I still run an Core 2 Duo E8600... and I bought a GTX680 about 6 months ago.

While my CPU is a bottleneck for that video card... it's still plenty fast.

But once you get a much more modern quad or better... you'll see there is a bigger difference then what you might think.

I bought a Bulldozer CPU (the 6300 I think - I'm not at home so I can't check) for my new build and it is extremely fast; certainly a massive upgrade over the first-gen Phenom I was running. I've seen the benchmarks and it's clear that without overclocking the Bulldozer chip can't touch an i5, but seeing as how I got it, the mobo, and 8 gigs of memory for around the same money as just the i5 would have cost me, I am thrilled with what I got for the money. I have always used AMD cpu's and have never really been disappointed by them - while slower than Intel, they have always been so much cheaper that I could afford far better video cards and motherboards. The choice was made especially easy for me as cpu power became less and less important (relative to the GPU) as time went on. I will miss AMD CPU's when they inevitably disappear, and not just because of the lack of competition for Intel.

I get a lot of that, but there was a shift not too long ago where cpu speed is once again a top need, it's not as GPU heavy as it used to me, imo. I've had both, I always go price/performance, however if they are close I do go Intel/Nvidia because they are the better standard. I haven't owned AMD stuff for quite a while now, even though their VC's are right there with NVidia, but since that is so close I go with the better supported brand.

But here is the story teller, single thread performance:
AMD fx 8350 scores 1533 (Their best)
Intel i5-3570 scores 2014

This also gives an interesting picture:
Intel vs AMD @ 3ghz

Intel isn't on sure footing right now either, the desktop / laptop market is getting trounced by tablets - and very few of those use intel chips right now.

Trounced? 4 to 1 PC to Tablet. Yes one is down YoY and another up, but that doesn't mean Tablets are outselling PC's. Intel is performing very well.

This is like the guy we should hate. All he is about is how games benefit wall street and nothing else. He also uses terribly unprofessional words at professional places. Crap, buttload and other poor taste words.

If COD charges for MP at the start, it wouldn't be what it is today, he just wont see that.

If NPD has no estimate even for online, I'm amazed PC sales has only dropped so little YoY. You would think there would have been a sharper drop off if it's just retail.

The thing no one seems to take into account is that the proc swapper/enthusiast crowd comprise a disproportionately large number of people who either make business purchasing recommendations or directly control the purse strings. So yes, it's a small overall demographic but one that has an exceptionally large influence on corporate purchasing.

Not saying it doesn't happen, but I have never seen this in practice at a corporate level.

the last time I upgraded the CPU without replacing the MB was when I went from a Pentium II 233MHz to a P3 450MHz

Wasn't the P3 300 mhz celeron, the chipset that really kicked off overcloking? That is where you could buy it for like $300 and overclock it to run like a $1000 chip. Back when 3dfx and 3d kicked off? To me that was when overclocking really paid off, $ wise and performance, you needed every little bit.

Or perhaps the licensing agreement with Perfect World Entertainment ran out, and PWE asked more than was feasible to keep the game running to continue licensing. Which would jive with the sudden closure as there was a roadmap in place to continue growing the game.

Sure, something in the details with everything considered made them make the decision to close. Unethical not being one.

Really, though, it boils down to Win8 being completely unnecessary. I don't need or want to change my OS every two years.

I think that is a much better argument. It's not that Win 8 is bad, it wasn't really needed for most people. I'd been just as happy if Win 7 was still the latest release.

But MS has to figure out how to get mobile/tablet/pc synergies working, you can see what they are thinking, they have to try, otherwise they are giving up way too much to competitors. So I get why they are doing what they are. I'm just glad there is a way to hide Metro, that is all I had an issue with.

I don't mind Windows 8 from using it for the last month, since I had to learn support for it at work. But you know what? It's usable because I can just skip all the shit that makes it Windows 8 and use it exactly like Windows 7, without ever touching the new "desktop"... I never take it out of desktop mode in normal use. So why use 8 instead of 7? I can't honestly think of a good reason.

That is fair, but then it also doesn't mean Win 8 sucks, as some go straight to. To me it means there are two very close O/S's out there, one is slightly updated, but then again several apps we use get updates and that usually is a good thing. As you say, if you hate metro or don't need it (ME!), you can hide it and never see it and then it's a slightly updated Win7. Would I pay $40 or $100 for it? No. I rec'd a laptop with it on already, don't see no reason to move it to 7. System runs exteremely similar to Win 7, in the Control Panel there is a program that still uses the name Win7, doh!

Let’s put it this way Intel, if you take away the ability for user to socket their boards then you might as well stick a fork in your company and call it done.

Lol, no. If there is no one to challenge them in speed, they are in great shape.

Enthusiasts are a small market, my employer wouldn't care if it was socketed or not and they are the much bigger market, or mom buying a pc/laptop, she doesn't know to care. That said, I'm still buying the best bang for buck HW no matter if it is socketed or not, but prefer socketed.

As we mentioned in the other thread, unfortunately it seems many times when you go to upgrade you have to buy a newer mb/proc and ram anyway, so in most cases it doesn't matter even for many enthusiasts.

But hey if we want to raise the heat level, we can get excited about it!

"the game has been bringing in 3 billion won ($2.76 million) every quarter. “It is hard to comprehend what NCsoft means when they said they closed it for strategic reasons,” one analyst said."

Mr. Outsider, what this means is that $2.76 million wasn't enough for them. There was a dev team and running costs to be subtracted as well. Yes vs your wage Mr. Outsider that may have been a fine salary, but for a big company, in which you don't have their entire vision, it must have not been worth it to them. "Unethical game closure?" Unethical, pulleeeze. Disappointment? perhaps. Unethical? No. We have to know games can eventually be sun-setted. Hidden fee's, inaccurate meters to your cell phone? Unethical.

That said, it would be nice if something can bring the game back for those who still want to play.

Horror,

I'm actually active in the Nvidia forums on this topic as well, lol. Several others with the issue but less solutions than here. I am very anal about my installs, im more likely to reformat than use a ghost image, if im going to start over id rather go all the way, I appreciate all of the advice though. Trying the step by step when I get home from work. I'm used to tweaking and hunting for solutions... but this particularly annoys me because I was under the impression it was a whql release...

Hate putting all of these writes and rewrites on my ssd. Anyway, back to work for a few I'm a horrible phone typist anyhow.

We've all been there and it does suck, so we feel for you.

If you don't mind:

Why would you worry about a ghost image vs clean? It's an exact copy of a working system, all one's and zero's and you have an option to copy sectors if you want an exact image how it's laid out. This is a very standard, mature method.

You can have different saves, one could be a clean load with just the updates complete and basic core software you always want installed period. I do that anytime I get a new pc up. In that case it's a 45 min recovery and you are in a great clean state, save hours.

Or save your system state weekly and keep 2 copies just in case. With computers for me it's one moment everything is good and the next moment something went to hell badly, typically a hard drive crash. Now in 45 minutes you can be restored almost back to exactly where you were at, saving tons of hours and things you would forget about. This is better then cooking with gas.

I've done it, the company I worked for that is how they deploy units, I didn't know there was a downside to be honest.

You probably know all of this, but I like to put it out there regularly because that to me is how to backup for any user.

Good to hear the NVidia forums are back up, they were down for a looooong time.

Well, thanks for the heads up eRe4s3r. You were right, something must be wrong with my installer. Most items failed or partially installed, including PhysX now.

Sonofab*tch. There goes my next day off.

Just do a system restore to yesterday.

Creston

Exactly, at the very worst.

Except it didnt work, as you would know if you'd read the next few posts. A solution was posted though... can't wait to get home and give it a try.

But then it's how you read what I wrote. I mean in the very worst do a system restore. If that doesn't work, I'd be digging deeper into the system and almost never failing back to a Clean Install. Also do yourself a lifetime favor, get a usb drive and ghose your boot drive, that certainly would cover any issue like this.

There was one suggestion that went step by step above, was that tried? Couldn't tell if going back to an older version worked? Does win 8 have a safe mode and if so were those avenues looked at? I'd be googling for answers. Unfortunately I doubt the NVida forums are up or ever coming back, you would get an answer there.
