If you want Amnesia or the Penumbra games, you can also get them direct from the developers store for 75% off. I'm not 100% sure, but I believe you get a Steam key as well as a DRM free download, at least I did when I pre-ordered Amnesia from them.

7. What is the real version number of Windows 8? Oct 27, 2012, 02:35 jimnms

The author could have saved a lot of speculation and writing by just opening a Windows Explorer window, hit ALT, click Help and About Windows to see that Windows 8 is in fact Windows version 6.2.

The Windows NT code started at version 3.1. They dropped the version numbers with Windows 2000, but it was NT version 5.0. Windows XP was NT 5.1, Windows Vista was NT 6.0, Windows 7 is 6.1 and Windows 8 is 6.2. If you want to get technical about it and consider Windows NT 3.1 as NT 1.0, then Windows 8 is really Windows NT version 4.2.

Windows ME was garbage. Every time this topic comes up it absolutely floors me that, without exception, there is someone who tries to sugar coat just how awful that OS was.

Every time someone calls WinME garbage, they never supply any specifics as to why it was garbage. I'm not sugar coating shit, I just said I didn't remember any major problems with it. I'm not talking from personal experience with just my own system either. Right out of high school I landed a job as the one and only employee at a small local ISP (~800 customers when I started, over 2500 when I left), which a friend of mine recommended me to take over when he left for college. The owner also sold computers which I helped do support on those. I had a couple of friends start up a computer store in town which I helped out at in my spare time. I did that for 3 years before going off to college myself.

The systems the ISP owner sold were cheap shitty ass systems he bought pre-built from another company and just switched the badges on them. The driver I mentioned earlier that gave me problems was the driver for the modem that came in these systems. He also sold the modems to ISP customers that didn't have them. The modems were those crappy software driven modems. Whenever he sold one of these modems, the customer either brought their system in, or they took it home and tried to install it themselves. Most of those that tried to do it themselves I ended up having to make a house call after hours to fix it when they couldn't get online with it. The driver was a pain in the ass to install in Win95 and 98. That whole plug-n-play BS didn't work as it wouldn't detect an available COM port and IRQ, and I had to do it manually. I told the owner the modems he was selling were shit, but he didn't care. He was getting them dirt cheap and marking them way up. When the systems started arriving with WinME on them or when installing it in systems that already had ME, the driver worked perfectly every time. At either place we didn't have people asking to switch back to 98 when ME came out, and at the computer store, we sold ME upgrades and installed them for people.

What is with Microsoft and every other iteration of their OS being complete garbage? 3.0, 95, ME, Vista, Windows 8

I don't remember 95 or ME being garbage. I beta tested 95 and it did have early problems, but by the time it shipped it was pretty damn solid. I think its biggest problem were there were so many minor versions of it and they never patched them into to make one unified build. The Win95 OSR2 release IMO was the best of the Win9x releases.

Personally I didn't like Win98. That was when they integrated IE into the OS, and it made the whole UI look like shit. WinME cleaned up the UI a bit by borrowing some things from Win2000. I know people love to hate on WinME, but once again I can't remember having any problems with it. WinME actually was more stable for me than Win98. There was one particular driver that always was a pain to install/update in Win98, but I never had an issue with it in WinME.

I heard horror stories about WinXP, but I didn't make the jump to XP until I built a new machine for it. I'm sure all of the problems had been ironed out by then, and most likely the horror stories were due to upgrading from previous versions rather than doing a full install.

I never used Vista, so I didn't experience that one first hand except working on a few people's machines that had it. I did buy it, but never got around to installing it. I had been using XP for so long I just really didn't feel like starting over. The little bit of it I did use though it was annoying as hell with the amount of times it popped up asking permission to do shit.

News Comments > XCOM: Enemy Unknown DLC Released; Two More Packs Planned
25. Re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown DLC Released; Two More Packs Planned Oct 24, 2012, 08:34 jimnms

Am I the only one that finds DLC like this puts me off wanting to buy the game? Civ V was the same way, I didn't get it at release because it felt like they were holding back stuff that should have been in the game to start with just to milk more money out of people. I just waited until all the little DLC packs were out and bought the complete deal for ~$20 or so. Had they put all of that content in the game to begin with I would have bought it on day one for $50, so they actually lost money from me. I guess there must me plenty of people who fall for this nickel and dime shit that makes up for people like me that don't want any part of it and pick it up in the bargain bin when it's finished.

I was actually tempted to buy XCOM today since GMG still has the 10% off plus a $10 credit. I got sucked into watching some guy's let's play videos of XCOM, and it had me wanting to play it. The guy was naming his soldiers after people who left constructive comments, which I thought was kind of neat. After a couple of his soldiers died and he was customizing the next ones, he said that he didn't realize you couldn't customize your soldiers if you didn't pre-order. That pretty much killed my desire to buy the game. Now I see that you can do this, if you pay an extra $5.

This is worse that horse armor, this is horse shit. What's next, $5 DLC for a quick save feature, $10 to rebind keys? If this shit keeps up, my grand kinds are going to think DLC Quest was a serious game.

Totally agree. I've played video games and then had trouble sleeping as I kept thinking about what I had just done, or planned to do next (especially for RPGs or strategy games)... but then I've also had conversations with people that I enjoyed a great deal that kept me up as I thought about what we had discussed and so forth.

In either case the fault wasn't the gaming or the conversation; it was me not settling down and basically not finding a way to turn my brain off long enough to settle into sleep.

I've had sleep problems my whole life. Even when I was in elementary school, before we had game consoles or home computers I just couldn't turn my brain off at "bed time." I'd lay awake for hours tossing and turning. Eventually I would fall asleep, but it would be almost impossible to wake me in the morning.

After graduating high school, working and in college I still used to make myself go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. Most nights I wouldn't be able to go to sleep, and when I did fall asleep I felt like crap in the mornings.

I finally started noticing that on nights when I'd stay up cramming for a test or to finish a paper, then go to bed exhausted at 3-4am, I actually felt better and more rested even when I had to wake up at 7am.

Now I play games, watch a TV or movie right up until I go to bed. I don't even go to bed until I feel tired and know I'll fall asleep when I get in the bed. Some days I may only get 4 hours of sleep, but it's better quality sleep and I actually wake up easier and feel better when I do.

It is good to see Kaspersky still on top. It goes on sale quiet often in the local BestBuy for $20 for the 3 computer license, so it is cheap to keep the PCs protected.

I see regular sales of Kaspersky that's free after MIR. I'll stick with MSE though. I've managed to stay virus free for as long as I've been using computers, mainly using common sense. My sister on the other hand managed to get infected with viruses no matter what I put on her computer. After I cleaned the last infection from her system I put MSE on it and she hasn't had a virus since.

So many stretch goals, man I wish this was a game I wanted to play more, I kept looking for something I wanted to spend more money on but couldn't move myself past the $20 mark.

I hope these guys come back for a scifi ip of some type. I'm very interested to see what they make, perhaps it will be something even I can enjoy!

I initially went in for $20, but upped it to the $65 because I want the box and printed manual. I really wanted to get the cloth map, but couldn't justify to myself to spend another $75 for the $140 collectors edition tier. I did chip in another $20 with 2 minutes to go to get in on the expansion. I wish they'd have put the cloth map as an addon.

Anyhow, I upped my pledge last night from the $20 early bird to a $65 boxed copy in hopes that we reach that $3.5 mil figure. $3 mil is locked in, for sure, though, so even if they don't beat Double Fine, it's still gonna be awesome. I really would like them to make cloth maps available as add-ons, though... Wasteland 2 included a cloth map with the $50 box, doesn't seem fair for Obsidian to only include it with the $140 collector's edition.

If I up my pledge, I'll probably do the $35 one for the sound track and digital book. If they offered the cloth map with the $65 boxed version I'd have jumped on that already.

I finally decided to go ahead and get in this one. I had the page open reading the different pledge rewards, refreshed the page and a $20 spot opened up so I jumped on it. I might up my pledge before it's over though.

It's looking like this will definitely beat Wasteland 2. It may even beat DFA.
You can still donate to Wasteland 2 on their store page if you missed out. Brian Fargo tweeted the other day that they had another $1000 backer through the store, so there's no telling what their total is counting post kickstarter funds. Also, for kickstarter backers, you can bump up your pledges at their Backer Store.

57. Re: Borderlands 2 Captain Scarlett DLC Next Week Oct 11, 2012, 19:40 jimnms

I've kind of petered out on BL2. I'm kind of wishing I'd waited and bought it when it was finished (all DLC released). I was having a blast with it, but something about it got me in the mood for some Fallout New Vegas. I had been trying out mods off and on for the past couple of months and pretty much had everything picked out, installed and ready to go, I just needed a push to get started.

Right now I'm just using mostly texture and appearance improving mods, bug fixes and some minor game tweaks to make the experience a little harder and immersive without changing much of the core game. After this play I want to start a new game with the jsawyer mod and nothing else except texture/appearance mods.

Maybe when I'm done with that, they'll be finished with all of the BL2 DLC and I'll come back to it.

I played it for about an hour this morning and I couldn't figure out how to create different profiles or teams for local play either. In Worms Reloaded you could create separate profiles each with several custom teams. My niece likes to play Worms, and with Reloaded she had her own profile so her teams were separate from mine.

19. Re: XCOM: Enemy Unknown Reviews Oct 8, 2012, 13:42 jimnms

I never played the original XCOM. I don't know why, maybe because when it came out in 1994 I was in high school at the time and didn't have a machine that could run it. I do likes me some turn based strategy/RPG though.

Hearing all the hype about how great the original was and how awesome this one is going to be, I was tempted to get it until I played the demo. Didn't you control larger squads in the original XCOM? In the demo you only have 4 people, and every game play video I've seen it's 4 people or 4 people + 1 robot. Is that it or do you get larger squads later in the game? I know there is more to the game than the combat, but there wasn't any of that in the demo and they haven't shown any of that in the videos (at least the ones I've seen, and I haven't read these reviews yet).

I've been trying to get a new Fallout New Vegas game going since I bought the DLC last year, but I keep getting distracted by new games. Borderlands just came out and I'm still deep into it. Dishonored is coming out, and it looks damn good too. Right now I'm thinking fuck it, I'll finish what's on my plate and get one or both of these later when their price comes down.

I was checking my account every day for the key. They posted it to my account page days before release so I was able to activate and pre-load it.

Couldn't tell you if it works, but there it is...

Unfortunately that only stops it from automatically checking for updates and downloading them. If you go to play a game, it will check for and download any updates even with that setting.

I really wish they would fix this. How fucking hard would it be to give you a prompt telling you that an update is available and ask if you want to download it?
