Origin serves little purpose other than an obstacle to play their games. It's not a big obstacle but if their website simply offered downloads of the games directly I can't say I'd miss origin.

You could say exactly the same thing about Valve. Can you name a place where I can buy a Valve game that doesn't require Steam?

I guess we'll see what it does when I (eventually) kick it off. The number I was seeing was on the screen where you double click the name of the game in your list and you get the popup about "this game requires X amount of space, space available: Y". Is that where you saw 4 gig?

Bizarre...

Yeah that's where it was. I knew from the KS update that it wasn't going to be available on Steam, but when I put the key in it looked like it was going to let me install it. When I clicked finish, it only downloaded a few KB, and when I checked the steamapps dir to see what it downloaded, it was just some jpg file.

Then later just past noon it began downloading the whole game, I guess it saw it as an update. The Steam download was only 760MB, but after install it's 4.35GB.

Grabbed my code tonight from the KS - 8.7 gig on steam! Damn!

Something's wrong with that! I plugged in my Steam key this morning before it was available on Steam and it showed 4.3GB, but it wouldn't download. I grabbed DRM free download, which is only 750MB. Right after it was released at noon CDT, Steam began downloading it, and it only downloaded around 760MB. I just checked the directory in Steam and it is 4.35GB.

EDIT: Just out of curiosity extracted the DRM free installer and it is also 4.35GB. They could have kept some of the game files compressed to save disk space.

Alright -- someone give me the short version explanation of what these "Steam Trading Cards" are. I have not been paying attention.
It's a cheap cash grab for Valve. You can only earn half of the cards by playing the game. The rest you have to get by trading or buying them from the market (which Valve gets a cut).

I don't understand how it's supposed to work. If you can only unlock half the cards for a game, then how do you get the other half by actually trading them? If another person trades the half they have, then they can't unlock the badge. They did add booster packs, but it's a small chance to drop that goes up the higher your "level."

Once you collect all the cards and craft the badge, are the cards consumed or can you still trade them? I haven't collected a full set of cards to craft a badge, so I don't know. It would make since if you keep the cards after crafting the badge, otherwise it seems that only half of a game's owners can get the full set.

Oh and I still have two beta invites if anyone wants them.

In a sandbox environment "winning" more or less means "getting to do what you want".

If it takes X number of hours of boredom mining asteroids and hauling inexpensive freight from point A to point B in order to make enough money to afford a ship that lets you play how you want, and then someone else who wants to play the way you want to play pulls out a credit card and skips those X hours, I'd say that's "pay to win". Or if it wasn't a transaction, and it was say... a code or a hack, it'd be cheating. So how about instead of pay to win it's pay to cheat?

I'd call that PN2P (Pay Not to Play). They've mentioned several times on forum discussions that they don't want users to have to grind. You will still have to work your way up to afford better ships, but that journey should be a fun experience. If someone wants to drop a load of real money in the game to get a better starting ship, that's not going to have any effect on you, and that money goes to further expand the game for everyone. Citizenship and reputation can't be bought, so they still have to play the game to earn that.

Ok, I've done that part too. I think that was one of the last things I did before I took a break.

Ugh, regular skyrim is back in the top 10, or is that the Legendary version?

That's a good question since you can still buy the regular Skyrim for $30 vs $60 for the "Legendary Edition." I'm hoping the DLC will be on sale this summer, although I still need to finish the base game. I took a break from the game, but haven't gotten back to it yet.

While we're on the subject, might as well ask since I just thought of it. I fired up Skyrim a few weeks ago thinking of get back to it. I updated the mods I was using and added a few new ones, dicked around a bit, but that was it. I was looking in the journal to refresh my memory of where I was. I remember I had finished off some side quests, and decided it was at a good place to take a break. I haven't done much of the main quest, which I had planed to do when I returned from my break. I thought the main quests showed up in bold or somehow looked different than other quests in the journal, but they all look the same to me. Am I missing something or was I imagining things?

As far as the main quest, I think I only did about 3 parts of it past the first dragon killing. I went up the mountain to the old farts, did their fetch quest, and I think that was it. After that I just went off exploring and doing side quests.

I don't care about any of this F2P MMO crap. The singleplayer portion needs to be good all by itself because that's all I'll ever play. From how little mention it gets in interviews and previews I highly doubt it will be anything but a glorified tutorial.

You should take a little time and go browse the forum. Go to the general forum and there are a couple sticky topics that should answer most of your questions. I was on the fence about this, but now I'm considering backing this after reading up on it.

Playing online in the persistent universe (PU) is optional. Squadron 42 is a single player military type campaign. It's optional, but completing it earns you citizenship in the universe. There will be other ways to earn citizenship, but even citizenship is optional:

Citizenship can be earned in the game. Most people will do this by entering the universe via the Squadron 42 stand-alone game. Service in the military will earn you Galactic credits, perhaps a ship, and citizenship at a level that varies depending on choices you make during the Squadron 42 game.

Citizenship has Galaxy-wide implications. If you send out a distress call when attacked, NPC elements will respond faster if you have a high citizenship level. Players with low or negative citizenship levels may have trouble entering and being serviced in heavily-policed areas. Players with high citizenship levels may get the cold shoulder or immediately attacked in outlaw/pirate areas.

Your citizenship level will change depending on the choices you make in game. Take jobs at the request of the government and your citizenship level will rise. Consistently and successfully respond to distress calls and your citizenship level will rise. Traffic in narcotics, slavery or perform piracy and your citizenship level will drop.

The game is mostly PvE, but there will be PvP. The game will have a slider in the options to tell the PU server how much, if any, you want. I did read that operating in some of the outer areas of civilized/policed space you will still encounter PvP, but you'll also have to deal with NPC pirates and mercs. Since the game isn't based around PvP, I don't see how it can be called P2W. It's more like P2GaBS (Pay to Get a Better Start).

I've had the Star Citizen page open in a browser tab for weeks (maybe months) trying to decide if I want to get in on this. Everything I've read about the online persistent part sounds awesome, but I had several questions about the game that I needed answering before I make up my mind. I just spent a couple of hours reading the forums and found answers to most of them. One of them involved how it handled PvP. It looks like there will be a slider in the options to tell the server how much PvP you want to encounter, but they also say that in certain areas (outside of civilized/policed space) it may not be possible to avoid PvP.

I haven't found answers to all of my questions yet, like how does what you do in the online persistent universe effect your offline experience and vise versa? If you're participating in the online persistent world and you decide to sell/trade the ship you get from your pledge, what happens if you decide to play offline or on a private server? Is that pledge ship available to you when you start a new game offline or join a private server for the first time?

Also how are the recurring in game fees (insurance, hangar fee, etc.) handled when you don't play for a while? If you don't play for several weeks, will you log in to find all or a large chunk of your money gone because of these fees?

Have you tried the 2nd playthrough? It's much more difficult, and once you beat the main campaign everything scales. Also, 3rd playthrough is extremely difficult. I recommended 3rd playthrough with a friend, as you will die..alot.

I really don't feel like playing it again, just like the first BL. Why do I need to play it 2-3 times before it gets challenging? If I were to play it again, I'd want to do it as a different character.

BL2 was better than the first BL with quest leveling. It seemed that in BL2, quests were set to your level when you get them, unlike BL1 where they seemed to be fixed no matter what. There were a few times in BL2 where I was getting my ass kicked constantly on a quest, so I had to go do some side quests to level up and come back. They did a good job on the main game, so why didn't they do this for the DLC quests?

This does look cool. I hope it will scale to your current level when starting it. I started one of the DLC after finishing the main game, I think I'm at level 35 or something, but when I started the DLC everything was fixed at level 30. I could just casually walk around and not even have to shoot back because the enemies couldn't even take down my shield. I got bored and quit, and that was the last time I played Borderlands 2 (but I still fire it up to enter shift codes even though I probably have 200 keys by now).

What's MMUE, jim?

Mission Mojave - Ultimate Edition It's a bug fix mod. There's another bug fix mod out there, but it's essentially a compilation of other individual bug fix patches merged into one. MMUE goes farther and fixes the bugs themselves rather than just compiling a bunch of smaller fixes into one.

EDIT - On that note, are there any must-have mods for New Vegas? The Brazil one looks amazing but I have tried it yet.

I don't like using overhaul type mods until I've played the game at least once. I generally play the first time completely vanilla, then a 2nd time modded a bit before I go all out with the crazy overhauls. I've played it once vanilla and once with DLC and a few light mods. IMO, the DLC make the game too easy with the level cap increase and perks you get from completing the DLC quests.

I suggest using MMUE to squish bugs, and then add some immersion mods and texture replacements. I would also install some UI mods like oHUD with DARNUI. After playing with those it makes me want to puke seeing screen shots and videos of the stock UI.

For me it was little mods that made the game more enjoyable, especially if you're playing it in hardcore mode. There was one that would let you use a pilot light and flamer fuel to use ovens as a camp fire for cooking/crafting. I think it was called simply called Oven Cooking.

Another one I used was called Manual Reload. It requires NVSE, and does what the name implies. No longer will you automatically reload when the last shot is fired, you either manually hit the reload key or switch weapons. Sometimes it's faster to switch to a second weapon than reload which is one reason I like it. The other is that it makes the game remember how much ammo is in each weapon, so if you're down to just a few shots left (or empty) and switch to another weapon, when you re-equip the first weapon it isn't magically reloaded anymore.

I plan to play again with JSawyer's mod. I'm going to keep it simple though, just use the MMUE bug fix along with UI and texture mods. I want to keep to the original game as much as possible, but make it more challenging.

Yes it includes the sound track. I have everything in this bundle already except Organ Trail, but I went in for $5 to get the Android versions.

I was just thinking the other day that I should play some Frozen Synapse again. It's a lot of fun, except there are some d-bags that will quit a game when they realize they can't win. The devs kept saying they were going make it so that if a player doesn't take a turn they'll automatically forfeit the game, but last time I played (about a year ago) it wasn't working. I had three games in a row end like that, where I had the opponent in a no-win situation, so they just quit.

Steam is a pretty close comparison to what Microsoft is trying to do with DRM on Xflop. It's all about DRM tying the game to specific hardware and having online activation required. They just went a little further without any lube.

I don't support Steam or the Xflop, both are too far offside of consumer rights that I'm not interested in either.

Microsoft is going to be nothing like Steam. I buy games from Steam knowing that I can't sell or trade them. The rate game prices fall on Steam defeats used sales anyway. If you buy a game at release for full price, then several months later it can be bought 50-75% off, who'd want to buy a used copy? I can't remember the last time I paid full retail price for a game anyway, even new games.

I can also put Steam on any computer and play my games. The only restriction is that only one can be online at a time, but I can put the others in offline mode and they don't need to phone home to let me play.

If you don't like Steam there are alternatives to Steam that sell games DRM free (Amazon, GamersGate, GOG, Desura, etc.) Even Steam sells DRM free games, they just don't advertise it. It's up to the developer/publisher if they want to implement Steam's DRM. There are several games in my Steam library that I can run without the Steam client by running the game's .exe directly. You can backup the game directory, copy it to another computer, etc. and run it stand alone without Steam.

Ok... that's just fricken lame.

I'll say one good thing about the Xbox One, it's been giving me some damn fine entertainment these past few days.

I wonder if the XBOne games running natively on Windows 7 or through some kind of emulation. If they can run natively, that's good news for PC ports, but it also makes me wonder if crackers can just get a XBOne disk and crack it straight to PC.
