WOOT, it finished with just over $330k!!! I was keeping an eye on it with 10 minutes to go. Right at 5 minutes to go it was on $295k, then I hit F5 and it was over $330k.

Just noticed that the Ground Branch KS is going to end in about a day too. Looks like they're not going to make it. Bummer.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/670743543/ground-branch

I think what's hurting them is that it's MP only. If it were MP coop like R6 or SWAT 3/4 I'd be all over it. Since it's just basically team DM, it's going to end up playing out like a game of Counter Strike or America's Army.

Just launched "Orcs Must Die" in off-line mode. So, either they fixed it or it isn't a universal Steam issue.

Were you already offline, or were you able to go offline after being online today? My notebook has been in offline mode for months and it still works, but I tried just now on my desktop and I still get the error when I try to restart in offline mode.

1. Steam Problems Today? Jul 4, 2012, 13:26 jimnms

I always put Steam in offline mode before I run a backup, but today I get an error saying that "Offline Mode is unavalable because there is no Steam login information stored on this computer." It worked fine when I backed up last week, and I don't recall there being any Steam client updates since then. A few days ago I was having another problem, don't even remember what, but it was something to do with getting a game to run. I do remember that after a searching, the fix was to delete the ../steam/config/config.vdf file. When I did that and restarted Steam I did have to re-login and enter the Steam Guard code, so I was thinking that broke something. I was going nuts trying to fix it. I was just about to re-install Steam when I grabbed a friend online and asked him to try going offline and he got the same error.

Can anyone else get Steam to go offline today? There are a few posts on the Steam forums about it, so it's looking like a Steam problem.

5. HL2 Mod Jun 30, 2012, 21:02 jimnms

I played some of the No More Room in Hell mod yesterday. I'm pretty sure I saw this mod here a while back before it was released. I had bookmarked it and then stumbled on it yesterday. It's a bit like L4D in that it's you and some survivors vs. zombies, but unlike L4D most of the zombies are slow moving. There are some fast ones, and creepy little kid zombies. Weapons and ammo are scarce too. It needs some tweaking, the zombies take way too many hits to kill. Sure they're not fast moving like L4D, but even slow ones in massive numbers can overwhelm you. And it can take up to 4 full strength whacks to the head with an axe to kill one, or 3 shots to the head with a 9mm pistol.

Ya,, I guess our sensitivity is way to high for helo flying, but they say to use the mouse - but I didn't use the mouse in Desert Combat either - I would use kb only...might have to try that.

Tutorial vids for vehicles and helos say it is super hard, no noobs allowed....so I guess I just have to practice. heheheheh

I flew the helicopters in Desert Combat with a mouse and was damn good at it. It must not be working for me in Ravaged. I tried several times and no matter how I moved the mouse it always rolled to the same side and exploded. I even tried just lifting straight up without touching the mouse and it does the same thing.

Well, a lot of people complained about city states and in the expansion they've received a considerable overhaul. They're now much less invasive and better integrate into standard play styles, without simply being money sinks. The AI has also received a lot of attention, another common area of complaint.

Still, more could have been done. Multiplayer is still woefully lacking despite promises that proper support would be added in a patch. It really depends on how much you like the core game but I consider it a strong expansion. For me it was an instant purchase and I've been really enjoying it. Those on the fence are best waiting for the inevitable sale.

So for in the games I've played, I just ignored city states. In every game I've played so far, I haven't had a city state near me, so getting friendly and protecting one would be a major commitment. I did become friends with one through some odd quest, and they did gift me some obsolete military units a few times.

My first and current game in G&K is the same deal. I'm on a continent with 4 other civs and one city state, and the city state is on the opposite end of the continent. I have a have a scout out scouring the world. I still don't have the ability to travel in deep oceans, so I have had to stick to the coast. I did find a chain of islands with 7 city states each on it's own little 1-2 tile island, and another small continent with 3 city states and nothing else. I'm playing on a standard map, but I bumped the civs up to 10 and city states to 20. I find the default civ/city state numbers for the maps give too much room, so I always add extras to make it more interesting in the beginning fighting for land with such close borders. Although I think I should have added more civs because it's still a bit roomy.

Crashed the helo in about 4 seconds! hahahaha

I played for a bit last night. It needs a lot of work, but has potential. I couldn't figure out the damn helicopters. I guess you can't fly with the mouse, because no matter what I did it just flipped over and crashed. It took me a while to realize the AA missiles don't lock on or track their target. They're basically the same way they were in Desert Combat, they fly straight so you have to lead the target and they explode if it gets within a certain radius of a target. Vehicle handling is weird, and the lack of mouse look while driving them sucks.

I pay about $110 a month for basic cable and the "standard" internet, which is 12Mbps down 512Kbps up. The "enhanced" internet package is 16Mbps down and 2Mbps up, but it's almost twice the price. They do offer stand-alone internet for an extra fee.

I looked up my ISP's services while typing this and noticed they're advertising MB instead of Mb. I think I might call them and complain that I'm only getting 1.5MB when I'm supposed to be getting 12MB. Sneaky

I'm considering switching to AT&T U-verse. Last time I checked their prices and services, for the same price I pay for basic cable TV & internet, I could get a 300 channel digital package with DVR and 18Mbps down 2Mbps up internet. I don't need 300 channels, but there is one channel on that tier that I want, but I'm not going to pay for those other channels I'll never watch just for that one. I also don't want to get locked into a proprietary DVR. Right now I'm using my home-made HTPC.

I'm pretty curious as to Valve's requirements for Steam acceptance. I remember that Wadjet Eye had trouble getting Gemini Rue onto Steam because it didn't support full-screen originally. However, once they added that, it got onto Steam. If EA's insinuations are accurate, Steam won't allow you to sell a game that has DLC unless that DLC is also available on Steam, but there are some games on Steam that have DLC that isn't on Steam.

I'm pretty sure I have games on Steam that don't support full screen.

There is one thing I miss from Civ IV, and that is the colony thing. Although I think to form a colony in IV the city/cities had to be on a separate continent. I remember in a Civ IV game I didn't have a resource I needed, but there was some on a small unclaimed island. I sent over a settler, made a city, turned it into a colony so I could get the resource without the negatives of an extra city to maintain.

I'm in a similar situation in my current Civ V G&K game. I just researched iron working which reveals iron on the map. As my luck goes, there is no iron in my borders. There is one source two blocks outside the border of my capitol, but it's too far out to buy the tiles and I don't think the borders will expand any farther. I want that iron, but it's in a shitty location and not worth putting a city there just to get it.

I had an idea for a unit like a settler, but instead of making a city it would put up a mining colony so that you can get resources from outside your borders in unclaimed territory without having to build a new city. It wouldn't have territory borders, but it would have a range around the colony that would let you mine/farm the resources in its range. The farther from your border, the more expensive to build and/or maintain. It also can't defend itself, so you would need to guard it from barbarians and other civs.

Have you guys seen this Steam analyzer before?

http://www.lambentstew.com/webblog/miniproject/steamanalysis?steamid=Sepharo

Apparently I haven't played 62% of the games I've bought

Also keep in mind that Steam didn't track game play time since the beginning. It shows I have 0.2 hours on HL2 and 0 hours for EP1 and EP2. I know I've played through HL2 three or four times and each episode at least twice.

Does anybody know when Steam began tracking play time? I believe it was some time in 2009 based on the oldest game in my list that has what I believe is an accurate play time.

EDIT: http://www.lambentstew.com/webblog/home/steamanalysishelp

I found the answer to my own question. Steam started tracking play time in March 2009, and they're working on a way to keep the DLC from being counted as a game not played.

Civ IV was the last Civ game for me. Civ 5 was dumbed down (simplified) way too much for the console masses just like many other titles in the last few years

If that's the case, I think they missed a key part of the strategy, i.e., actually releasing it for the consoles they dumbed it down for.

This. If you're going to accuse a game of being consolized, at least check to make sure it was actually released for consoles. Civ 5 may have been simplified but it had nothing to do with consoles.

I have yet to see this dumbing down in Civ V. Some parts of the game were streamlined or simplified, but not dumbed down. I find it more challenging than Civ IV. No longer can I create a huge military stack and steam roll my way to an easy domination or territory victory. I tried creating a massive army in my first game and dominating the other civs only to find my civilization crumbling due to massive unhappieness from expanding too fast and razing and conquering a few cities. By the time I managed to get my civs happy enough to begin producing stuff and my military fighting again, I was left in the dust while the other civs had advanced way ahead of me. Civ V requires a lot more strategy and planning than Civ IV.

As far as the expansion goes... Meh, I don't think it brings all that much to the game. Spies and religion felt very minor in terms of my empire. I had some religious perks that gave me gold for every follower, faster border expansion, and faster religion expansion. Being the top religion was very easy and maintenance free and I got some big borders and extra gold out of it.
I disagree. Spies make a huge difference to diplomatic victories and mean that city states are no longer just huge money sinks. Faith allows you to customise the game to your play style, which for me means a focus on happiness and/or production. More importantly, the AI has received a complete overhaul and is much more compelling - especially now that you can take cities from the sea (very useful for dealing with city states). In addition the entire game has been rebalanced, so cities are much stronger and siege units are much more important. And the new civs have some interesting perks, like the ability to annex a city state via forced marriage or razing cities at twice the rate.

I put the expansion right up there with Beyond The Sword.

You disagree but I agree with everything you wrote

I wasn't sure if the AI and general game improvements were part of the expansion or just patches since I last played at launch. As far as spies go... I'm always the one with all the city state allies anyway, I do pay them frequently but since I usually focus on gold anyway it's no big deal... Also the missions help a lot and it seems that they cut down on the "destroy this encampment" missions. Most of mine were "connect a road to us", "have this luxury resource", and "generate the most culture/faith/happiness in a certain period" all of which were easy. Perhaps I have the difficulty too low, I think it's a few notches above default though.

edit: Oh... they just don't give you enough spies to have a huge effect in my opinion either. I think you get 2 by the modern age, and then another if you build the NSA. Probably an extra if you're a specific leader too.

So far I'm enjoying the expansion. I'm still in my first game with it, and I was the 2nd civ to founded a religion, and a neighboring civ founded one after me. I like that you get to pick perks for your religion, one for you if you're the founder and follower perks. I happened to have my capitol city near 4 sources of wine, and one of the pantheon beliefs was +1 faith for each source of wine, so I chose that. When I was able to expand it to a full religion, I chose the monastery deal that adds more faith for each source of wine worked by a city, so I'm rolling in faith. I bought a prophet (or whatever it is) to spread my religion to one of my cities and to my neighbor because his religion was starting to push into one of my cities. I like the way religion is done with this expansion. In Civ IV religion really wasn't useful.

I'm not sure of the AI enhancements yet (if there are any). I usually play with the random personalities turned on so that you don't know what a leader is going to be like, but this game I left it off since I'm playing with the new civs and leaders. I think the AI cheats, or it was huge coincidence and this particular civ leader is just weird. I only have one civ on my borders, Pacal of the Mayans. I was thinking that he would eventually attack me because of our close borders, and there is a lot of unclaimed land north of my territory that no one else can get to without going through me. My military was a bit pathetic, just two archers, two or three spearmen and a warrior. My military adviser said that our military was no match for theirs and not to mess with them, so I was planning to beef up my military. Then I started a golden age, so I took a gamble and switched two of my three cities to building world wonders. One of the wonders was Stonehenge.

The very next turn, Pacal declares war on me, and when his military stormed out of the fog, it was warriors and his unique version of archers. He focused his attack on the city where I was building Stonehenge. I'm playing as Carthage, and I had enough gold to buy two spearmen or my unique unit the African War Elephant. I chose to go with the war elephant because of its special fear penalty it puts on nearby enemy units. I weakened his units with attacks from the city and the archers in the city. He hit a couple of my units hard which I pulled back to heal, then my war elephant got there and I took out three of his units before I had to retreat it to heal. He chased it down with three of his archer units and killed it though. Anyway, he made three attacks at the city then retreated and offered a peace treaty and some gold, which I gladly took.

After this he is all nice to me and shit. He attacked me with weak units when he had more powerful units. He was either testing my defenses, trying to get rid of obsolete units, or this is part of his personality or just AI weirdness.

A bit later, I'm two turns from completing Stonehenge when Pacal beats me to it. Either the AI cheats and he knew I was building Stonehenge too since he only attacked the city where I was building it, maybe trying to force me to change production. It could be a coincidence because it was the closest city to his border, but only by one tile. Either way, I now have a sizable military presence on our border now, and he's still friendly to me.

*2 copies - Post Apocalyptic Mayhem
*1 copy - Nuclear Dawn (showed up today for no reason)
*1 copy - The Ship
*1 copy - Torchlight 1
*1 copy - Terraria (gave Blue almost a year to claim it as a gift)

Also, it anyone playing the free Source based Vindictus (action MMO).
http://store.steampowered.com/app/212160

In preparation for the summer sale, I'm putting Steam in offline mode and avoiding Blues News until it's over.

I have three copies of The Ship, one Nuclear Dawn, Half Life 2 and Grid (which I got for doing the winter achievements and haven't decided if I'm going to play it yet). I also have Steam keys for Killing Floor and Plain Sight from an indie bundle.

One thing we can do for game giveaways is to create group giveaways on Steam Gifts. Everyone would need to be in the Blues News Steam group and sign up on Steam Gifts. That way winners will be picked at random instead of luck of first come first served.

This was supposed to be STALKER until the realities of game development hit GSC like a brick to the nuts.

Anyways I went back to Flash 10.3 and it solved my Firefox problem.

Yes, but Stalker was always going to be SP.

As for Firefox/flash, since updating flash the other day I get an error box pop up when I visit pages with flash content. I forget what it says and now that just tried to make it do it, it's not popping up. Once it did freeze Firefox, but I killed the plugin-container.exe process and Firefox was fine.

15. Random thoughts (DayZ, Fallout MMO) Jun 23, 2012, 19:07 jimnms

I played a bit of DayZ when it first came out. Not being able to play every day and usually only at night kind of killed it for me. I always logged in to find myself dying of hunger and thirst. The new version changed that, so I'm going to check it out again.

I've been watching some let's plays on YouTube and streams on Twitch.tv to get some "intel" on where good stuff is, and a though occurred to me. This kind of game play would be awesome in a Fallout MMO. You could have towns, cities, etc. where fighting isn't allowed, where you trade and get quests, but outside those walls it would be a huge open world like DayZ with everyone for themselves. If you were out in the wasteland scavenging, questing, etc. and saw another person, you wouldn't know if they were friendly or would shoot you on sight and loot your stuff. If they were friendly, you could trade, team up, but never really know if they're going to shoot you in the back when you're not expecting it.
