I'm surprised they got that much too but I'm glad to see they did! I backed at the $50 level because I wanted a physical copy and I like that it comes with a cloth map too.
I backed at the $50 level too. I want the old school box, manual and cloth map, plus you get a digital copy too, so it's two copies of the game. I just hope it's not the same type of "cloth" Bethesda used for the pre-order bonus map of Skyrim.

I've started to ask myself this when a new game comes out or is on sale: "will I play it now or will it go on my to-get-to list?" I have so many games on my to-get-to list that the answer lately has been no, so I wait.

It had been online previously. It used to be that it would be online, my internet would die, Steam would notice this, I'd click "Go offline", and it'd just go offline.

Now it seems you can only switch it manually anymore, not on-the-cuff as you used to, which is bullshit. Tried it on several computers, they all have the same issue.

Creston

My connection goes flaky from time to time, going down for a few minutes to a few hours. I leave Steam online and it notices when the connection goes down, but when it comes back up it re-connects. It even keeps track of achievements and gives me credit for them when it re-connects.

I've never tried switching offline while steam was running online and my internet connection went down, but I've been able to start it in offline mode when the connection was down.

Has anyone else had problems with Offline mode lately? When my internet went down again, I tried putting Steam in offline mode, and the stupid thing said that "This operation cannot be completed in offline mode."

What, you mean turning ON offline mode? WTF?

Looking at Steam's support forum, it seems tons of people have the same issue, and of course Valve has yet to respond to a single one of the threads opened on the topic...

I'm just going to run it offline all the time, I guess. What's the point of offline mode if it doesn't fucking work when you need it??

Creston

I had a problem a while back where Steam wasn't shutting down properly preventing me from going to offline mode. I didn't notice the problem for a while because I usually start Steam when I play a game and leave it running until I shut down for the day. I believe the problem has something to do with the Steam Cloud syncing.

When you close Steam do you get a little box that pops up that says something about finishing sync? It has two buttons, one is grayed out and the other is cancel. It usually only pops up for a split second.

Check with task manager (or better yet Process Explorer) and make sure Steam.exe and SteamService.exe stop when you close Steam. Also watch and make sure a steamerrorreporter.exe does not run when you start and stop Steam. I suggest Process Explorer because I don't think task manager updates fast enough to catch the steamerrorreporter.exe. You can configure Process Explorer to highlight new and closed processes. Set the highlight duration to 3 seconds because it runs and closes in about a second.

When this was happening I couldn't switch it to offline mode, either while it was running or during start up. I also didn't get the little popup window about syncing when I closed it, which is why I think it has something to do with the Steam Cloud sync. I didn't realize this until after I fixed it though.

Try this before fixing it the way I did it. Go in the Steam settings and turn off Steam Cloud. Close Steam and open it a couple of times before turning it on again. If that doesn't work, this is how I fixed it. Rather than close Steam the normal way, I just killed the Steam process using Process Explorer. The next time it ran, the steamerrorreporter.exe didn't run, and Steam has been shuting down properly since.

27. Re: Legend of Grimrock Patch Plans Apr 14, 2012, 17:39 jimnms

This has nothing to do with games being dumbed down. In this case the game has made something more complicated than the old school games it's modeled after.

I don't know how Dungeon Master did it, and Arx Fatalis is a different class of game since you are in control of one person, not managing a party of characters. The games I grew up playing were AD&D titles like Pool of Radiance and Eye of the Beholder, none of which required YOU to memorize spells. Once the character learned the spell, to make them cast it you select their spell book then click the spell to cast.

As it is now in Grimrock, I'm regretting bringing a mage. The other characters are leveling faster than the mage is because for the mage to attack it requires a minimum of 3 clicks to cast a spell while the others only require one click to attack. I usually cast one spell then just finish the fight with the other three characters unless I have room to retreat enough to re-select the symbols for another spell.

You're talking about a group of guys that implemented an option for "old-school mode," wherein the game does not automatically generate your map and recommends you keep graph paper at the ready... I think they'd be offended by such requests (and how tedious would it be to deselect the last spell you cast whenever you want to use a different one?). However, you do find spell tomes that you can hold on to for as long as it takes to memorize them. Or, you know, just write them down. Pen and paper is basically a peripheral for this and other types of classic games.

No, I'm talking about how even old school games like this didn't require you to memorize combinations of symbols and press them every time you wanted to cast a spell. In EOB, once your character has learned a spell, to cast all you do is click the spell book and click on the name of the spell you want to cast.

My only complaints so far are, like everyone else, the spell casting system, and that you can't use both hands to attack with. You can put different weapons in each hand, but you only get one attack and dual welding weapons doesn't seem to increase damage.

I loaded up Eye of the Beholder to refresh my memory, because I was pretty sure in EOB you could attack with each hand separately, and I was right. I also thought you equipped spells and cast them like weapons, and I was partially right. When you rest you have to pray/memorize spells. Depending on character level, you can only "load up" so many, for example you can do 4 level 1 spells and 2 level 2 spells. They can be different or the same, like 4 magic missiles, or 2 magic missiles and a 2 flame blade spells. Once you use them, you have to rest to "re-load" them.

I like that in Grimrock you don't have to rest to pray/memorize spells and can just cast until you run out of energy, but having to remember which symbol to select every time before casting is tedious. I wish it would at least remember the last spell you cast so you can continue to cast it rather than have to click each symbol every time before casting. It would be nice to have a spell book in game that you could reference to see what spells you have learned or figured out instead of having to remember them or write them down and look them up if you forget.

I finally got to play it after contacting the Almost Human and Humble Bundle support to find out why I was never sent a link to my key and download. A couple of hours after emailing them my PayPal transaction ID's they found my payment, but don't know why it didn't create a link for me. They finally sent me a gift key link until they get the problem sorted out.

I just had enough time to load the default characters and dick around the first level, then I stopped and created my custom party before I had to quit. I just finished playing the first three levels and I want more, but it will have to wait.

edit: Sorry for crapping up the launch thread. Game looks great for the 10 seconds it runs before locking my video card... I need to hurry to kill the process so that it doesn't eventually bluescreen if I let it go.
Hardware troubleshooting is a bitch. I suggest you beg/borrow/steal spare video, HD, RAM and try them one at a time to see what fixes it. You can also try a stress testing program like OCCT that can stress individual parts of the system. I had one system a while back that locked up only with one game. It turned out to be the PSU. This was before Steam, and for some reason just that one game would lock up the system during the CD check.

My previous system had a PSU go bad, and when it did it messed something up on the MB. It would run fine for months, then start giving me blue screens on start up. All I had to do was open the case, unplug the SATA cable, plug it back in and it was fine for a few months. I still have that system, it's about 6 years old (video card is 3), but it can still run some games.

Is it just the usual Paypal form letter type payment confirmation? I would search your spam folder for Humble or Grim, failing that you'll have to contact them directly

It's just the generic PayPal receipt email. I've already looked in my spam folder. I looked at everything the day of and after I pre-ordered. Someone on the official forums suggested using the key re-sender on the Humble Bundle site since the transaction goes through them, but all I got were links to past Humble Bundles I've bought. I've sent email to the the address on the Grimrock FAQ and Humble Bundle people, and I'm just sitting here waiting and a bit pissed.

Yeah, in the Humble store email you received as an order confirmation, it was present below the steam key. That's where I found mine anyway.

Funny thing is that Valve employees are playing it right now, grr! Guess Gaben has a lot on his plate Jester

I pre-ordered a week ago and the only email I got was from PayPal. I didn't get an email with any link or key.

When did you get it? All I got was a receipt from PayPal the day I ordered it.

And on the upside, 1 hour to LoG!!! Dunno why we can't preinstall it though. Oh well, I suppose it's not that a big a download but I'd rather have it ready to go for unlock.
It's time, but the LoG site is being hammered. Those of us that bought it direct from them, are they going to email us Steam keys or what. I'm going to play on Steam, but I bought it from the devs to support them and have the DRM free download option too. I wish they would have sent out the keys yesterday so we could have unlocked it on Steam at release time.

The nearest Best Buy to me is about an hour drive. There have been a couple of rare occasions where it was worth driving over because they had a cheaper price than I could find online for something, or the time my PSU crapped out on a Thursday night and I couldn't wait all weekend to have one shipped. I bought a tablet for my mother this past Christmas, and I couldn't decide between two models, so I bought both. One I ordered from Amazon and the other I bought from Best Buy because for that one it was cheaper even after tax and fuel to drive there. She ended up liking the one from Amazon, so I returned the Best Buy one. I didn't have to give them a drivers license, but I do have their stupid rewards card so they're probably tracking me that way.

While I keep reading about them closing stores, they've actually opened a new one not too long ago in the same area that already has two. All three are within a 5 square mile radius, and either is about the same driving time from me.

The verdict? Microsoft is making some really nice products these days. What it still canít do is tie all these products into a single, well-integrated ecosystem.
Last time they tried that, they got sued.

Gonna be fun!

That review is what pushed me over the fence to pre-order it. I ordered it from the developer site so I could get the direct download and Steam key.

Pool of Radiance and Eye of the Beholder were the first two cRPG's I played. I made maps with graph paper, which didn't do me any good in the lower levels when I got lost going through teleporter things and falling through traps. I'll probably wimp out and use the auto map thing, but I might try my hand at making my own maps at first.

I kind of wish Gmail Tap was real.

That's not a half bad idea. People have already practically invented a new language shortening texts, so I'd imagine hard core texters would be able to learn Morse code. Any why even need two buttons, all you need is to tap the dots and dashes on the screen, ie. you would tap and hold for a dash.

Another reason to stay the fuck off of social networking sites as much as possible. Unfortunately more and more organizations are using it as a way to get time-sensitive business-related communiques out, so it is almost a necessity in some cases.

For me, the only way I can rescue and foster dogs in time from the Memphis Animal shelter - which, sadly is not a no-kill shelter - is by reading the announcements on their Facebook. I just fostered five awesome pit bull puppies (all with homes now - WOOT!) that were scheduled to be destroyed at 5pm on the day the announcement came out on Facebook. If saving perfectly good dogs from unnecessary destruction requires a Facebook account, then I'll bite the bullet and do it. On another note, being an active musician without using Facebook page means being out of work quite a bit.

You live in Memphis? I'm just a few hour south of there, and I just drove through Memphis a couple of weeks ago on my way to St. Louis. I adopted my dog from the local humane society. He was an older dog and about to be put down because everyone wants to adopt puppies. I'd love to take in foster pets, but I just can't.

I always thought New Vegas was the buggiest of them all.

Other than the eyes on the side of the dogs head (which freaked me out a little, understandably ) I didn't see many bugs.

At launch there was the bug with the facegen that causes stutter and lag. The fix was to use a console command or the hacked dll. I used the console command, which had to be entered every time you ran the game, which also disable achievements (which I didn't know at the time).

I didn't run into many big bugs until later on. One location was so badly bugged it was known to corrupt save games. I had to re-load an earlier save, but I was lucky and caught it early and only lost about an hour. I just went about my business and wrote in my notes to go back when it was fixed.

I think they patched most of the major bugs in the end, but there are still a lot left, like two of the casino's don't return your companion's weapons when leaving. They broke Boone in the 2nd or 3rd patch, and they never bothered to attempt a fix until the last or next to last patch. He still isn't fixed and totally broken when in combat.

The community bug fix is definitely needed. I've contributed a couple of small fixes to it. I fixed one of the casino scripts, which although took a while to figure out, it turned out to be a simple misspelling causing the weapons not to be returned. Another fix I did was when I got a 12ga shotgun and converted my ammo to slugs, I noticed I wasn't receiving any empty hulls. I poked around in the GECK and saw that it defined the percent of shell recovery but not what type of empty shell to give you.
