011, 13:05:
After reading the article I installed the Firefox 4 beta. I'm liking the new sync feature! Now I don't need to do backups of my Firefox data.

You should still keep local backups. Sync is just that, a service that allows you to sync data between devices. It's not intended as a backup service. Here is a quote from the Mozilla labs discussion group of a developer reply to someone who relied on Sync as a backup only to find out the hard it isn't and lost his data because he didn't keep a local backup:
Sync is a mechanism for exchanging data between clients (typically instances of Firefox). It's not a persistent cloud store, and it's not a backup service. It doesn't necessarily have all of your data (e.g., old history isn't uploaded), and it's not guaranteed to stick around.

There are also events that will deliberately wipe the server -- a storage version upgrade (as occurred between b7 and b8) being one of them. A wipe is a non-exceptional circumstance; clients will simply re-upload.

It's also has had recent problems of deleting bookmarks. It happened to me a couple of times last week. I use it to sync my bookmarks, passwords, history and tabs between my desktop and netbook. I had not used my netbook in several days, and when I started Firefox it must have synced up. I have my bookmark toolbar hidden on the netbook and I didn't actually look at my bookmarks, so I didn't notice anything had gone wrong. When I was back on my desktop that night, Firefox began to sync and I saw things disappearing and re-arranging on my bookmark toolbar. For some reason it restored bookmarks that I had deleted weeks ago, and it went farther and deleted bookmarks that I have had bookmarked long before ever using Sync.

I restored from a backup and forced Sync to reset and use the desktop's data, then on the netbook forced Sync to overwrite the local data with the Sync data. Whatever it downloaded from the Sync servers was still not right, it was out of order and missing bookmarks. Then when the desktop synced again, it decided to rearrange and delete things again.

That's when I found the Mozilla labs discussion group, and saw several other posts of people having similar problems. A developer replied in one of them saying that they are aware of a problem, but aren't quite sure what is causing it, so I have disabled Sync until they fix it.

I watched the "Homeless man w/golden radio voice in Columbus, OH" clip, then clicked on the Mad Men vs. Firefly link to see at the top of that page a story titled Homeless Man with Radio Voice Offered Free House, Job with the Cleveland Cavaliers. That's pretty cool.

how about disabling the acrobat plugin on your web browser? you can also set the browser to ask before opening or downloading a PDF file.

That's what I've always done, not just for safety, but I don't like PDF files loading in my browser window. I also use Foxit reader since the Adobe reader got fat. Now Foxit is getting a little chubby. I downloaded a few lighter PDF readers a while back, but never got around to installing them. One is called Cool PDF Reader, and there was another one that I can't seem to remember the name or find right now.

1. Last Day :( Jan 2, 2011, 13:54 jimnms

I'm sort of glad the sales are over after today. I think I did good restraining myself from buying a lot of games on sale since I have several games I bought over a year ago that I haven't gotten to. I'm going to add up my damages later.

It looks like today's Steam sales are repeats of previous days. The Steam page is messing up for me too. When I first went to it, it was telling me that the GTA: Complete was not available in my location. A few minutes later the sale flip book thingy was gone. It's back now, but some of the pages are blank, it just shows a price at the top corner.

I went ahead and bought GTA: IV for $5 from Amazon last night since my retail disk is messed up. I let it download overnight and tried it out this morning. It worked like I hoped, installs just like a retail disk, without the need for a disk. After that I went ahead and bought EFLC too for $7.50, just to be able to install and play without having to get out the disk. I'll probably give my disk version to a friend that doesn't have it.

Now today Steam brings their GTA: IV Complete Pack sale back for $10. I'd say the extra $2.50 spent at Amazon is worth it to just be able to play the games without having to log into Steam first. I still like Steam, but I think Amazon is my new digital distributor of choice from now on if all of their downloads work like this.

It would have been nice if the Steam "Complete Pack" had them integrated together like you'd get if you bought the episodes through GFWL. It would have added 7GB to the GTA: IV install rather than another 16GB install for the standalone EFLC. I wish Rockstar would have made a way to install the standalone EFLC into GTA: IV.

I posted a question late yesterday about Amazon Game Downloads. I bought ArmA 2: Combined Ops from Amazon, which downloaded what looks to be the contents of the retail DVD. It installed just like it was retail, and does not require a disk or connection to play. I don't think the retail version of ArmA 2 requires the disk to be in the drive anyway (it didn't with ArmA), so I'm wondering how it works for other games that would normally require a disk to play.

I'm considering buying GTA: IV and EFLC while they're on sale even though I own both on disk. My disk #1 for GTA: IV got scratched when my DVD drive crapped out and ejected it while it was spinning at full speed. It still recognizes the disk to launch the game, but I can't re-install the game because it won't read parts of it. If the GTA: IV from Amazon download works like ArmA 2, the sale price is worth it to me to be able to play them without having to get out the disk or being connected to Steam.

I love talking to myself. I answered my own question. I went ahead and took a $5 chance on GTA: IV, since my disk is damaged already. It downloaded the contents of what would be on the game disk, installed like it would if I had the disk, launches without needing a disk or connecting to a service (except the stupid SecuROM activation that you have to do with the disk version too).

I think I have found my new preferred digital download service. All the benefits of buying a retail disk, without the disk.

Has anyone ever digitally downloaded from Amazon? There's some decent stuff there. I've only used the usuals, Steam, D2D, Impulse....
I bought ArmA2: Combined Ops from them. It pretty much downloads the contents of the game disk, which you can burn to a disk if you want. Your "CD Key" is in your Amazon game library on the same page to download it. After downloading, it installed just like it would if I had bought it on a disk. No need to be online for installing or verifying. No disk is required to play either, but if ArmA2 is like ArmA and OFP, they remove the CD check after a while anyway.

I'm considering buying GTA: IV and the EFLC from Amazon since they're on sale for $5 each. Just before I built my new gaming machine, my GTA: IV disk got scratched. The DVD drive wouldn't eject it, so I used the emergency eject hole. I should have turned off the system first, but I didn't think about it. It spun the disk up just as I hit the eject mechanism, so the disk came out spinning full speed. It would still recognize the disk, so I was still able to play the game. But I checked the disk and it was damaged, so there was no way I was going to be able to reinstall when I built my new machine.

It went on sale at my local Walmart for $20, so I went ahead and picked it up. I never opened it to install after building my new machine, and now that's the regular price for it. I could probably return it since it's still sealed.

GTA: IV and EFLC do require the disk to be in the drive, so I'm not sure how the Amazon digital version works around that. If anyone knows, let me know before I waste $10. I have EFLC on disk, but I still want to play GTA: IV again on my new system.

i have this game but have not installed it yet. do we need to download and install the previous patches before applying 4.10? the previous version patch is half a gig.
The last link on the forum page is for the documentation. It says "v.4.10m installs only over v.4.09m."

If you bought it from GoG recently it should already be version v4.09. GoG updated the installer to v4.09 when that patch came out. The IL-2 1946 retail disk is v4.07, so you will need to grab the v4.08, v4.09 and v4.10 patches.

I stay away from Amazon. I saw that OpArrow was on there for 10 bucks a few days ago, but the customer reviews mentioned issues with key activations. I'm willing to pay a little extra (got OpArrow on Steam yesterday for $15.99 as I already own Arma II on there) to stick with a reputable service where I know the game will work and if not, it will be fixed quickly.
What reviews? There are 4 reviews of ArmA2:OA digital download on Amazon. Only one mentions a problem with activation, which was posted back in August. I bet he didn't look on his games/software library page on Amazon to locate the keys. It doesn't email them to you. I received an email after the purchase giving detailed instructions on how to find your game keys. Maybe they added this because so many people were having problems finding them.

A couple of friend and I bought it from Amazon, and none of us had any problem downloading or installing it. If it were cheaper on Steam, I would have bought it there, they're both fine to me.

The good thing about ArmA2 from Amazon is that you can patch it with the retail and beta patches. There is no way to use beta patches on Steam, and each time it's patched, it downloads the whole 8GB game again.

Yes those are great deals. Almost bought Bioshock 2 until I was reminded that it requires GFWL and uses securom activation.

I almost bought it until I remembered I never finished the first one, which I bought on sale two years ago. Now that I know it uses securom activation, I definitely won't be getting it.

LittleMe wrote on Dec 24, 2010, 01:11:
Edit: Apparently the amazon downloader doesn't patch games. FYI.

It looks like it downloads what is essentially the contents of the game disk. I don't know about other games, but the retail patch works on ArmA2.

Hmm... A (not-so-)short list of downloadable games I've bought in the last couple of weeks

I managed to control my impulse buying of games on sale this year unlike last year. Each time I was tempted to buy a game, I reminded myself about the games I've bought on sale that I haven't played yet.

So far I've only bought:
Battlefield BC2 (Steam)
ArmA 2: Combined Ops (Amazon)
Humbe Indie Bundle #2

That was xmas sales. For Thanksgiving/black Friday I bought:
Monkey Island 2 Special Edition: LeChuck's Revenge
Monkey Island Complete Pack

Edit: I just got an email from TTG saying the freebie is now available for download.

Edit 2: Anyone having problems trying to log into the game via the launcher? My username and password doesn't work.

I didn't get an email, and it's not showing a download link on my account.

I'm perfectly content with one large 36" 1920x1080 display, the bezels on all those monitors would be too distracting.
That might be nice for a flight simulator, but not a FPS. They had a one of the PC Fallout: New Vegas demos at QuakeCon running on I believe a 4 monitor setup. The view had to be offset slightly so that your crosshair wasn't blocked by a monitor bezel. I don't know if v-sync was off for performance reasons or that it had to be off to run on the Eyefinity, but it was very distracting. I'm used to the horizontal tearing with v-sync off (though I don't often run it off anymore), but the vertical tearing was weird to look at. Parts of the HUD was messed up because it too was behind a bezel, and worse was dealing with the dialog between NPCs.

8. Re: Ukraine to open Chernobyl area to tourists in 2011. Dec 15, 2010, 20:41 jimnms

There have been Chernobyl tours offered through Kiev for years. I'd love to go, but I wouldn't want to sit on a bus with a bunch of tourists driving by. I'd want to get out and explore offbeat areas and go inside the unfinished reactor #5 and #6 buildings.

I've had a strange fascination with Chernobyl, long before the game S.T.A.L.K.E.R. came out. I was a kid when the accident happened, but I was a news junkie then too. I was just fascinated watching what was happening around the world. I remember when the news broke here about it, and it scared the crap out of me because we live less than 30 miles from a nuke plant. I didn't understand what radiation was how far away Chernobyl was. I was scared that the radiation was going to get us too or that the nuke plant by us was going to explode.
