Blizzard did this with the diablo 3 beta, restricting you to just a fraction of Act I.

That's because they didn't want anyone to really know how fucking awful the game was.

Q: What’s in the beta?

A: Here’s the answer straight from Lead Producer Kip Katsarelis: The Closed Beta is an important step for us as we approach our launch date for SimCity. We’ve crafted a one hour replayable experience that will let you enjoy the magic of the game and allow us to test critical features. Everyone will go through our “Getting Started Scenario”, which takes you through the basics of how to play the game and gives you a sneak peak at some late game content. After that, you’re free to start your own city and play for one hour. We’ve given you all the tools to build up a medium density city, given access to the Casino Big Business, all of the basic services, loads of public transportation options, and several options on how you can power your city. You can start up as many cities as you like during the 3 Day event. We encourage you to try to build different types of cities, explore the leaderboards and try to beat the Global Challenge! By putting these features through a rigorous test, you’re doing us a huge service. Your feedback will go directly to the Development Team and make an impact on future updates. By playing the game you’ll be testing our online servers, helping ensure a smooth launch.

BTW if you enjoyed FFXII you need to play Xenoblade Chronicles over on Wii (it runs well enough under Dolphin, too). It's pretty much verbatim the style/substance of FFXII.

(I KNOW! LET'S MAKE OUR SP RPG LIKE AN MMO, SO THAT PLAYERS HAVE TO GRIND MOBS TO HOPE FOR THAT 0.000004% DROP RATE FOR AN ITEM THEY'LL NEED TO MAKE SOMETHING COOL! WOOOO!)

That was absolutely, 100% not required in any way shape or form for the main game. FF13 is a travesty because it doesn't HAVE any extraneous stuff to do until 4/5 of the way through the plotline, and even then the extra stuff is a pittance.

FFXII is my personal favorite because the plot is simple and only there to move the player forward, the zones are giant and populated by a wide variety of beasties, the no-loading-screen MMO-style combat is just plain more fun than any other FF, and the plethora of characters can be swapped out willy nilly. The fast pace of the combat made the tougher, optional boss/hunting battles intense.

The difference is there was still hope before D3 released that it would be salvageable. SimCity at this point is a complete write off.

It looks really bad graphically and there's an overall unpolished feel. There's no goal. You're in the middle of nowhere and there's no reason to do anything.

Yup. The game was made over the span of eons by one guy so it's no surprise.

It takes forever to accomplish anything and even when you do it wasn't accomplishing much. The UI is one of the worst I've ever seen and in a game like this that's all it takes to sink the entire product.

The key to a great sauce is to let somebody else make it.

Personal favorite is Mid's (headquartered near me, actually), but I routinely use Newman's Own Sockarooni because it is so much cheaper.

So am I the only person who after playing the ship missions who really, really wanted a Napoleonic Wars sailing game?

Everybody that played AC3 wants a game based on the naval missions.

People who don't play violent video games don't see a problem with banning violent video games, and people who don't own firearms don't see a problem with banning firearms... Amazing how that works, isn't it?

You just equated tools for killing people with fictional, virtual entertainment. Amazing how that works.

Nobody legitimately thinks the Constitution is beyond question. If they did there wouldn't have been nearly thirty Amendments. People just throw it out there because it sounds good, much like they do "the founding fathers." It's a document written by men, and men are inherently flawed.

Chivalry is hilariously violent. I'm pretty tempted to grab up a bardiche and go hacking limbs off people to see how reality compares.
